View Full Version : Dotted lines around ships, and sensor questions

I'm assuming those dotted lines around a ship are some sort of sensor radius (visual?) I noticed some ships have multiple ones- destroyers have this cone thing in front of them, for example. Any idea what each of these are? Might be good to know so I can stay outside that 'circle o death' :yep:

Also, the manual suggests positioning your uboat toward/away from an enemy ship sending asdic/radar, to minimize your signature. But seriously, does the game actually model this? It sounds neat from an immersion standpoint, but as for avoiding radar/asdic:

If my detector detects radar, I'm assuming they can already see me on their radar

If I'm getting pinged by asdic, the ship is so damn close anyway I doubt minimizing my profile is going to make them miss me.

I've found it does help to show the smallest signature for the enemy to pickup. I try to keep my stern pointed towards the ones trying to hunt me down. So far so good. That's with the Sensor mod installed, with stock SHIII not the Super mods. BTW... get the decoys as soon as you can, they do work.

Never thought about the dotted lines and cone before until you mentioned it. Actually I've never seen anyone ask about it before.... unless I missed it. but it sounds reasonable that that's how it might work in SHIII.

The dotted lines, circles and such do, acutally represent the units sensor ablities. The cone you see in the front is his active sonar cone. The "pacman" shaped circle with the wedge towards the stern is his passive sonar listening area. The two outer rings are visual range. Im not sure if radar range is represented or not.

Kind of cheesy to see ingame, but for testing purposes, its very handy.
