Execellent skins Foofighters a think a 1000% improvement on the stock skins (rivets on welded hulls:nope: !).

I have a bit of a request. Recently been reading about US subs in the pacific and specifcally the USS Sea Dragon. She was refered to as the Red Dragon due to the fact that much of the black paint flaked off after a while on patrol leaving red primer showing underneath (infact Tokyo Rose coined the name). Would it be possible to do a skin like this? Perhaps not just USS Sea Dragon but some really battered heavily weathered boat skins. I'm talking really war weary here, flaking paint, patches of repainting and damage plated over from hasty repairs. I'm thinking about some of the weathered U boat skins in the SH3 mod forum as exeamples.

Do you have some photos ? I already tried Google but could not find anything.
At this moment I am pretty busy.. So it will take a while.
But really scretched, dented subs are definetly coming..

mrbeast 09-13-07 08:16 AM

Unforunately I don't have any pictures of her just a description by one of the officers that served on her. Tokyo Rose refered to a 'red pirate submarine'. The book says:

'The reason we know that she [Tokyo Rose] calls the Dragon a red submarine.....is because all the black paint topside washes off quickly after the Dragon gets to sea and the red lead used for priming the hull is all thats left as a covering. In a couple of days the Dragon will look like hell. The Canopus at Manila had done a hasty and rotten job repainting the Dragon'

'The last time I'd had a good look at the conning tower and shears of the Draon in bright moonlight it was evident that all of her black paint had washed off and hence she actually was a "red submarine"'

Don't know how much of a help that is, its from War In The Boats by William J Ruhe. I thought it would be an interesting idea for a skin to try as there was only about 4 different camo measures used by US subs during the war so there isn't the variety you get with U boats. Would be cool to go on patrol in the 'Red Dragon'.

Don't worry about taking your time you know what they say, 'good things come to those who wait'! Your skins are always well worth the wait!

FooFighters, I've a rather bold request: could you pack all your skins into one package (i.e. FooFighter's skin pack) that can easily be installed via JSGME? I've had some overwriting problems when isntalling skins. It's not bothering but I doubt anyone uses other skins.

mrbeast 09-13-07 09:09 AM

I've had a couple of conflicts but I just get round this by removing or reinstalling skins with JGSME before I play . I'm only ging to need one skin at once so its not a problem.

Thats one of the main reasons why I do not make a skin pack.

There are so many types to choose from (black, clean, weathered, special skins) and you can only use one per sub type.

It would give to much conflicts. Also you cannot use Salmon and Sargo together.
It will work, they have different hull skins but use the same tower textures.

;)

Granted its a new sub, but if that red is the lead primer, than that be a good reference of the color. Wish the engine would allow for realtime dynamic color changed on our subs like in real life haha:p

FF, is there a way you can get your sub skins set up so they follow the date-based format in the /Data/Submarine directory? By default, the stock skins will automatically change color at the appropriate date, but with yours one set will automatically overwrite the other. For instance, one can't have both the Gato early and late-war skins installed at the same time, but rather one has to manually enable and disable them.

I made for myself this kind of skin pack by using like for an example NSS_Gato_T01 a black texture and for NSS_Gato_T02 the gray one. Although haven't tested this pack well enough to say is there any bigger problems but everything seems to be working just fine

That is excellent work on those skins!

However....quick question...has anyone given further consideration on fixing the props (wheels). Is there anyway to mod the right-hand wheel to the left side of the boat and vise versa? Sorry for getting off topic.

Use the forum search, and stay on topic next time...

It is possible, pretty much like Misfit explains.
There is only one problem.
Both my earlier and the original skins uses the same reflection file (so called O01.dds file). This files was always based on the late war grey skin.

With the latest black Sargo (and all new upcoming black skins), the O01 file has an
alpha file specific for the black version.

So if you combine them like misfit, you must overwrite one of the O01 files.

It's not a real big deal, game will work fine.
Only if you sail on sunset with the sun on 90 degrees, it is possible that you can see a bit of grey skin reflection through your black skin.

Make sure that "Ship Normal Maps" is checked in the graphic options. I had the same problem with a skin and it magically appeared when I checked that option. Had me :damn: until I figured it out.

Hi Aaron,

That's strange.. tried the skin myself this morning and it worked without problems.

Just to be shure..
* Do you use jgsme ?
* If not, did you place the skin files in the Tambor map ?
(because the Gar uses the Tambor skin)

:hmm:
