What is the deepest you've been to and still got back home alive?

I made 420m and got back with only 25% hull integrity last night. No DC or shell damage only pressure!:dead:

Most likely diving with a IX D2 and coming up with a IIA...;)

This was in a VIIC running with GW1.1a I've also gotten deeper in the same class (445m) but got crushed completely.

How do you set depths over 260m? The depth meter won't let me!

Just press D for normal dive

The 'A' key will level you out and keep the current depth as it shows when you hit the 'A' key.

D and A, ok got it. Will try to brake his record now...

IIRC - Don't go below 500m as I think the game stops rendering graphics at that point. You'll be able to rise again but I think your sub will be invisible.

i managed 440m in a 7c42 without taking any damage, although i do have sh3 commander which i think alters/randomises the crush depths. the only way i could get that deep though was to dive to 300 and simply stop my motors and sink slowly, for some reason the game wouldnt let me dive deeper than 300m.

Well thats not so bad, invisible boat... :hmm:

so far, only 340m:oops: I just kept on sinking by running 3knts in silent mode, couldn't level it up; why is that? Is sub too heavy to stay levelled at that speed?

Sounds like you were suffering from the Crash Dive Blues, a stock SH3 bug.

What happens is that if you declare a crash dive but try to change depth to something else before leveling off from your crash dive your boat will be resting at an angle, stern up. This means that while being "level" you're actually facing down and will sink.

The fix for this is to go above crash dive level (20-70m or so usually) and crash dive again letting it finish. That will level you out and you'll be able to maintain depth even as slow as 1kt or so again (depending on damage of course).

thanks for the tip, but....I'm using GW:hmm:

Crash diving isnt the only thing that causes a slow doward drift or inablity to maintain depth at extreme depths. I'm not entirely sure, but I think its something to do with a natural flood rate between the different types of uboats, and at what depth your at.

If memory serves me correctly, you can illustrate this for yourself by taking a type 7 toextreme depth like 275 meters, and just stop the motors. Do the same with a type 9, what you might see is that the type 9 will have a harder time maintaining depth over time. It will slowly creep downards and you'll have to increase speed in order to maintain depth. Ive only noticed this behavior with extreme depths on a type 9 however. Type 7 seems to maintains depth perfectly.

New record XXI GW mod bottomed out at 750m without taking damage! I did blow ballast and return to the surface in one piece and with a fully visible sub.

Use Timetravelers Crush Depth mod, and you can set the depth closer to actual settings for the boats. I use it with GW 1.1 with no adverse issues. You can also set the range your boat can go based on actual figures that are included.

How is that possible? You didn't take any damage at all? What is your U-boat made out of?

What is the deepest the enemy can hit a sub with depth charges? Is there a maximum level in this sim that they explode?

My pet peeve.

300 meters.

At the 300 meter mark, depth charges will POOF, without so much as an explosion. Maybe 305 metrers tops, but they'll still POOF into thin air. Ive often tried to change that, with no results. Ive acutally watched what would have been direct hits disappear before they hit the uboat while testing. So if your below 300 meters, your effectivly immune from countermeasures, excepting maybe hedge hogs.

Iv'e been down to 495m in a IXD2 but had to edit a file can't remember which one but it had adverse affects on my sub so I had to put it back to the original settings.

Every time I have tried to go below 175 meters, I have been crushed when I use GW and SH3CMDR. This has occured with 100% hull integrity. I guess I have been unlucky.

Well my wife left me and daughter says she dont want to see me anymore. Then my dog died in hunger when I didnt remember to feed him. So I quess I have gone quite deep with this playing, but hopefully will get back (someday) ?

Ode to slow crush depth modding.

You can slow down the rate at which your sub looses hull integrity so you can dip below crush depth for limited times, but you'll slowly bleed H.I if you do.

Here's an intresting scenario that happened to me the other day in a single mission. Got pummeled by close depth charges while trying to go deep. Major flooding throughout the boat, bow and stern, but particuarlly the bow. H.I was about 60%, and boat was sinking, but i thought it was controllable, and i did get the flooding under control. And was BARELY able to maintain depth at about 120 meters, and this only by going to flank speed and putting the planes on full rise.

Thats when the 2nd barrage hit. major flooding all over again, and the boat started to dip by the bow and go deeper. Much deeper. Fighting to get the flooding udner control i noticed i was at a really steep down angle, and still sinking fast, thats when i tossed in the towel and started to emergency blow the ballast tanks. Boat was still dropping fast. Thats when i discovered that the 2nd barrage had DESTROYED the bow planes. STill being at flank speed did not help my prediciment. Eventually the depth meter pegged, and the only thing i could think of was, the voice of the cheif in das boat saying, "we've lost control". All the while the effects of the pressure could be seen and felt. Bursting glass, the lights flickering and the control room going dark on and off intermittedly.

Not willing to give up yet, i looked around and noticed still have the stern planes and an aft that was not heavy. I put the boat into emergecy reverse and blew what air i had left in the ballast tanks. Somewhere at 340 meters, she slowed down and hearing the voice from the cheif in das boat again, "She's risiing!".

So there i was, in full reverse, going backwards, to the surface. all the while the destroyers sending more depth charges causing more flooding. At about 40 meters, it looked like i might break surface, but alas, the next barrage destoryed me. Never got back to the surface, but i got pretty damn close.

How would you slow down the crush damage?
I hope that by doing that I can bottom out right next to the ice wall in the far north. Over 1000 meters est 1200-1500m either way one hell of a goal
