I use SH3 Commander and noticed on the crew screen that it said I should replace my sr.lt. soon so he can command his own boat. Realisticly I imagine this would be the thing to do as good U-Boat skippers where needed. Of course I don't want to becuase he has max resiliancy and alot of medals. He can go days without getting tired too. Do you guys replace your sr. officers and enlist a green sub-lt or do you keep a experienced officer as long as you want?

I find that green officers get fatigued very fast? Add's a challenge i spose. But it seems it takes forever to get a officer promoted in the game.

Thanks.

I just let my Chief Engineer go for that exact same reason, on SH3 Commander's recommendation. Repair and torpedoman qualifications, Knights Cross Second and first class....man, he saved my bacon on more than one occasion. I figure its more realistic to let him go to commander school.

Hell no!

You paid to get them trained and geared up for YOUR boat. They can command, when I'm dead :-?

Meaning: NEVER!!! :nope:

Well, I would do the same, but they don't go to U-Boat School. They don't get their own boat, and they don't partake in the war effort, which brings up the AI commanded boats issue. It would be nice to see someone promoted get a boat, and see their progress, or even hear about them being lost at sea. That would be a nice addition, as the moral, even your own can be affected if the guy is lost on a patrol.

They get their own boat as soon as BdU assigns them one and not a day sooner! :)

right on guys! lol....good call. I am going to keep my first officer then. If the AI actually did something with him then that is one thing, but if you dismiss him and there is no real effect on the game what's the point. I created a backstory that he punch out a party official and the only reason he is not in the brig is that I requested him on my boat. But his chances of getting his own boat are nil. :)

You have to understand that the crews became brothers because they depended on each other. If one was remiss in his duty the boat could go down with all hands. With that said, this common bond ran deeper than just a brothers in arms type deal. To loose an officer/crew was always a bad deal(unless he sucked...Werner had one removed from his boat because he could not keep trim, he was noob and Werner lost one of his best men). So, I keep my guys that I have developed after each patrol. They have more renown and I do not have to spend time micromanaging a new crew member.

I've just started using SH3 Commander in addition to GW1.1a, so I haven't encountered that message before. I'm of two minds about it.

I play SHIII to play, of course. To relax, and enjoy myself with a simulation game. I've always enjoyed submarines, ever since I was a wee lad (even if the damned Brits did their best to scare that out of me; I'll explain below) and was ecstatic to discover Silent Hunter (discovering all the excellent mods, and this site, required undie changes ;) ).

But one of the major reasons I enjoy SHIII as much as I do is because it is much much more than just an 'arcade' blow-'em-up game. Yes, I have a blast targeting, firing and sinking ships. But the simulation-immersion of the game makes that feel much more satisfying, makes it feel much more like a major accomplishment.

It's the simulation and immersion aspects that attract me to the degree that it does. Give me 'realism' over pretty graphics and snazzy effects any day (although having pretty graphics and snazzy effects with realism is fine, yes yes yes :D ).

I curse every stinking time I'm trying to target a ship after a long yet perfect flank run and approach, only to have to deal with 15M winds and swells from Hell that have my 'scope rolling up and down like a rollercoaster, especially when I'm running 100% realism and have to manually measure range and speed. Yet curse as I do, at the same time I keep thinking what it must have been like for real, and having to deal with the up-and-down, side-to-side rock and roll. Possibly sweating and worrying about breaching and being detected by an escort.

It's real, yanno?

And it's just as real to have your exec promoted and moved on to command his own boat. That is how it works, after all. And yes, while that leaves you, as Captain, with a less-experienced XO (or other officer), how else do new officers gain experience? How else do newly-commisioned boats gain experienced Captains?

So I'll probably wind up, if I last that long :p , letting my officers go when they've advanced enough to be moved on.

Oh, and about what happened when I was a kid:

I live in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. We have a pretty big harbor there and, time to time, visiting ships from other nations will have 'open-house'. I was around 6, my brother was 5, when a British diesel submarine docked and had tours. Not to any of the interesting parts, darrnit; no command room, or conning tower, or torpedo rooms. You entered from the aft deck down, went through the stern quarters and engine rooms, then back up and out.

So, there we were: Mom and Dad, brother and I. Have you ever been in a diesel sub before? They ain't what I'd call roomy, nopers. We'd just entered the diesel engine room . . . when they fired up the engines.

Try and picture two of the biggest damned truck engines you've ever seen, crammed in a closet.

Now picture them blasting off . . . sans muffler.

Now picture two adults and two kids trying to teleport at the same time through a bulkhead door.

At the same time.

I've tried to replace My senior staff, but they always turn down the opportunity, wanting to stay with their current kaleun.:rotfl::rotfl::rock::rotfl::rotfl:

Dont pay any attention to SH3 Commander... It'll have you transfering your officers away as soon as they become anywhere near competent

I say keep them till they die... or at least keep them for five or six missions and then will see.

oh, I'm sorry... your transfer papers didn't come through. Don't worry, you can stay with me till you get another oportunity *evil smile*

I agree with that. You could stand on the bridge and yell "Das is Thomson....." or whoever your dismissed officer is as he sails by in his new boot.

You could have your own little privately trained wolfpack......

Commander asked me to hand my boat over to my IWO, and retire. No way, I ignored it and went on, only to get sent to Iceland and back (all our last 7 patrols were off the west coast of Africa), that'll learn me. At least they are all well decorated and qualified, that'll be tested by the TF I've just run into, resplendant with Fleet Carrier.

You're asked to let your best people go - but there is always the other side of the coin.

All armies & navies throughout time have had people who were F*&k-ups.

Mostly, you couldn't just fire them, but you could try to post them on to another unit so some other poor sod has to put up with them.

A very funny guy called Spike Milligan wrote a full account of his war-time experiences in the British Army.

He said some of these poor souls spent the entire war being posted from one unit to another - one guy gave his address as the back of a lorry (truck).

If you managed to get rid of Bernard, good luck! - but remember, in return you get some-one else's F*&k-up.

There is not real advantage to letting them go other than the "historical immersion" argument so keep em till you or they die!

I play 94% realism so am in it for realism and immersion, if one of my fine officers can take a command or is needed on another boat then I let them go for that advancement opportunity, the Fuerer has given Doenetz authority to start mass producing U-Boats after Prien's sinking of that battleship in Scapa Flow, so they will need experienced officers.
