View Full Version : How did you choose your Username?
danlisa

Just for fun....
Mine was an easy choice. I had to have one that the wifey could remember (she's not computer friendly, Bless:D ) so it's my first name + hers. Not original but easy to remember.
How did you decide on your username?
Kaleun_Saxi
10-25-06, 03:49 AM
Mine speaks for itself, too.
I play a submarine commander, so my military rank is Kapitaenleutnant, in short Kaleun (usual German abbreviation). My last name is Sachse (english Saxon), my nick name is Saxi, that makes Kaleun Saxi :smug:

Mine has been my standard online name for a quite a few years. I chose it randomly. I was signing up for a message board and grabbed one of my dad's tapes beside the stereo (recorded off his Vinyl) and it happened to say P Funk - Motor Booty Affair.
Since then I have actually become a hell of a Funkateer.

Well, I am more into Walt Disney's Donald Duck, really. I haven't read much of Tin Tin (I prefer Tin Tin the DJ instead  ), to be honest. But I found that image and really like it. It fits to "der Alte", als most Kaleuns were named in WWII by their crews (hence "Das Boot").

I chose mine when I volunteered at my local Free Geek, a computer recycling center that's been hugely successful here in Portland, OR. I did their "adopt-a-computer" program, where you work 24 hrs (not all at once! :D) and in return they give you a refurbished computer, called a Freak Box, loaded with Linux (Debian with KDE). Thus "geek" is a badge of honor.
I've been a puter "geekette" since 1995 and it seemed logical to choose shegeek72. No, 72 is not my age! :o

I chose mine because I enjoyed as a kid the novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne and this being a sub sim forum thought it quite appropriate. I half expected it to be taken already when I signed up but was lucky.

Hi Steed,
you've got a very nice signature. You should listen to the new Pet Shop Boys song "Integral" which deals exactly with that topic!
"...Everyone has
Their own number
In the system that
We operate under
We're moving to
A situation
Where your lives exist
As information
One world
One life
One chance
One reason
All under
One sky
Unchanging
One season
If you've done nothing wrong
You've got nothing to fear
If you've something to hide
You shouldn't even be here
You've had your chance
Now we've got the mandate
If you've changed your mind
I'm afraid it's too late
We're concerned
You're a threat
You're not integral
To the project..."
Just my nickname here in the netherlands :D

Michael Moorcock................. Sounds like a porn star to me.:hmm:
Oh no. He is a British writer (mainly fantasy) who lives in the USA. His most famous Saga was the ‘Elric of Melnibone’ one. In this one a Fighter-Sorcerer Emperor armed with a Sword from Hell (literally) roams the world killing and destroying everything in his path, until being destroyed himself by the Sword in the end. I thought it was quite appropriate for the U-Boat Commanders as well, as there are some parallels. :arrgh!: In any case I do suggest giving it a shot. You might like the books.:D :D
If not I guess dear Jena Jameson will always be there to……..’entertain’ the crews with her (let’s call them 'Moorcock') abilities:p :p :p

SkvyWvr is short for "Skivvy Waver" which is the nickname for a Signalman in the US Navy.

I chose mine because I play lots of strategy games (Hearts of Iron and such) and Warmonger was an appropriate nickname.

10-25-06, 07:24 AM

Respenus
10-25-06, 08:55 AM
My name was original Respen and is and male elvens name.
When I entered the world of internet (active not passive as I was before) I remembered that name when I wanted to play a MMORPG. But the name felt short, like somethings needs to be put at the end. So I wanted to "latinize" it, so it became "RespenUS".
That's how I got my name
And the US part, doesn't mean United States.

