I cut Das Boot a lot of slack because back in 1982 they didn't have CGI. I'm not critical, it's just something I notice, just as I do with Run Silent, Run Deep, because of the obvious juxtaposition between real footage and models.

The movie lost me the moment Harvey Keitel shouted "Dive" and rang the klaxon three times. The signal for a dive is two, surface is three. You might argue that it's a very minor thing, but it shows that they did exactly zero homework. After decades of similar movies getting it right, why would they suddenly get it wrong? Laziness, nothing more.

And it goes downhill from there. The story is a concocted perversion of history. The things they pull off are so blatantly over-the-top that it might have worked had it been billed as a comedy, except none of it was funny. As a movie and nothing more, sure it works. But so does The Conqueror. But it wasn't made as just a movie, it was claimed as a movie about history.

It's a movie that could only be loved by someone with no knowledge of the sea, the navy, or history.

Did the subs go 40 knots? did they sprout wings and propellers and start flying? no. what they did in the movie is possible entirely. You seem to be forgetting a critical element though. its a MOOOOOOVIIIEE. Of course hollywoods gonna put a little pizazz and awe into it. if it was anything like SH4 patrols, and im talking NORMAL patrols, (i.e the same old boring hours and hours of boredom, the occasional merchant ect.), it wouldnt be a very good movie. The uboat couldve done everything they said it to do, but its improbable, not impossible. For hollywood, the 1/10000000 chance something would happen is GOLD to them. I would love to see a movie where they literally strain EVERY part and aspect of their sub to the breaking point, and come out alive. overcoming the odds FTW. thats what U571 was about. a very VERY eventful and interesting and awesome movie. if they REALLY did zero homework, they wouldve made their sub sprout wings, and make their sub have the space and roominess of a battleship, and take on 8 escorts without flinching.

Are you HONESTLY going to let 1 extra Ring and a few minor things ruin and ENTIRE movie? Come on. If everything was down to the number, itd pretty much be a documentary. documentaries are entirely different from movies. Plus, these movies werent made for extremist sub worshippers such as yourself. its a mvoie most of the general public can sink their teeths into. Although some would most likely through the whole movie, CONSTANTLY ask "Whats the ballast tanks" or "whats flank speed" or "why cant they fire the torpdoes?". ugghhhhh. that would be excrutiating. Das boot, U571 and Other great classics were wonderful. They were pretty much on the money, by missing minor aspects but SO WHAT. its a movie, and you MUST MUST MUUUUST understand that.

The problem I found with U-571 was even for a movie it was pretty laughable. I think it took itself way too seriously as it crammed every sub-movie cliché in it's run time. That's cool if you liked it, but you can't fault others for not liking it. I'm sure there are people who think Das Boot, Hunt for Red October, or K19 were bad movies. It's a matter of preference.

Anyways, back on the thread topic. Here are a few shots from my last patrol before I got my new VIIB (technically again, I need to stop restarting the campaign).

I also think that U-571 was more like a comedy, not something to take in serious. The typical action hollywood movie built on a cheap entertaining script. My disappointment was to see good actors playing in it, this was not a movie for Keitel, more like for Bruce Willis or Will Smith.

You're trying to turn this into an argument, and it's not. For someone with no experience it might be a good movie. For someone who's been there it's a bad joke. I didn't go to see a good action movie, or a good movie, I went to see a movie about ships and submarines, and in that context it was a great disappointment.

Actually that is exactly what makes the 5-hour uncut version of Das Boot a great movie for fans of the genre.

No, it's a movie about a submarine, and they managed to get enough details wrong to make any sailor cringe. And I don't say you muuuuuust understand that, because I don't expect you to. As I said in the thread where you ranted about reality, if you haven't been there you can't understand. They didn't make it for me, and that's okay. As you say, they made it for people who know nothing of the subject. But for me is sucked. Period.

Sorry.

Sailor Steve, I'm curious what you think of a movie like Down Periscope or Operation Petticoat. U-571 was bad because it tried to be serious and was anything but. Where as Down Periscope was a comedy and didn't have to strive for realism as much, or did it just make it even more cringe inducing to you?

Hard to judge for me. I haven't seen Operation Petticoat since I was a kid, but I do have fond memories of it. I only just saw Destination Tokyo for the first time in maybe fifty years, and was surprised that I liked it more than I thought I would, since I know full well that no US submarine ever tried to sneak into Tokyo Bay at any time, let alone succeeded as an advance scout for the Doolittle raid in 1942.

I'm afraid I haven't really given Down Periscope a chance, since it came out at a bad time in my life and I never saw it. Your judgement on that is probably better than mine.

My problem is that I love history and I love ships. From the standpoint of sheer moviemaking Pearl Harbor is arguably better than Tora! Tora! Tora!. But one is a movie about the actual events and people and the other is way-too-long love story laid on top of actual events, and if that is the context then Pearl Harbor takes a poor back seat to From Here To Eternity. The love story is bad and the history is bad, so there is nothing much good to be said for it on either count.

I never said that U-571 was a bad action flick. I don't like action films enough to make that judgement. It may be better than I give it credit for, but I can't get past the garbage that passes for procedure.

I also apologize for tying up the screenshots thread. But anyone can scroll past this, and it will be long gone in a day or two.

I don't think anyone really minds considering how often other threads go off topic and then come back. Thank you Steve, though, for the reply.

Here's one I posted in the Photo Realistic thread, but since it's unaltered aside from size and jpeg format I figure it could go here too.

Very cool sunset pic, 7thSeal. Are you sailing with an AI sub in the campaign or is it from one of the single missions?

7thSeal 09-16-10 05:55 AM

Its during a campaign, just crossed paths with him after finishing up a patrol and was curious as to where he was headed. :)
