How many here play Dead is Dead? At first I said no way! I even reloaded in my early patrols when I first got the game a few weeks back. But now as I play and have learned to play I feel that DiD may not be such a bad idea. The times I reloaded were on my 1st and 3rd patrols when I was still learning. Now that I have a good grasp on the game I think I would like to see how far I can go. I am on my 11th patrol and my crew and I are in good health and spirits

Ive started playing that way. It can be frustrating but it also adds another element of tension to the game. Currently Im on my 3rd career with NYGM and have yet to make it out of 1942.

I think you're right, when learning the in's & out's of this game I always reloaded to learn from my mistakes.

Now, though, I'm on my 6th career and I play dead is dead.

I rarely start from the beginning of the war though, usually mid '41 or early '42, just enough time to get enough renown from the 'Happy Times' to see me though.

Absolutely. It makes it so that your decisions truly are "life or death" and you find yourself not being as cavalier as you would otherwise. Plus it helps keep the game fresh because when you die, it gives you the opportunity start a new career and try out a new flotilla or boat type.

I'm on my 7th patrol (really my 6th, since I milk-cowed once) in my VIIB in August of '41 and they assigned me to patrol the grid right at the mouth of the Bristol Channel. :o I'm playing conservative...staying submerged during the day, recharging at night, etc, but I'm fully expecting to never make it back from this patrol. So playing DiD makes it much more....tense.

I'll restart for Time Compression forced deaths, but otherwise I try for DiD :)

If one of my guys dies, he stays dead. However, I have concurrent careers running out of every available flotilla. If one dies, he is replaced by a new career in that same flotilla at the same time, so the war goes on.

Likewise. If "I" die in say December 1942, then I simply start a new career in the same Flotilla, using the same boat type, beginning January 1943.

I have not played DiD yet because I want to see the better boats and how the game progresses. One does have to admit that you need a good imagination for this game because basically it is not scripted. Sure, you are assigned a grid but above and beyond that, you are free to let your imagination run wild. Play DiD just extends your imagination just a bit further:up:. So after I test driver all the tubs available, I will play DiD.

imagination is totally needed for the campaign and I have no problem with that :) I like the idea of starting a new career after you die with your old one. That way your new captain can remember the loss of your last captain.

I hate those.

I play DiD unless I'm experimenting with new things and intentionally are trying them out, or in cases like my cat helpfully jumping on the keyboard and hitting "E" whilst I'm trying to evade circling DDs who're after my butt, or when my pc crashes (nothing like hitting "C" 14 times in a row and the keyboard is locked and doesn't respond).

To me DiD simply adds to the thrill, excitement (sheer terror at times :p ) and realism. On the other hand, I'll never denigrate anyone that simply loads and starts over again.

DiD? Lets put it this way, i used to list all the boats i lost in my signiture space. Unfortunatly the number of characters involved to list said boats now exceeds the character allotment of a signiture.

When I die it's mostly the cause of an error of mine so I let it be this way and try to do better next time. So I never reload a "finished" career.

I agree, and have learned to embrace DiD. I am ashamed to admit that when I started in my first little IIA, and was learning the whole plot solution thing, I would get position on my targets and then. . . save before firing. I know . . I know. :nope:
Dont tell anyone.

I always have and always will. Anything else seems like cheating to me. My prefered realism setting has varied, but my Dead-is-Dead preference has never changed.

I start in '39 and work my way through the conflict. The farthest I've ever gotten is early January 1942.

I must be very lucky. I usually start early '39 too (good ol' type II's :D ) and usually make it to middle '44.

I play DiD unless the "death" is due to something silly like running into another ship at time compression while Im in the bathroom.

It also can take me weeks of real time to fully complete a patrol as I only get a few hours a couple of nights a week (shrug).

FWIW

Time to come clean. I do this too on big juicy targets. Is there a 12 step program for this? ;)

DID no matter what.

Even if it is TC. There are minefields in some areas we operate. And collisions did sink a number of boats. Many U-Boats were sunk with no idea how and TC DID represents those to me.

100% GW with some NYGM much harder sensors and 2 to 3 times the convoy escorts etc etc.

I really try and be in the real Kaleun situation but that is the how I believe it was situation and you may see that different (WUZ!!:rotfl: )

I now almost always start in 1943 because it is more intense. I have made it to the end one time although I am on patrol 11 now mid 1944 with a likely transfer to Bergen soon. I have been here before only for my relatives to get that tele about my death!

Name any real Kaleun that could press reset!

I play DiD in my WaW campaign. Of course, I still save during the patrols, in case the game crashes, which happens quite often.

Always DiD,no if,ands,or buts about it.If I die its for good no matter what the circumstances are that caused it.

Ive recently started playing DiD. Still on my first carrier using it. My own wierd little requirment is i have to start right from the beginning with a IIA. I dont really know why but it just seems wrong to me to start at any other time. Anyway thats why ive not died yet. Early 41 at the moment.

I play DiD. I do save before and after sinkings but only ever use the last save unless someone else using the PC has screwed with where I am. (Unfortunate side effect of having teenaged children).

To me, DiD is how the game's meant to be played... on my only major campaign so far, I started Sept 39 and sub was destroyed by depth charging Dec 41... after I had meticulously tracked, engaged, broke off, tracked and re-engaged a convoy... made a mistake in that destroyers saw my periscope while I was making an attack run and they got hold of me... big disappointment but I wouldn't have it any other way. Basically if you know that you can just reload if you fail, you get very careless and do very unrealistic stuff. However when you're playing DiD and evading destroyer DCs you get an adrenaline rush every time one goes off!

Wow either way.

My own wierd little requirment is i have to start right from the beginning with a IIA. I dont really know why but it just seems wrong to me to start at any other time.Ditto. It feels like cheating for some reason, even if it is to play in the Mediterranean. If I try to start in the Med' in '41, it doesn't feel like a "real" career and I just can't immerse myself in it:-?.

Name any real Kaleun that could press reset! They tended to play dead-is-dead, yes.

Now as 1942 comes closer in WaW I fear even more. Now its all about survival....I do not play SHIII out of WaW anymore, its the only thing that keeps me motivated...along with new mods.
