I was sinking a convoy in a rainy storm with my deck gun in the channel that separates England and Ireland. Everything was going fine then I collect some bills fees from my co-tenant and when I come back (15 seconds tops) it says on screen "Abandon Carrier" I wasn't under attack 15 seconds ago so I am a bit concerned. Last thing I did before getting up was blowing up a small merchant ship in a big explosion about 300 to 400 meters out.

Is there a way to know what is the cause of your death ?

Thank you.

Usually I see what killed me or at least what my course, speed, and depth was when I die so I can kinda go off of that but like you I won't mind knowing what just sunk my boat.

Or Bernard was depressed and started to smoke in the Torpedo rooms.

Probably damage from the small merchant ship explosion. Some ships have ammunition as cargo, and when they blow up, if you are within about 1000M, you usually end up getting caught in the resulting blast.

Possibly an air attack?

That's what the ESC key is for!

You may have been run over by a ship, or been spotted by one, who may have opened fire on you (depend on the year you are playing in). A escort could have made an appearance.

I doubt an aircraft due to the conditions, but Bernard is a possablity!:rotfl:

Right answer!

And Bernard doesn't smoke when he is depresed. He sits on an active torpedo and everyone else is too scared to say anything. But then blow up sooner or later (preferably sooner :yep:)

Thank you.

No unfortunaly there is now way to tell after the fact what "killed" you.

While were on that topic I sure hope they do something better than the "poof your dead" death screen in the next version. Very anticlimatic.

in a rainy storm with my deck gun :hmm: Hrm... no comment.

Im guessing that you either hit a mine or hit a ship shrouded in the rain.

Yes that is what the esc key is for ! :know:

I remembered that I was taking screenshots when the explosion happened. On them it is written "We're taking damage sir!" in the same minute of the explosion. So I guess I learned the hardway not to stand close to an ammo ship that blows up :know:

U-132 anyone?

It is now believed that the boat fell prey to its last victim on 4 Nov, 1942. The ammunition ship Hatimura (http://www.uboat.net/allies/merchants/2373.html) exploded in a huge explosion and U-132 (http://www.uboat.net/find_boat.php3?find_boat=132) was probably within the lethal radius. 47 dead (all hands lost).

Yipes... what a lovely supprise !

I started a new career in 1942.
Went on to do a harbor raid on Tobruk. So easy and so succesfull. I sank 2 C3 cargo ships without any problems. So I went on to press my luck. I went deeper into the harbor and sank 2 more ships. (1 with those shermans on deck and another one for 6000t or so).
Suddenly a destroyer pops up. In the harbor was only 1, but just on the outer side which I already sent to the bottom using 1 fish. I sneaked past 2 others on my way in but those were at least 9km out. So I was a bit of guard and because of the shallow waters I decided to battle it out with my deck gun. But I underestimated the threat..
I see the smoke of three turrets in the distance but all shells don't fall miss widely.
Seconds after that another explosion signing incoming shells, a second small destroyer opened up on me. Through my binocs I can see that I'm no match for that first zerstörer. 1 fortified turret at the front and 2 at the rear. (don't know class... I'm still noobish to this game) The second one is a smaller vessel.
With my deckgun already pointed at them I decide to take a lucky shot before diving to safety. My WO yells out the distance and I take aim at the bow. A perfect shot... I see the shell plunging down at ripping off the front turret. A bit extatic I get risky... I aim for the second little vessel and again I hit it right in the middle followed by a big explosion. (dunno what that was blowing up)
Now I'm getting cocky taking on both destroyers with my deckgun when I should go into hiding. I score several more hits on the larger destroyer but just below those aft-turrets. But I surely hit some into its waterline. But then the inevitably happens. I receive several hits, I check my damage screen. Several compartments are flooding, hull integrity down to 91% (subnets already did some damage before)
I go back to my deckgun but then a frightening picture, it almost happens in slowmotion.... I see a bundle of shells heading straight towards me. My deckguncrew just got wiped out. That's it I'm fleeing to the depths. But I've got 1 last fish to take revenge. (fired the rest of them in the harbor, only got externals left)
A hit! But not where I wanted it... I got him just before the first shimney but it doesn't look critical enough... In the meanwhile I'm struggling with the floodings.
I don't want to get stuck in shallow waters with 2 destroyers nearby and now that they're both just above my planned exit... (marked where I came in for the subnets)
So I blow ballast and try a fast getaway, hoping that I hit that large destroyer in the engine room so I will only have to deal with the smaller one. I flee under a rain of shells that get my hull integrity down to 71% but my plan seems to work. Only the smaller one is following me and seems that I hit something vital with that one deckgunshot as he's not catching up with me... I'm slowly winning ground.

Looking back I surely was lucky to get out alive from that... But again I had to push my luck... I was heading back to homebase but after loading the externals in my tubes and a no contacts I decide to go check out Valletta.. Just planning to do a pass 12km away from it. I should have known better with such a badly damaged sub.
Somehow I got closer then I planned to be. There was some medium fog and my watchcrew didn't noticed the destroyer sneaking up on me until it fired at me, directly scoring a hit. I go to the tower and see at least 3 destroyers in a vicinity of 5km all pointing their lights at me. A bit panicked I crash dive... But floodings in the front torpedoroom a quarters togheter with damaged diveplanes get me plummeting to the bottom. I crashed hard, my sub is in a critical state. Floodings in every compartment, hull integrity down to 53%.
I can't sit still and play dead, I have to do the repairs. I check my external camera and count 6 (!) destroyers heading towards me at high speed. It doesn't take long before the first one finds me... He takes a perfect run just over me, my crew is getting tossed everywhere inside. But I live! Hull down to 41% but no extra major floodings. I decide to stop the cheating (checking outside with external cam) and get myself in the command room to get that feeling described here by others so many times. I start counting down the time for the repairs... Only 6minutes, 6 long minutes and with some luck we might get out of this. But this means I have to endure at least one more depthcharge run. Only 2 ships are close and the one that just attacked has to set up his attack run first. So it's the smaller one that's coming for me now I remember from my brief time in the tower. The agonizing wait... I can't hear the props get louder. 'Depth charges in the water sir' I see the scared faces in the command room. Again my sub starts shivering, lights blink, crewmen call out.. But yet again we manage to get through and yet again without major damage.. (but my hull is down to 33%) Finally I can get her to silent running mode and we get loose from the bottom, those 63meters. I start to take evasive action purely on instincts and sounds that get through the hull. But one prop is getting closer and closer.
"Depthcharges in the water". Ah crap those can't be far off, this is gonna be balancing on the edge of a knife.
But then... I decide to switch to the command room and my pc just pops out, just a reboot when I switched screen.

Surely I was doomed to rest on the bottom, but this is a strange twist of fate. Now I don't know whether or not I should load my previous savegame (taking on those destroyers in Tobruk) Or just start a new career cause I was a goner anyway.

Well anyway this is my first big report I post here. I was just getting bored of the game since it was so repetitive all the time, even after I installed GW. But this patrol relaunched my interests. So I'll be hoping to post more of this if you guys welcome it.

ps: sorry for the chaotic writing style, I'm still having the adrenaline rushing through my veins. :)
