View Full Version : Your experiences with U-flak

I have SHIII with no supermods (I have some cosmetic mods like the ship explosion mod, etc). I decided to get U-flak with three quads. Before, I had trouble damaging planes, and generally if I did shoot down a plane, they inflicted far too much damage/casualties to make it worth it. But now with my u-boat bristling with AA guns, I figured I'd even the score.

I decided to do a 'test patrol' by sailing near england leaving my radar on, to lure in planes. I was pretty impressed with how many planes I could shoot down, but again the victory was costly- the conning tower puts so many men abovedecks that one unlucky bomb hit takes out a lot of crew members :nope:

However, I still intend to keep the U-flak, because it is certainly devastating against a small number of planes; the clip size and amount of lead in the air certainly rips apart approching planes.

I believe it's general practise during the late war. You don't need a deck gun (not usefull because ships are armed, even merchants) and there are a lot more planes. U-Flak is a must later on in the game!

Yeah, one incentive to getting it was that using the deck gun was getting too dangerous anyway. Plus it is so much fun lighting up aircraft :|\\

Tell the watch officer to engage aircraft at long range, and sometimes you nail planes before they even drop their bombs. Another hysterical thing that happens is having a crippled plane crash into a wingman when they are in tight formations.

I have been thinking about getting a U-flak but only if I can run into air patrols with 50+ planes. (I'm seem to be obcenely good at hitting planes for some reason)

Stock damage model, Uflak is alot of fun. Its alike a mini game unto itself. Just configure a 7c/41 or 7c/42 with it in the basic.cfg, and start a test career in 43-44, bring it out and man the guns. Fun stuff.

Funny U-flak has been mentioned. I had one for an escort out of Lorient on my 30th patrol on June 11th of 43. Periscope ID said it was a Type VII/C41. She ran along with us for 20km. Good thing as we were attacked by 6 Sunderlands. We shot down 2 and they got 2, but they were sunk by the last 2.

what boats can mount the 3 flak guns? is the uflack a particular boat or just a configuration of a boat?:o

Its a config of the VIIC class you can get a U-flak by selecting the 4th watch tower type

No Jimbuna, I'm not using GW just yet. The only mod that probably has this U-Flak is Harbor Traffic 1.47, which I am using..... along with 70 other mods. ;) LOL And I've only seen it the once so far. And that was a lucky screenshot only because it was so close.

I ran a U-Flak with 3 x M42 Flakzwiling emplacements. Things were going well, until a downed aeroplane actually hit my U-Boat.

If anyone is interested, there is some footage of the experience here:

:o That...was...soooo......coool!!!! Excellent video, mate! I have never managed to get all of my flak guns to be the twin 3,7! Ehhh...how do you do it...? Do you need the "flak conning tower" thing?:oops:

Jimbuna, I saw the U-Flak June 11th of 43 heading out on patrol from Lorient. Was heading directly south from the mouth of the channel for about 20kms. It was off to my left about 2000 meters. Have patience and you'll see one too...hopefully.

Dietrich, that was a great video. How'd you get one to run? I didn't think they were an option in SHIII. I'm sure more of us would like to give it a try too.

yeah, HT 1.47, or 1.46, i forget which. It's the only what i call "core campaign" mod that has it for some reason. Unified campaign (or UC for short), which in all acutalilty is HT 1.48 doesnt have it. Ultimatly i think both GW and NYGM started with specialized versions of UC as a base foundation and everything built up on it from there. Why AI Ulfak only appears in HT 1.47ish i've no idea. Something that cool, you'd think they'd have ported it into next versions. If it does exist in later versions, i've never seen it.

You need to have a VII with the type 4 conning tower. To get three heavy flack positions, you need to ckick on one of the positions and then selected the heay flack of your choice. Choose the next position and repeat the process to change it and the next.

Then your ready to do some serious hunting!!:arrgh!:

If you are not using any other mods apart from GW, you are probably using high time compression. TC more than 256 will reduce the airplane spawns.

I still fear the B-24 in the stock game:eek:, they lob the bombs at you from long range and they have plenty of them!! I can get away with 3-4 flak qualified gunners, I just make sure that there is A qualified petty officer at every gun. The Watch Officer also has flack qualifications.

If I'm going duck hunting, I up the ammo for the 37mm, as well as change the amount of ammo per slot (so it fits in the screen!).

It also pays to have the gunners open fire at close range, otherwise when you destroy an aircraft it might crash into you!!

Select only closing targets if you have multiple tagets. So your shooting at the one on the bomb run, not the one limping away.

Good advices, mates! The problem i had, was that i had just left port, and my ability to maneuver freely was limited...And those B*stard Brits came so quickly upon me... I will try again, trust me! Thanx again!

Before I installed Gray Wolves so my game was 100% stock
I had a U-Flack (3 sets of guns 4 barrels each) and I would leave my radar on and boy oh boy bring 'em on. Some problems with spitfires but not much, and because of the way the liberators fly it would be difficult to gun down those as they stay too far away
Everything else was fair game....
I'll try this with GW again...

does the U-Flak have much success in GWX?

Jimbuna
04-09-07, 05:47 AM
You should always remember that the 20mm quad is lethal, but only to close by and medium range targets.....the 37mm is better suited to long range targets such as Liberators :yep:

I guess one gets even better result if one specializes all the flak crews for their work. Or is there no difference in this respect....?
