View Full Version : NYGM - I'm afraid

Well, I've started my first patrol with NYGM in a VIIB 1939.

I have to head through the Channel to get to my patrol zone. Passing Calais, I was thinking this might not be too difficult as I'd only seen 3 armed trawlers.

Now I'm north of Normandy. I've not seen one single merchant but I get attacked by a pair of Hurricanes constantly. They're obviously reporting my location, since a couple more armed trawlers headed directly for me. I dove and lost them.

Later, I spot 2 destroyers heading my way from the west. I dive and run silent letting them pass me by. After they're nearly out of sight, I surface to top off the batteries. I come under air attack 2 more times in a 10 minute span. When I surface after the last air attack, I spot a Destroyer heading my way from the north. It turns out to be three. The two to the east are now approaching. I dive and take her down to about 58m which gives me about 3-6m above the floor. Everything is getting depth charged to hell and I have a lot of sonar contacts. Out of curiosity, I use my external camera  to see what the hell is going on.

I count 6 destroyers all circling my position. After about 2 hours of carpet DC'ing, I'm just letting it run silent at 2kts even though I've had a couple close calls. No damage yet, though. I hear some more commotion above and decide to take a peak. The six destroyers are still circling and dropping but I hear planes overhead. Oh hell. They look to be Me109s though. Whew! What do they do? Drop their bombs right on my head! Those Luftwaffe flyboys couldn't hit the broadside of a Battleship with accuracy like that! At least one of them strafed a Destroyer but I think it only pissed him off.

Anyway, I'm stuck down here, hiding for the long run because 6 destroyers have enough DCs to last about 3 years it seems. :o I wouldn't be surprised if more joined in shortly.

Going through the channel to get to your patrol zone...:nope: You are a brave sailor. Going through the channel is almost like wanting to die. Its heavy defended from the start of the war, and my opinion is that its better to go around the british isles (North of Scapa flow...) to get to your patrol zone. I Hope you get out of there alive, mate!

It's still 1939. He may be able to use it for one or two patrols until it becomes choked with mines. ;)

Well,

I'm Going in. (to the channel) Wish me luck ;)

I love this mod. I've now left GW in favour of this. talk about getting pounded.:o

I had a strange event on my second tour though. I decide to go for scapa to have a look. In though the east route. However before I got there I had several reports of "ship spotted" from the direction of scapa. I was well in visial range of the east passage but could not see any ships. :-? Then suddenly a PT boat came though the east passage towards me. I was running decks awash , gave the order to dive then suddenly a CTD !!! first one for ages. So I had to restart the tour. Anyway I hope this mod does prove to give CTD's. Otherwise I love it.

Nah, that's fun actually a lot of fun...! Nothing beats ealing a destroyer and hear it sink, then move out of the area only to come back some time later and try to eal some more while they're all nicely grouped together

You must be playing one of the easy versions. By all rights, English Channel is the Axis code for Certain Death.

That's Windows for ya!

On a side note. in one of my U-Boats, U-123, I used the Channel as my sole hunting grounds. How did U-123 end up lost, you ask? Destroyed in base by a... reformatting. :shifty:

Hi guys,
If attempting the English Channel, or any Coastal area near the English coast, I strongly recommend submerging for the day light hours and only attempting passage during the night.

Also remember that once spotted the Air response will be actively looking for you and will be for many hours. I would recommend in these instances submerging for at least 6+ hours.

Heh.

Actually I had been tooling right along at periscope depth for awhile at one point. However, having my Obs Periscope up didn't help against the air attacks as they zeroed right in on me.

The reason I started running on the surface was that my battery was down to about 1/4 after a few hours of that business and it was still mid-afternoon. :o

Note to self: Must travel at ahead slow while submerged due to battery life. This ain't Duracell.:yep:

Another thing - when silent running, change the telegraph to the pitometer display and select 1kt manually as your speed....that will ensure you are travelling as quietly as possible.

As for the rest....there's a reason it's called the ENGLISH channel!!!

W00T? Did you forget to upgrade your sub with the brandnew hamster mod? It adds 1000 hamsters with their wheels connected to the battery to replenish battery charge during long DC hunts.
But be sure to apply oil to the hamster wheels before rigging for silent running!

I play 94% realism with GW 1.1a and NYGM and have very little problem making the channel in the early part of the war, just travel submerged during daylight and surface at night.

After 1939 the channel will have mines and subnets which makes it extremely more difficult but easily done by zooming your map all the way in to see the deep areas through the channel and plot a course through those areas.

They're recalling that upgrade, until they find a way to fix the rapid-oxygen-depletion problem. And the rapid-food-depletion problem. And the stinky-mess-cleanup problem.

I couldn't upgrade to the Hamstermobile. I was thinking of taking the Gerbilmatic out of an old Yugo and installing it, but they tend to eat your Captain's Log with your record of sinkings if you install them before your first patrol. I guess they don't like the change of scenery.
