It seems you know more about real submarines that most of us. You're in good company, though - there are a few of you around.

Looking forward to hearing more from you. :sunny:

Thanks for a bit of a history lesson Pielstick . It's always great to hear from someone who has " been there " .

Enjoy a long run here . :salute:

Thanks for the welcome gents.

I also just realised... the last time I sailed on the ship in the pic above was in 2012... one one particular Thursday War in the exercise areas off Plymouth we were "sunk" four times by the same Bundesmarine Type 212 U-Boat. I heard they were a pretty sharp lot and the surface ships had a hell of a time finding them.

That weekend the liberty boat dropped us off at Flagstaff Steps in HMNB Devonport and the U-Boat in question was berthed near by. I was really struck by how small it was... teeny weeny little thing.

Oh yeah, and the coolest character in Das Boot.... the engineer of course!

Jimbuna,

How's your lad getting on? Is he still at sea? Did he get his Chief Mate's ticket?

I was back in South Shields at the end of 2013 for my Chief Engineer's ticket. The marine school had gone downhill quite a bit since I was last there doing my Second Engineer's ticket in 2010. Last month I did a course in Glasgow with a guy who works for BP, just done his Second's at Shields and says the last of the good engineering lecturers (including the guy who was holding it all together) have all recently quit. Sad to see the college in decline... I've got many happy memories of my time there as a cadet.,

He passed his Chief Mates ticket last November or December (not sure which month precisely) and was lucky to move into a vacant slot first trip back. He needs a years sea time before he can go for his Masters (I think that is the time requirement).

He joined his ship (Eurodam) at Fort Lauderdale last Sunday and she is now in dry dock at Lucaya, The Bahamas.

Sad to learn things are so bad at the college up the road and will inform James when he next rings home.

Great stuff. It's a really big deal when you get your Chief Mate/2nd Engineer ticket.

I did my Chief Engineer's ticket with a guy from Holland America Line, he had spent something like the last ten years on the Veendam. My first ship with my new employer the 4th Engineer was also a new joiner just come from HAL. I don't know how it is on the deck side there but it sounded like things weren't happy for engineers there.

As for the colleges, Shields has really gone downhill. I've also heard Warsash isn't too good these days either. Haven't heard much about Glasgow. I have heard that Fleetwood is on the rise though and seems to have become the best of the bunch.

Probably on a 40 year old fleet tanker covered in oil, engaging on an expletive laden tirade about the shortcomings of the Naval Stores system :/\\!!
