I only recently bought SH3 from the subsim site and immediately installed the GW mod. After completeing only two of the naval academy lesson I was assigned the U46, 7th Fltoilla out of Kiel.
So I'm on my first patrol looking pretty sharp on the bridge wearing my grey slickers, looking back at the Danish Coast after escaping to the North Sea in the first week of September 1943. My lookout says "ship spotted". I turn my bino's on him and see a lonely British Merchant flag flying.
Persicope depth, starboard turn, calculate my torpedo settings and fire away.
No sooner is the torpedo out of the tube and running hot I get this message form the BdU "don't sink unarmed merchants." :damn:

I wouldn't sweat it. I'm sure every sailor on board was armed. With at least two. :p

MY moment was attacking an convoy and watching an Tanker burning.
I tuned up ''Burn Mother..... , Burn'' and when she was sunk I was about to look around for my second victim I turned my Scope 180º and I could just manage to say ''Ow Sh!t'' before the hull of an Escort rammed my sub. and DC afterwards.
Here we go again! :rotfl:
WaW patrol, I think the year was 1942. I had sank only a few small merchant on that patrol and messaged FDU Herr Sebastian Hellstrom for permission to go to port of Valletta, Malta, to photograph the port defences (In WaW I we had intelligence department, but it seems that in WaWII it´s not in so big part). The weather was bad, with very low visibility. I approached Valletta from NW. I was about 3km away from the port when my hydrophone started picking up warship contacts. Five destroyers and one torpedo boat.
I creeped along the coast and I already had visual on the lighthouse lights when suddenly a DD got lucky and started to ping me. Soon everyone of the the five DD´s were on top of me. To make it even harder, it was very shallow where I was atm, max. 30m. The deeper waters were just 9km to north, but it took me almost 1½ hours (real time) to get there. In the process, I was depth charged with ALOT of DC´s, cant remember the figure anymore but it was around 100. The boat got damaged pretty badly, but I managed to reach the deep waters and lose the DD´s.
I managed to fight another day, till the next patrol I was sunk. :nope:
That has been the only time, I´ve really been scared in SHIII! My hands shook everytime a DC exploded. Priceless. :yep:
I was playing a campaign last night "First Time in ages", november 8 1939, weather rain heavy, fog heavy, wind speed 7kts..visablity was poor around 380 meters, I was surface attacking a medium merchant with my DG when out of the fog came a Black Swan doing 15 kts " Destroyer on attack run, I actually shouted " Oh Crap" ( i was in the middle of eating something ) then i hit C " ALARMMMM i cashed dived. got hit by the K guns, heavy flooding, about 10 minute later i got back upto periscope depth, then "DESTROYER OF ATTACK RUN" again this time it was a Flower "Eurgh" after 2-3 hours "real Time" i have 7, YES 7 DD's all pinging me and a total of 4 "destroyer on attack run" I lost count of the DC's they dropped, i then found out It was a SMEGGING TASK FORCE!!! http://p4.forumforfree.com/images/smiles/icon_eek.gif I manage to sink some and outrun the rest, i limped home back to wilhelmshaven on the surface from AM 52, luckly the weather was so bad i wasn't picked up.
Total ships sunk 7
6 warships ( 5 DD's, 1 southamton class cruiser )
1 Medium Merchant
After all that i was actually physically and mentally shot to pieces.

I was on a patrol heading south (northwest of the Spanish coast). The seas were calm and I was steaming along at 9 knots in my IXC using time compression. I got a ship sighted message and went up to the UZO to look. It was the dead of night and pitch black but I did find the ship using the bearing the watch officer reported...it was a medium merchant.
I was hunting for capital ships and didn't want to waste any torpedoes, so I decided to ignore it. But just then I got another ship sighted. I looked again to find another merchant. Apparently, I was on the trailing edge of a 6 knot convoy. As I stood there contemplating whether to attack the convoy, there suddenly was a load explosion and the bow torpedo room reported flooding.
I shifted to bridge view and turned to my right just in time to see a Flower Corvette about to ram the boat! It did and everything rocked back and forth a few times. Since the weather was calm, I quickly manned the deck gun and brought it around pointing at the hull of the Corvette which was now stuck against my boat. I fired one round and the ship exploded into a ball of fire right in front of me! It took a couple minutes for it to sink and slipped off my boat as it went under.

