The crew reported for duty on the morning of 1 January 1940 a bit worse for wear, but happy to have spent the holidays at home. Unlike our last patrol all personnel were accounted for (report on file for the seaman who did not report back from leave the last patrol), although we lost a valued Chief Warrant Officer to a transfer. He was our only qualified radio-operator, and although we have an upgraded type IID boat now, it saddens me that I am left to scrounge the barracks for a replacement.

My executive officer, Leutnant Heinz Gehard, has suggested he would like to be transfered in order to command his own boat, but I am reluctant to let him go just yet. Perhaps after our next patrol. I submit that a boat be designated for him at that time.

Overall I am dissapointed with the results of this patrol, although we did sink one British merchant and seriously damaged another. The limited arms of this boat make it difficult to successfully impede enemy shipping in the North Sea, despite the increased range, and I request my crew and myself be transferred to a type IX.

Respectfully submitted 11 JAN 1940,
Heinrich Braun, Leutnant Z. S.
Commander, U-9 -- 1ST Flotilla

Type II's can be fun, you have to get mostly one shot kills to make your tonnage count though. Did you mean upgrade to the VIIB or the IX, I don't think you can get the IX yet.