SubConscious
10-25-06, 09:05 AM
I picked mine really fast without much thought, unfortunately. It's a minor play on words, in that I wanted to convey awareness of submarines. I have a degree in Social Psychology, hence the interest in the subconscious.
Hmmm... It was probably a subconscious reaction. ;)
Had I given it more thought, I probably would have made reference to my father, who served as a Bosun's Mate / Gun Captain aboard three destroyers in WWII: The Hammann went down with the Yorktown at Midway; the Bristol was sunk by U-371 in the Med; and the Isherwood was struck by a kamikaze in Leyte Gulf. He was a lucky guy in that he survived, but you wouldn't necessarily want to be aboard the same ship as him. ;)
This is an interesting thread -

I don't know if you'll recognize this... He sounds like Uncle Albert from Only Fools and Horses. Very funny UK sitcom.
I always got a kick out of the flubbed line in Das Boot (English dubbed version),when after attacking the convoy, and about to be depth charged, Jurgen Prochnow says "This is it. Now we have the PAYOFF". The line should have been: Now its payback time.:arrgh!:

I use to use my initals as my name but it was kinda a crappy name so I decided to come up with something else. My favorite game is Vietcong, so I wanted something that sounded like it belonged so I took the name of the building I liked in at the time and added LZ to it, so Landing Zone Baker

Gogs was an plasticine/clay model kids animation series from the 90s. A bunch of prehistoric characters running around doing funny things. I got the nickname but I'm not honestly sure why. It might be the looks I guess but I hope not.....:88)

Mine was fairly easy: it's simply the Germanized version of my real name . . . with a 'von' tossed in for added prestige. ;)
Syxx_Killer
10-25-06, 10:10 AM
Well, it has been so long that I have had the same screen name now, I think I forgot why I chose it exactly.:lol: Way back in 1998 and 1999 (seems so long ago, doesn't it?:-?), I was playing Novalogic's F-16 Multirole Fighter, MiG-29 Fulcrum, F-22 Raptor, and F-22 Lightning 3 online. F-16, MiG-29, and F-22 Raptor could all fight in the same online arenas. It was great back in the day and the last time I really ever playing anything online. Anyway, I was part of a squadron for the F-16. Then, I was going by the name Burner. I got tired of that. After the squad pretty much disbanded I started my own for the MiG-29 called the Russian Knights. It did very well. I changed my nickname to Volk, then. At first we just allowed players who flew the MiG-29. When the big, highly anticipated patch was released that allowed F-22 Raptor to fly the same skies as the F-16 and MiG-29 I made the decision to allow the F-16 and F-22 into the squad. When F-22 Lightning 3 was released about a year later (1999), the squad slowed down. I then made the decision to disband. Shortly after I joined a squad the Air Aces Squadron. That squad allowed the F-16, F-22 Raptor, MiG-29, and F-22 Lightning 3. I was eventually put in charge of the F-22 L3 division of the squad. That is when I changed my nickname to the one I have now. I wanted something that I could identify with when playing online as well as something unique and different. Since I was pretty good at coming up on people's 6's and killing them I came up with Syxx_Killer. At the time I was also playing Delta Force online, and the idea for my current name also worked for that game, too. I was thinking of six shooter pistols for some odd reason. The nickname really stuck then. I haven't played any of those awesome games in a very, very long time. MiG-29 was my most anticipated game ever. Nothing comes close to the suspense I had just before the release. The MiG-29 is my favorite fighter plane ever. Consequently, you can still buy the games I mentioned above from Novalogic's website. The only other sim I had played that featured the MiG-29 was a game of the same name by Domark. It ran on Windows 3.1, came on two or three floppies (I don't remember), and had the most aweful engine sounds I have ever heard (then or now). I usually just turned them off in the game. However, the scenarios that came with the game were really fun. I played that game for hours. I picked it up at a flea market for a couple bucks. I still have it sitting in the bottom drawer of my desk.
Here's a site about the game if anyone wants a trip down memory lane:
http://www.migman.com/ref/1990_combat/MiG29Fulcrum/MiG29Fulcrum.htm
Sorry for the rambling post. I just get all nostalgic when talking about this stuff!:lol:

As to the name, my avatar should say everything that needs to be said.

On the Airfix Dogfighter the cheat code to get god mode was Hybris. I liked the name so I used it in PC Halo mulitiplayer were I earned the title "The god of Rocket Hog Drive-bys" so God...god mode Hybris!

