I'll be glad to play with it Bosje. I like the obstructed view too, although I don't think it's a deal killer by any means.

Besides above data are completely irrelevant to us because in SH4 we can play U-boats only in 1943-45 timeframe.

:rotfl:

tater asked if there was ANY data out there on U-boat torpedo performance, so I pulled a quote from an article posted on a very credible website. It just so happens that the data was sourced from the most productive time for U-boat victories. So yes, I would say that I am quite clever, thank you very much. :know: Not to mention, there are campaign mods out there that let the player play U-boat missions far before 1943.

So, we still sit here waiting for you to produce credible data to back up your arguments, yet all I still see from you is your BS parade. Either put up some supporting data or shut the hell up.

I would like the obstructed view as well. :yep:

Hey,guys, i cant lock on to the target;well i can for abt 5 sec regardles of weather, and than i lose the lock-is that suppose to happen?

Hydra 11-18-08 10:35 PM

I can't lock with the scope unless I am very close - about 480 yards on a stationary target. I can surface and lock with the TBT and get accurate shots, but not with the scope. Another pecular thing. I had a stationary tanker to shoot at and, looking through the scope, when I pressed the GSP button, the range increased rapidly but I was moving very slowly (1 kt.) One other thing, are most tankers and freighters moving at 18 knots when their tops speeds are listed at 11 to 13 kts?

Sardaukar67 11-19-08 03:32 AM

Just got sunk near Kiska again...same as before..I should avoid surface attacks..especially during day against DD!

Anyhow, how do you upgrade deck gun from aft to fore? When I do that in my USS Gato, I lose the deck gun crew slot altogether.

Bosje 11-19-08 04:44 AM

same here, had a few occasions where a warship took a shot at me, one hit results in a bulkhead + hull completely destroyed in a compartment -> death

had one interesting case where i landed on the sea floor at 360 feet. the boat kept colliding, resulting in slight damages all throughout. slowly crunched all compartments (as said in a manual/readme/on this thread somewhere), nothing i could do about it. death came after half an hour.

So I guess there is no hope as soon as you take even one shell?

edit: to clarify some details on two deaths:
-Porpoise vs taskforce, tried to sneak in on the surface, escort came very close and i was lucky enough to be already on my way down before they opened fire. a little DC damage which was repaired. a short while later at periscope depth inside the taskforce, they fired on my periscope, I took a hit to the conning tower and sunk like a brick, unable to control the descent at any point. dead

-Gato on the surface, keeping an eye on a convoy as it went past me on the horizion (all ammo already expended). went into 128x TC (won't be making that stupid mistake again, lol), took incoming shells as they spotted me, ordered crashdive as they hit me. engine room bulkhead and hull with full red bars, uncontrollable sinking. hit the bottom at 360 feet and got slowly eaten up by collision damages.

conclusion so far after 3 encounters with escorts: depthcharge damage / damage model seems to work very nicely but as soon as you take a shell you are dead

very intense, very scary, I am really getting afraid of warships :)
(although I was not too happy about being shelled at P-depth, I don't suppose it's possible to code them into ramming instead of shooting? And I was secretly hoping to be able to save my boat with repairs while sitting on the bottom but no such luck. I didn't stand a chance at all, lol)

I guess me dumb. Where do I find the download link for the patch ?

Like RFB-manual says, hits with shells 3" and over are very likely to destroy compartment and/or rupture pressure hull. Thus, taking hit from for example DD's gun almost always makes diving a death sentence. Of course, you rarely can outrun DD on surface either...:know:

I think it's quite realistic and definitely makes me think about those surface attacks at night again...:hmm:

Bosje 11-19-08 05:41 AM

yup that's what I said: warships now scare me mightily, like they should :)
just some simple feedback on the submarine damage model, that's all -when a destroyer opens fire you are pretty much done for since they shoot pretty darn well, too :)

You can do the surface attack at night but be decks-awash and slow. You are still hanging your butt out there but you have a good chance of being successful if you are low and slow. As far as getting shelled while submerging, remember the midget sub that was holed in the con before the attack on Pearl. Same deal here. Submerging or at PD depth can be fatal with cannon fire. Use your stealth.

Here you are very interested info from the same credited website. This info makes RFBeta sinking "reality" a pure Sci-Fi!

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show...postcount=2025

Moreover I suppose you are not so clever as you think. Especially if I quoted here technical sources that German torpedoes warhead's weight increased constantly during the war. Thus data from 1942 are not crucial to me if I play SH4 in 1943-1945 period. And I do not care about some third party mods which enable possibility of playing U-boats before 1943 because RFBeta mod do not allow this per se.

In sum now you should stop your BS parade aimed at defending unrealistic RFBeta sinking model at least for German torpedoes performance and shut the hell up yourself!

I am curious if so called Management ban me on this forum because otherwise Management would have to ban LukeFF, too! I simply adjusted words in my post to level of his verbal culture. :-?

Anyway I won't continue discussion in this thread because it is not very nice to read profane language from guy who did not read or do not understand properly my previous posts and even other users posts. This is in fact deplorable. You can wage discussion in this manner in your own body if you like it. I don't!

vanjast 11-19-08 11:53 AM

Well, that was interesting... ;)

Fincuan 11-19-08 12:06 PM

Yep, and still lacking the hard evidence he has been requested to produce. For once this smiley fits the situation at hand: :damn:
