It really depends what you are going for. Right now I'm going for 47% realism. It will take me a lot of practice to get torpedo firing solutions manually, so in the meantime I still automate that but give myself limited fuel/batteries, and realistic sensors/damage.
If you are just starting out I'd suggest doing the Naval Academy Missions with the tutorials and check out this thread: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=96026
I started at 56% which made it challenging but still easy enough to get a handle on what the controls were. I was already familiar with SH and SH2 at 100% so I kind of knew what to expect from turning on or off the realism controls.
The beauty of this game is you can set/change the realism for each mission of the campaign before you start it so have a play around until you find a comfortable mix.
Just be aware some of the realism settings will have an definite impact on gameplay so don't go in heavy handed and start out at 100%.

Yes, do the schools, especially the torpedos school. Use the outside view and watch what the torpedos act and note how the AOB, distance and speed are showing. This will help you visualize what the torpedos do and how they work. After watching this for a while you can start to visualize your attacks in your head while at the periscope or UZO. I always attempt to be at a 90 degree angle to my victim and within 2000m. Keep those two things close at heart and you will be successful.

i started off with everything selected apart from manual contact uopdate and manual torpedo solutions, as a guy who had no knowledge of sims whatsoever i found these settings quite newbie friendly.
although i have to say its much more satisfiying to play at 100% and really gives that adreniline rush when you make that perfect shot.

speaking of realism, was starting a mission ( mid 1944 Grey Wolves ) last night, did some test once in deep water and two things happened: no flamk speed, and batteries were sabatoged.I had taken for granted doing tests early in patrol, but am glad I did last night. Sucked that I had to end, but the previous patrol I had over 30,000 tons, so I want to continue with U-752.
SH Commander certainly adds realism, along with the other great mods out there.

many tx guys happy hunting.
and batteries were sabatoged.
WOW, is that also possible? I play at modest 85%, can I expect that later in the game also?

If you don't grasp the theory behind the tageting solution process, having the computer do it for you will never lead you anywhere. You'll just watch and scratch your head and remain as confused as ever.
There's no easy fix, you need to study up on some basic theoretical concepts to really understand the why of things.
Of course, this shouldn't be an issue because the game's manual should cover all this, but ... well, we all know the score on that one.
Start by reading the wiki manual, Wazoo' tutorial or even try some of my links. It's not that hard once you know how things work.:yep:
Here is a very very rough visual guide

This should be right and is based off of what worked for me.