But I’m having second and third thoughts about it.
My parents chose mine some 23 years ago for God knows what reason...:hmm: They had to get a special permit to have it excused from Argentinian naming laws. :-? I have used my nick for about the last 6-7 years i was given this by a co-worker in an office i used to work at "she was one of those green party organic tree huggers" "not to offend anyone but i am not one". Eolian means a subtle change caused to something that unless one is really aware you dont notice it has happened. Well, this was due to my computer skills i could go into the work servers and make subtle changes and really more or less like a ghost. I still do this practice from time to time, my first degree was in computer networking and i cant help myself from looking around whenever i have access to a computer system for any given length of time.

What war games do you play? I like COD (1 & 2) and BF 2 (the reactions from 2142 are lukewarm). Have not played either online since I'm on dialup, but hopefully that'll change soon since Portland has free wifi!

My favorite games are Starfleet Command III (heavily modded, but aren't they all?), Rome:Total War, and this game will be my favorite for a long time, I'm sure. On this one, I use the Grey Wolves Supermod.
In the old days, my favorite boardgames were all Avalon Hill games, with their Panzerblitz tactical-level games at the top of the list, along with NATO: The Next War in Europe.
BTW, I've never played online before, except with SCIII, when it first came out. My experience with online play wasn't very good, there.

Deimos01
11-03-06, 06:04 PM
Well, Deimos refers to astronomy and mythology both of which I have an interest in. In astronomy terms Deimos is one of the moons of mars along with Phobos.
In mythological terms, Mars is the god of war and his dogs are Phobos and Deimos which mean fear and pestilence. You've all heard the old Shakespear quote, "Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war". That is what he is referring to. So I was able to combine two of my small hobbies and come up with a name I've been using for several years now.
I woulda used Phobos but the first board I ever signed up for, that name was already taken.

I seem to remember once instance where the Germans were on the lookout for escaped POWs, and while on a train the undercover German was chatting up the suspected escapee, nattering away in German. After a bit he looked about as if looking for something, then looked at the suspect and asked, in English, "Do you have the time?"
The escapee lifted up his arm to peer at his wristwatch . . . then stopped dead. Busted! He hadn't even needed to say anything in reply, just the fact he reacted as he did was enough to give him away.

I chose mine from a classic sci-fi novel by Gerard Klein, "Les seigneurs de la guerre" (The Overlords of War). Aergistal is some kind of space-time anomaly where battles are perpetually fought, a game played by beings close to gods.

I got the nickname when I started skydiving when I was 17. At my local dropzone nobody went by their real name, we all went by nicknames.
One night we were sitting in the bar, drunk, and somebody found Czech-Russian dictionary.
It was originally Konus (or конус in Russian) which is an exact translation of my last name. It stuck for a little bit but then one of the other guys (an astrologist) told me that there was a Conus nebula so it was later changed to Conus.
00= year 2000. The year I moved to the United States.

Neat though. I've never seen it and it is interesting to see some of the reasoning behind some of the names.
As far as my name goes:
Well, I was swimming one night and I felt this bump and a sharp pain in my leg.......well, ok....maybe not.
I play online poker occasionally. In the food chain of poker players, there are sharks and there are the little fishes that get eaten by the sharks at the tables.
Every once in a while, I become the hunted instead of the hunter and I get bit by the sharks.

Fido is a shortened version of my early flightsim nick CFSFIDO. In real life if flew a Piper Cub for fun, but always wanted to fly a Spitfire or F-86 Sabre, so in Flight Sims my dreams came true. I was a member of an on line squadron of F-86D pilots, the aircraft was sometimes known as a SabreDog, so we all had canine related nicks.("Fido" is a common name for a pet dog) in case you are from out of town.;) Over time I just dropped the CFS and started using Fido. As a subsimmer Fido has a different meaning, it refers to a Mark 24 passive acoustic anti-Submarine torpedo from WWII, so it still fits, well sort of.

Arclight
07-11-10, 01:29 PM
Movie reference, for the most part:
There is a brief reference to 'Operation Arc Light' in the film Apocalypse Now by the character "Captain Willard", played by (Martin Sheen). As the river boat (PBR) carrying Willard is moving up the coast to rendezvous with the air cavalry escort, they hear the rumble of a B-52 strike in the distance. When the character "Chef" asks what's going on, Willard replies, "Arc Light, B-52 strike".
Apart from that imo carpetbombing looks pretty impressive (from a safe distance) and I'm a bit of a flightsim fan.

