This is next to brilliant and typically Russian. Simple but effective.
When I was a recruit, I forgot my rifle 2-3 times, which was a big deal but the consequences where laughable.
Like some push ups and writing a page of "why i should not..."
I did learn - but sure not due to the 'severe consequences'.
I'm sure that if I'd had to carry a heavy wooden assault rifle with me for at least a day, I'd never forget my rifle again somewhere.
That problem occurred a lot as well when I was a drill instructor, actually daily. Recruits are not used to having a rifle with them all the time, so they often forget it after putting it next to a tree or something.
I loved 'stealing' the rifles as a DI myself whenever I found them leaning/lying around somewhere, then asking the recruit "where's your rifle?" and watching them going crazy because they can't find it... oh and then punish them for that.
Good times! :D
