I am trying to apply the 1.4 patch over a new/clean install. I keep getting the following error message..."Unknown Version...sh3\data\menu\en_help.txt"
I have tried this three times...delete SH3 using add/remove programs via Windows...when prompted I also delete all user/save game files also.
I have d/l the 1.4 patch three times.
I have scanned my hard drive to make sure there are no other SH3 files, mods, etc. still lingering out there somewhere.
I have run "regedit" and made sure nothing else is hidden...3 times also.
I had previously played SH3. I recently added the Grey Wolves Mod, but made the mistake of having it overwrite SH3 with out going thru the mod installer program.
So I deleted everything...started over...reinstalled SH3, but now can not apply the 1.4 patch.
Help.

This is most likely your problem:
There are four different 1.4 patches. There are the US and European version, and there is also the CD and downloaded game version. So if you've installed the US version SHIII from the box using the disk only the CD/US patch will work.

Thanks.
I have been d/l the US retail version of the 1.4 patch to go with my "box" version of SH3.
Months ago I did a clean install with this patch and everything went OK.
Not now though...:damn:

Where are you d/ling the patch from? I tried searching here and found this thread:
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=96796&highlight=unknown+version+patch
but I'll also keep looking into this for you, too.

D/l the patch directly from the Ubisoft website.

Have you completely removed all traces? Including deleting the entire Ubisoft directory in program folders before reinstalling?
After the reinstall, if you still get that error message, just delete that file – and while you’re at it, you may as well locate (in the same Directory) the files, de_menu.txt, en_help.txt and en_menu.txt – and delete them all (all four of them).
Then run the 1.4b Patch installer again.
It will replace those files.
(If it works, thanks go to Chrystine from the Ubi forums, which is where I found this . . . toldja I'd keep digging for an answer for you)

Yeah man, I did an uninstall to start fresh. Got the same message. I had to get rid of the SH3 folder in documents folder. I then did a search for anything else relating to SH3. I found 4 and deleted these. I had no problem after that. ALL traces must go away!

THANKS!!!:p
You're very welcome. I assume that worked. :p But the real thanks goes to Chrystine over at the Ubi forums. It was her post that I got the info from. All I did was find it.

I had this same problem trying to upgrade my downloaded version of SH3 to V 1.4b. Having purchased it in the US, I tried the Download US verson of the patch.
Did not work
I tried, even though I knew it was wrong the DvD US patch
Did not work
Just for S&G I tried to download the European/Asian Download patch
Did work!
If you are having problems downloading the 1.4 patch try a different "country" version even though you purchased it in the good ole USA.
Took me three evenings to figure this out