Mine?
Feuer Frei!: Triple idea behind this one: A legendary song by a legendary band- Rammstein (my favourite band), the German meaning: Fire at Will, or Open Fire, which was a command given to the men in the German Army in WW 2 and because of my German Heritage (born there).
From: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=99985

The R in ETR isn't used daily in the Navy. Normally its just ET3, but I added it to differentiate myself form the 3 other ET ratings. Some rates have three letters but only two are shown, this would be an example of one.

Ducimus
02-01-11, 11:50 AM
At the time i registered, my user name was my standard user handle in online gaming. I originally chose it playing Everquest. Yup, there i was, opening day of everquest. I had rushed to the stores, and created my account so i could be the first kid playing the new internet sensation. The next big thing in gaming!
So, i was creating my character, and was in a big hurry to get in and start playing right away, and then BAM, i was faced with "Choose your name". I sat there for 5 minutes thinking intently for an original name, but couldn't think of one. In my desperation to think of a name, i started looking around my room. The only thing that stuck out, was my"wall paper" from the military. And old unit patch fixed in a shadowbox caught my eye.
http://www.ducimus.net/redhorse/redhorse.jpg
"Ducimus.... hmmm.. Yeah, that's original, nobody will ever have that name! " I typed it in, and away i went.
It (semper ducimus) means either, "Always leading" or "always we lead". I'm not a study of Latin, but that's as close as i've found. The irony is, later on the movie Gladiator released, and then people thought i was trying to be a deliberate misspelling "Decimus". Along the same vane as some kid using some variation of "legolas", and all very much unoriginal. Nowadays i don't use the name as much, but it's still my first choice when creating a character name.

One morning, on my way into work, there was an accident, and I wasn't able to swing through the 7-11 for my cuppa; I stalked into the building in a foul temper. One of my coworkers - a totally laid-back, mellow, easy-spirited and good guy - says to me, "Man, you really are a growler if you haven't had your coffee." So I growled at him and went into my office, but the name stuck. I was "Growler" ever since.
It was only since I started my association with the Navy's WW2 fleet boats that I learned of the WW2 connection to the boat, and to her most famous skipper, Howard Gilmore. Gilmore was one of the Navy's six submariner MoH recipients, and I share my birthday with him, though his predates mine by some seventy years.

UnderseaLcpl
02-01-11, 01:14 PM
I didn't think about my name too much. I only joined this community to ask some questions about SH3 and resolve some technical issues. Next thing I know I'm attending subsim meets and restoration projects. I think Neal puts subliminal messages in the in the pics on the main page or something. If I'd known I was going to be around this long, I'd have chosen a way cooler name.
Undersealcpl (Undersea Lance Corporal) is just a variation on an old Marine joke about the versatility of Lance Corporals. The Corps loves to complain about how it is underfunded and how the other services get all the fancy gear. There's some validity to the complaints, as we often find ourselves using field-expedient measures to perform jobs that other services have specialized and functional equipment for.
By field-expedient, I mean using a ridiculous number of the most common enlisted rank (Lance Corporals) to perform a task that would otherwise be accomplished by heavy machinery or tech: If comms are down, you use runner lance corporals to relay messages rather than radios or sat-comms. If the truck or LAV or whatever is broken, you use pusher lance corporals to move it rather than an armored recovery vehicle. And naturally, if you want to sink Allied shipping in the Atlantic, you would use an undersea- lance corporals.
It's really an inside joke, and not the best choice for a screen name, but again, I didn't think I'd be using it much. I've been meaning to change it to just "Lance" or something equally less bothersome to type, but I've never gotten around to it.

