So I started a new career, so I could try out the type IX boats. My plan was to use an unupgraded type VII until I had enough renown to kit out a IX. I had an awesome first patrol.

Second patrol, 1st attempt, sank a few tankers using cannon fire to save torpedoes. On the way back, blunder into a convoy, and get ready to ambush. I'm in perfect firing position, I have a full load of torpedoes...and the phone rings, I had time compression on, somehow an escort detects me and is practically on top of me, I crash dive, get hit by ONE depth charge, and visit Davy Jones' locker :nope:

2nd attempt: No convoys, but lots of single large ships. First ship I encounter is a passenger ship in broad daylight :sunny: once again try and save my eels, and empty half my ammo worth of cannon fire sinking it (its 1940, so many big ships are still unarmed). Later sink several more tankers, and find 4 more T3/T2 tankers in a relatively small proximity on the map. I surface, then go into the crew management screen to reassign my watch officer and...the GAME CRASHES :damn: and being the idiot I was I hadn't saved. Grrr I could have cleared 60,000 tons which would have been a personal record, and doing it so early in the career would have been great for the medals awarded to crew members and the renown to quickly get a type IX.

I always save after important events. Clear of harbour, reach patrol grid, sink a ship, get alert of convoy, I save after making contact with a convoy hoping I wont have to reload.

As for the phone ringing... I love immersion but I pause at any moment where I can't get back to the ship in a second.

Just had an awesome first patrol myself.

Type VIIa, assigned out to the other side of Ireland, found nothing but a single tramp steamer and out of boredom wasted 2 eels on it. Decided eventually to head for home and instantly got a radio report of a Task force in the area. As luck would have it, It was about 50 Km out from my current position and headed straight for me.

Ended up on a head on collision, went to periscope depth and found myself right in the centre. 3 DD's, 2 Cruisers and 1 big fat Illustrious carrier.

All forward torps found their mark on the carrier, while 1 rear hit and damaged 1 Southampton class cruiser. Carrier eventually came to a stop, but lanched frequent air patrols, so surfacing was out of the question, and the destroyers and cruisers sped away.

Fortunately I had enough eels in reserve to finish off the carrier, then make the long trip home.

Instant promotion was awaiting me when I got home to Wilhelmshaven, and now I can't wait to get home from work to start my next patrol.
