It was a dark and stormy night in 1940. Well, actually it wasn't stormy, there was no wind. But it was very dark. Anyway, I was attacking a convoy headed for the Irish sea and fired a salvo at a c3. All three torpedoes hit, and it turned out that i had destroyed a "neutral unit". What is that supposed to mean? I assume it must have been an american ship, but so what? It was a part of a convoy belonging to Die verdammte Engländer

Convoys don't belong to countries, ships do. ;)

Been there, done that. My best patrol until now was ruined for sinking a "neutral", I had to "resign" my command of the U-46, a beatiful VIIB

You can sink anything you want if you don't mind losing renown. :88)

If you blow up a hospital ship, it's like negative 10,000 or something like that and Hitler personally gets to pull your pants down on that one. :arrgh!:

What's the point of a naval blocade if it can be broken by using ships flying the flags of "neutral" countries? Flags that in any case can't be seen at night... That was certainly not the german policy in WW2 (or in WW1 when the "neutral" Norwegian merchant fleet was decimated)

One has to understand that Hiltler directed certain things as to not bring in other countries into the war. Hilter named the time and the place to start a war with countries other than Poland, Britian, France. Neutrals being sunk was frowned on in Berlin so I guess the game gives you negative renown. Neutrals went in the convoys also, the Americans would patrol/escort to a certain latitude off the coast of the US eventhough we were not in the war yet. Putting in neutrals and getting bad press(less renown) is a great idea that was put into the game. GW took it further and now you get message with who you can sink and what date. Also, they have a book of flags in the UZO/periscope view with dates the neutrals became fair game.

Bad luck some would say. But forget the renown. If the loss is too big, then reload. If not, you'll have extra tonnage added!

On the subject of flags, does anyone know what this is.. 3 horizontal bands of equal size, Top = light blue Middle = white Bottom = light blue

It was not in the UZO Flag section and I was in two minds whether to sink it or not ?!

Either the Kriegsmarine signal flag (http://www.kbismarck.com/flags1.gif) for Ludwig used on the Bismarck (unlikely!) or the Nicaragua, El Salvador or Honduras flags perhaps? They were similar to that, blue/white/blue but each had a symbol in the middle.

That's the Argentine flag. Neutral, don't you dare:mad:

To be more accurate, it should have a yellow sun in the middle.

I'm always very careful about targetting ships, and visually flag-verify any before firing on them. I do agree that it seems a bit deceptive and 'cheating' to have neutral ships in an 'enemy' convoy, although I think it's worse when you find enemy ships in a 'neutral' convoy.

Regardless, I've never fired upon passenger liners whatever their nationality (my personal feeling is that they're non-combatants, and unless I was to have particular intel on a specific ship --like the Germans did with the Lusitania-- I do not engage them) nor would I fire upon hospital ships.

That's just me however.

I remember spotting a convoy led by a neutral ship and thus marked as neutral on the map. Then when I reached it, it consisted of 99,99% enemy ships:damn:.

I've just sunk a Passenger Liner, heading east, on July 17,'43 at 04:20 flying the British flag. I considered her to be carrying troops. Impressive seeing that one sink after hitting her with only 2 torpedos. And I took a pounding from the Brit escorts for it too.

This is the first passenger liner I've seen in any convoy so far.
First torpedo hit in the bow, second hit mid ship in fuel bunkers.

Must say, that was a nice hit.

It really only needed two torps to go down?

Wow, so you really only needed ONE fish. Not too shabby! Impact or magnetic pistol?

I sunk the one in front of the Statue of Liberty with one well placed (easy since it was stationary) impact pistol torp right in the fuel bunker. It made such pretty fireworks. :D

What's the point of a naval blocade if it can be broken by using ships flying the flags of "neutral" countries?

It's a good bet everybody in the Kreigsmarine at the time was thinking the same thing.

Imagine their enthusiasm for giving us yankee's are up in comings once we "offically" entered the war. Personnaly i find our usage of our "netural" status at the time grossly exploited. Apparently we even had destroyers escorting convoys while we were "netural" as well.

Lately I've been using only magnetic pistol for all torpedos fired. Seems to work better than impact and less torps bouncing off hulls. Because of a ship that size I used AOB of 90 degrees and got in close. I used 2 T-III topredos set at 6 meters. Spread was fairly close together. 1st T-III hit the bow and the 2nd hit mid ship. I was worried she wasn't going down so I fired my last torp.... a T-IV. That was a waste. Just after I fired it off we got the mssg "Enemy Destroyed".

Now diving to 120meters at 1kt and "Silent" as 2 Flower Corvettes are looking for us. They must be pissed for some reason. LOL We're right between the 2 at 2000 meters distant, so their sonar is screwed. Hopefully we'll slip out the backdoor before the sun gets any higher.... it's 04:59 on a calm North Atlantic sea. But I do wish we had rough seas to help us hide better.

Silghtly OT:
You may think that it was unfair, but I'm thankful for that! If the US hadn't done that the war might have lastet longer. But you would have joined the war anyway because Hitler had to attack the US as well. One would think he learned from WWI!:p