I started as a car nut, and I always will be,no matter where I am.
My favorite car has always been the Ford GT40, which, as most of us know, ran a Ford 427 engine (actually, it was a mercury engine but thats splitting hairs)
But one of the terms used in racing, and elsewhere, is "fixing the problem with a sledgehammer."
I also spent a lot of time breaking rocks (not in prison, but at the farm in Illinois) and my weapon of choice was a sledgehammer.
so itall kinda fits together
Sledgehammer427

SH427
I don't know where people got Shammer, but I'll accept it. :O:
Its a longified version of my last name( Beton--->Betonov )
It was a high school idea as I tried to make my last name sound russian like and it stuck
P.S. Beton translated into english means concrete :D
Ha! Good to know that your last name is Beton indeed.
Beton translated into German means "Beton".
I will call you "Beton" from now on.
Dan D: Daniel is my given name. Back when I joined you had "Ice T, "Mel C" and the like as artist (dj) names. First A, Dan C, then B came to my mind but Dan D sounded better, more like a poser. Kickin it Old School !
My evil twin is "Ran D", the horny hamster, if you did not know yet.

I'll join in on the necrothread.
My name came about because I was being extremely creative on some other forum. It's the name I use almost everywhere, with some variants here and there on places that allow me to change my display name. Ex. Sgt. Missing Name, I Don't Have a Name, __________, Без имени, that guy, etc. On occasion, I use another favorite such as Hugo Stiglitz, Ernst Stavro Blofeld or Max Headroom.
...I love dogs. I have two poodles back home, and as far as I know they're driving my parents insane. The little fluffy bastards.

27 years ago I got into Civil War reenacting. Did it with a group in NC for a few years and during one mock battle I put my sword through my hat, lifted it and shouted "charge". A union reenactor said look "he thinks he's Armistead"...my group never stopped calling me since.
Our group did partake of the movies Gettysburg and Gods and General. No, I wasn't Armistead in either, they had a great reenactor who was also a stage actor do that role. I did die 3 times and you can see my face for a total of 3 seconds in Gettysburg... I'm the great looking guy, can't miss me.

When BBSs were first starting out, I always used Platypus as a screen name as I am interested in the species and it is, like me, difficult to classify.
One site already had a defunct user name of Platypus so I could not use it. Bastage!
So I adopted a deliberate misspelling of Platapus and it kinda caught on. I have never had any problems using Platapus as it is never taken LoL
Besides it is a lot easier to type than Vampiroteuthus which was my other choice. :har:

I was in a Calvary group for about 2 years when I had horses. Once we chared another group..union scum:O:. Our swords are thick metal, blunt, more like sligging weapons and sometimes we get a lil carried away. I whopped one soldier fairly hard and he fell off his horse. When the hat came off out falls two feet of perfect hair...twas a girl. This resulted in a fight with her boyfriend and it actually turned into rather a brawl...thankfully calm prevailed before anyone got seriously hurt.
I miss those days, mostly the balls afterwards thrown usually at some plantation house. Loved the women coming in wearing those big hoop dresses, lot's of fun trying to get them off later.

My username is the name of the latest submarine class in the swedish navy.
Im a swede in a subsim forum, so i thought it would be a very appropiate username.
Gotland is also the name of Sweden's largest island, and naval ships are by tradition always named after a coastal city/county.
But i chose the name purely because of the sub, i have no affiliation with the county of Gotland (never even been there).

You're lucky to get on one  I missed out on getting onboard an Oberon some years ago for a school trip to the Maritime museum in Darling Harbour. Because of some false medical condition that I was thankfully made clear of by a competent eye doctor :stare: 8 years later in fact (this is why I hate most docs)
Though I know I still have a chance, I just need to save up and go down to the museum. They also have a warship you can get onboard too :) And have a buddy to go with, I sometimes hate going alone.
Anyway, I chose my name because of this guy http://images.wikia.com/zoids/images/0/04/Geno_Saurer1.jpg (GenoSaurer). Who was later made a custom (mine) called Geno Mariner who can get submerged and all of that... though I just recently made him back into land-only. But it's blue XD I'm into mecha stuff but certainly not Gundam or anything, they're crap. And humanoid robots are so over used. That's how I got my name when Obie told me of this forum and I was stuck for a username. Nearly picked Warshark, a submarine sort of Zoid (he's got a funnier Japanese name...). But decided on Geno Mariner :)
