Hey everyone. I am posting this here because there are a lot of history buffs and people with a lot of WWII knowledge here that hopefully can help me out.
I have my Grandpas dog tags and I know he was in the CBs (US Navy) and that’s it.
Does anyone know how I can find more information? I would like to know what ship he sailed over to Europe on, what he was involved with etc...
Can I find more out by the information on the dog tags? Is there some kind of US Navy archives place that I could call? I have very limited information but I hope it's enough to find at least something out.
Any suggestions or help on this would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I would start at the Naval Memorial website. Lots of useful links that may help. Good luck. Let me know if you come up with anything.

Unfortunately, I know that most people's service records were lost after a fire burned most of the National Records Center to the ground in 1973. I'm pretty sure that was up to "S".
Here's a good place to start:

Lots of numbers and links to what you are looking for.

Thanks a ton for the help guys. I found the archives website that can help but they need his SS number. That was the only bit of info they required that I don't have. I will search around a bit and see if I can come up with it. Hopefully my aunt has it.:know:
Also, thanks for that link to the history of the seabees. Very interesting!

His unit number is instrumental in tracing his steps.

If you have the dogtags, you got the service number.

Yep, but it should be noted that they didn't use SS#'s as service numbers during WW2.
