This is a tale of the current adventure of the U-77.

The u-boat crosses the Atlantic, to patrol grid DN17. The voyage was always on the surface, only dive one time.
After the patrol, since we were near, to have a lock the port of Curacao, in the chart, the harbor has a great depth, something that can make a difference if we encounter a destroyer. And we set sail.
The reached the island, and of course, the fuel tank was almost empty, I as the commander decided that after the raid, we would gate home by a strange phenomenon, that help the boat once. The boat passes trough a strange light and emerges is St. Nazaire.
The crew is suspicious since the first time, but the help is always good, this year Christmas is in home.
When we were near the harbor, the weather was very heavy, but no rain and a good visibility. The watch officer call me to the bride:
-“herr kaleunt”
Climb the ladder, and out the hatchet.
-“Yes Hans, did you see anything?” Hans Kühn – my first officer.
-“No sir, that’s it, we did not see any destroyer in the harbor vicinity”.
-“That’s strange, but no time to wonder why, we reach to far on the surface, let’s dive and penetrate the harbor”.
We climb down, the last one, Matrosenobergefreiter Arend Clausen closed the hatchet.
-“Chief, take us to periscope depth, ahead slow”.
-“Yes her kaleunt, bow 10 degrees, aft, 5 degrees.” – My chief engineer Edgar Akermann, a good man and my second in command.

The boat dive gently. I went to my hydrophone officer (Stabsbootsmann Heinz Möller, the best ear in the navy, so he says…) and ask:
- “Möller, anything?”
- “No sir, nothing, no sound head, very strange.”
- “Thank you, if you listening any sound let me know.”
- “Yes her kaleunt”.

Could it be a harbor with out a destroyer screen for protection? To good to be truth. After 5 minutes, I order to stop the boat. Climb the ladder to the attack center and seated on what the crew called the “bicycle seat”, just because some how the all crew discovered that I didn’t know how to ride a bike. (And I, in the real world, too…) Raise the periscope and began to look.
I thought to my self, no patrolling destroyers or other ships, the harbor has no ships. But then I saw what I believed to be an, Yes it is, a tanker, a T3 tanker, no wait, no one, but 4, and 2 small tankers.
-“ Gentellmen, I think that we are gone to have a good outcome”
The crew knew what that meant.
- “battle stations”
- “Mr. Akermann, prepare your torpedos.” - Matthias Akermann, a young ensign, my weapons officer.
- “Yes sir.”

Then I, the player, went to the harbor with god eye. I saw the 6 ships, plus one armed trawler, the flags, all american. I “paused” the game because I had to leave for a wile.
When got back, saw more of the harbour and thought to myself, I better save the game, but the game haven’t had a problem in latte times.
I got back to the boat and in the periscope menu I raised it. Blue screen apperd, error on a Dll.
Arrrrrgggghhhhhhhhh, my last save was on the middle of the atlantic, before reaching the patrol grid…

I reload and repeated. But now, there are destroyers patrolling the harbor entrance.

Now the 2 questions:

The wheater is now changed, its raining and low visibility. So I went on the surface until I saw the first tanker, but then after I was detected by it, the boat began to suffer damage in the bow compartments. Went to camera mode and saw the cause, a sub net.
My 1º question is this, at periscope depth or dived, with the boat stopped, the hydrophone officer could ear the net making noise, since the sea was not calm?
And to enter the harbor, one can dive the boat to 70m or more and pass beneath the net, since the depth is more than 1000m?

I will post the rest of the story, in going to play know.

Nice story.

Subnet modelling and ambient sound modelling was not a feature of SHIII. The only ambient hydrophones sound is the lapping of waves etc. No whales, no subnet chains clanking even in heavy weather.

I'm not sure what the deepest subnet is as I've never tried to infiltrate Curacao, but you can go over the subnet at about 8-9m as they float at around 10m. This WILL expose your conning tower but if you can porpoise fast enough and quiet enough and out of sight of the patrols you can do it. See my harbour Infiltration manual: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=96843

You might have problems though in heavy weather as you will likely get hammered against the top of the net.