:x Yesterday I had a Holy **** god dammit package.
I was shaddowing an convoy and my hydro picked up an Loud supersonic sound of an engine of an Cruiser/BB/Carier. I went on intercept point and I waited so the middle row would pas. there it was an Brit Carier!!! in the middle of an large convoy? must be something of the GW mod.
I couldnt wait to sink it I opened all my 4 Doors to launch my eels into her.
Now before I could press the fire button the POWER WENT OUT!!!!! :damn: RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I sat their in my dark room...with my head on my hands......I went to the house power switch but the whole street was black.
Now I have to start over again...Hope I will find that convoy again in grid BE heading North.
while attacking a convoy in the daytime in '41:

Hello
I have two moments of ‘truth’ as I like to call them.
1. Bernard did it again!!!!!!
I was somewhere along the Irish coast around 1941 on a partially cloudy day. The waves were about 15 meters but visibility was quite good. So I left Bernard in command of the watch, put time compression to about 34 (I think) and started reading a book. I was also watching the monitor to see what is going on, when suddenly I saw the stealth meter getting red, without any indication for a spotted ship or plane. Immediately I put time compression again to 1 and jumped on the conning tower, only to get a slight glimpse of a Destroyer ramming me!!!!!!!!!!!! :damn: :damn: Visibility was about 3-5 km and my watch crew haven’t even seen it at a few meters away from us!!!!!!! So U-21 went down with all hands:dead:
2. The Valetta Effect:nope:
It must have been early 1942 when I decided to raid the Valetta harbour. So I took my VIIC very close to the harbour (around 20km from it) and submerged at periscope depth and silent running. There were a lot of Armed Trawlers and Destroyers around but I’ve managed to pass through their defences and enter the vicinity of the harbour. Once close I’ve unleashed hell by sinking a Destroyer, two Troop Transports, a Tanker and a Merchant. I was pretty pleased with my performance and assured of my getaway. Unfortunately the Destroyers patrolling outside the harbour had a different opinion and the means to enforce it. All four of them came close and started ping me like mad. It was about 3:00 in the morning so quite dark but as they were throwing their Depth Charges I was confined inside the harbour. They were attacking me for more than 3 hours, inflicting quite a serious damage to the hull and the instruments of the boat. At first light I knew the game was up. With hull integrity of about 20%, most of the diesel and electric motors damaged or destroyed and almost no hydrophones left, there was one solution left. Try to break off the blockade. Because of my position inside the harbour I had to use reverse to get out but the adrenaline was running high so I gave the order. The boat having about 1 meter below keel started moving towards the harbour exit and the looming Destroyers. A barrage of Depth Charges followed, while I was moving my boat around to make the run for deep waters and safety. Destroyer after Destroyer was passing above us dropping their deadly cargo. Some of the Charges were thrown a bit far away but most of them were direct hits. U-101 met his end inside the Valetta harbour with all 51 hands.:dead: :dead:

I wonder why there where no shell splashes around your boat. Did they open fire on you after being rammed by them?

Actually, the US was involved with and had incidents with U-boats before Pearl Harbor.

I am still trying to pass the exam. This is how the torpedo exam has been for me.
Take one: I spent hours maneuvering my sub in the right position. When I finally managed to fire, I noticed I was too close so I backed and repositioned. At that moment my wife came in and I wanted to impress her so I fired several torpedoes to the largest tanker. We waited… nothing. After she left again I noticed I had fired in the wrong direction. I had my rear to the ship. I fired again and it bounced off the ship. The others were by now long gone.
Take two: This time I managed to sink the largest ship. But when I tried to find the other ships, they were lost in the vast ocean. I searched for days and days the whole area without ever finding any ship.
Take three: I managed to cripple the large ship. And after having read on the forum the best to attack the other, I managed to sink the rest of them. When the last ship went down I plotted a course to the crippled ship and started time compression. Suddenly I collided with the sinking ship and the whole crew went down.
If this was in real life I would probably NOT get a fourth try. On the other hand I would probably NOT have applied for a career as a sub captain either.
To be continued...

Are you playing with 100% realism. If you are, well then you're doing great, if you aren't and have automatic TDC and everything then I believen even Bernard himself would hit those ships better them you. But again, depends on the ammount of realism you're using!

One of my really "bloody hell!!" moments: I was going through Gibraltar ON THE SURFACE!!!!!!! (brave, but stupid). It was night (No, I aint THAT stupid:smug: ) and was constantly ready for any attack, although it came like a chock when a DD showed up on the right just about 100 meters away, I discovered him just when he started to hammer me.....but I lived to tell the tale, which is quite strange innit?
Bernard on guardduty I think....:nope:

Saturday night I was skulking around and stole into Southampton Harbour on a moonless night. Spent several hours eyeballing all the targets before I opted to down a berthed passenger liner (22422t), a Black Swan Frigate and a large tanker. So I'm sneaking out of the harbour feeling very smugly with myself, even phoned a buddy of mine back home in Australia to tell him.
Back at the dock the crowds erupt with euphoria, inside HQ it's gold oak leaves with swords and clusters, medals all round for the crew and a great time to look back at the first nine patrols and to see my name at the top of the tonnage list.:D
20 minutes later, nothing. My entire system failed to boot up. Raced off to the tech on Sunday to discover my motherboard is fried.
"Save my data".
Tech's put the game development of Deep Six onto a DVD for me but alas, with the impending business trip, my PC is gonna have to wait till I get back.
For all intense purposes, I have been removed from sub service and my history erased.
On a lighter note, Mrs Pioneer reports that such actions were not uncommon for those members that eventually went into the spy service. :yep:
