I haven't gone skiing for about 10 years. I would say I am an intermediate level on downhill and I'm a terrible cross-country skier whose ability to telemark is embarressing.
Believe it or not learning to ski and going skiing once a week was part of my school curriculum back in Australia when I went to Geelong Grammar School at Timbertop, Victoria in year 9. We were only 45 mins from Mt Buller and Mt Stirling.
Oh yeah, I forgot to put cross-country in :-?. And there's no way to edit my poll....

You mayalos want to mention it's for snow, not for water!! Yes to snow, No to water!
And Yes to Grass skiing, but never again!

I live witin two hours driving time of the best skiing in the USA, Breckenridge, Vail, Aspen and Telluride. Yet, I cannot bring myself to battle the traffic both on the road and in lift lines to pay $80.00 plus dollars for four or five hours of falling on my ass.

Then go down Pikes Peak on a AT skate board! :yep: That's free.
I learned skiing in the Army way back in the day.

You lucky bastard... ugh. I have a solution for almost all of your problems. Go to Breck. Wake up at five, leave the house at six... No traffic, and no lines at 8 :D. And if there's a dusting, you get first dibs. I love eating powder for breakfast .

You didn't include an option for I am good or good enough. I am not terrible, but I am not pro or great, so I must choose great out of lack of options.

I spent eight years driving skiers to and from all the local resorts. I never had time to do it myself.

It happens all too often.
Dude, I was in that very Pass two years ago... Wow. It's 2 weeks into ski season and the unprepared are already dying.
But for the record: The area where this skier died was in the backcountry, i.e. an "out of bounds" wilderness area that is not owned by a ski-resort and is not patrolled by Ski Patrol. This is known as "Off-Piste" in Europe. People who ski in the backcountry should know the risks of doing so. You need to be prepared for the worst, with a beacon, shovel, and probe. You need to have a partner. You need to have decent knowledge of avalanche safety and the science of how they occur. You need to know when to hit a line and when to back off. You need to know how to save your friend. You need to know that one wrong turn and you could die. If you follow these precautions, you will probably survive. If you respect the mountains, they will be kind to you. But even so, freak accidents do occur out of bounds. Don't let this be a "reason" not to ski. A freak death miles away from help is different from being in a busy resort area. If you are a beginner, stick to the resorts and you will be fine :D. But backcountry is good fun as well. I've gone into the backcountry 6 times and am still alive to SubSim another day  . I should post photos from some of my trips. They are awesome.

I'm not terrible, and I'm not great. But I love it. I'm a part cross-country, part slalom skier. Both rule. Looking forward to winter.
Water-skiing I've never tried, but I hear it's very similar to regular skiing, technique-wise.
As for the safety of it, it's not more dangeorus than riding a bike, and cross-country-skiing's not that much more dangerous than hiking (save from the threat of avalanche). High-speed skiing (such as slalom) has some safety measures in it such as boots that release from the skis when you fall, to keep you from breaking your feet.

This should make the Colorado skiers happy.
Its snowing to beat the band down where I am. Tomorrow the temp will be 52°F (11°C) and 59°F (15°C) on Saturday so all is good.

I guess I`m pretty decent, but I don`t ski that much now. I prefer working out in the gym; warm, dry and the occasional hottie to stare at;)
When I ski now it`s long cross country trips with family and friends.

Don't hate me, remember I don't ski.
However if I did, I could have bought a lift pass that gives me 10 days in Vail (some black-out dates), and unlimited days in Breckenridge, A Basin, and Keystone for $370. Is that a good price?
If you must, hate me know.
$370... Whiskey. Tango. Foxtrot.

That's not that bad price for a season lift ticket.
