Heh, I had a plastic aircraft carrier with an engine once. As a matter of fact, I still have it, it's decorating my bedroom up in my cabin.

It wasn't remote-controlled, though, nor could it fire or launch any of her little one-centimetre long plastic aircraft.

Just wondering- how do those guns shoot ?

Something like air soft guns ? Compressed air ?
And do they have automatic reloads or one-shot only ?

Is it possible to buy something like this ? Or need to build it yourself ?

Gun ammo:In the early days of the club, ships' guns were powered by freon gas - a somewhat unstable and messy propellant. Since California was soon to ban freon altogether, the club began to experiement with compressed air, eventually stripping down 12 volt emergency tire inflators, and installing these in their ships. This worked well, but eventually, onboard air compressors were replaced with CO2 gas, which has become the standard for the hobby.

That the ships actually do sink each others is just awesome. Thought it's got to be a bit depressing to watch your pride and joy slip beneath the waves after a match where the odds went against you.

If I remember right they use 50 rounds per gun if room permits. Also on some of those ships you may have noticed streams of water spraying up, they install water pumps inside them to try and keep them floating while getting pumped full of holes. There's some groups not far from me that did this stuff for a while, they build models, mount the electronics, pumps, and guns, then head out to the pond and fight! They would stay in the shallow water so after a ship is sunk they could wade in the water and pick it up after the round is over. Usually took two rounds or more before any ships were sunk, between rounds you could reload but no patch jobs allowed. Also there were a lot of limits as gentlemen to agree not to go faster than a set speed and to not equip their ships with full auto guns or something like that.

I would love to join a model aircraft club and fly over with my model STuka or model B-17 and totally bust up that party! That would be so much fun.

Hoe about putting a Radio Controlled XXI in that pond, with (exploding) torps and the whole sha-bang? That would make a real mess!:rock:

They even use a cut down version of the main guns to replicate torpedo's.

When you start out you start as a merchant (unarmed) and try and avoid being sunk (good luck!:D) Then you work your way throught destoryers, cruiser and then battleships. I believe they even have aircraft carriers! (don't know if their armed or not) Diffrent sized guns get different size ball bearings, so damage is to scale ( no destroyer outgunning a battleship!)

They even do hypothethical battles with ships that were planned but never built. The least popular job is the guy who has to go fetch the sunken ships!!!

you think they can re-use the the ships that goes under? In that case, I'd sure be happy to do that oneday, but not if I had to built a new bleedin ship every time you meet the Rodney, or Hood, or Bismarck or whatever...:p

its indeed a funny sight to see , love the moment when you see one boat stuck and the BB is giving that boat hell with his deck guns :rotfl:

They have been doing this "sport" for a long long time.

I remember first seeing it when I was involved with radio controlled aircraft. Probably about 10 years ago.

I have to admit though they have increased the level of sophistication considerably.

In the early days they looked more like cigar boxes than ships.

The electronics are housed within a waterproof / "bullet" proof box. So the hull of the ship is just... well ... a hull. When the ship does sink they just pull it up fix the holes and go back at it again.

At some point the hull is more glue than wood and is considered "unfit" for play and has to be replaced :p

The "guns" are powerd by compressed air and are basically miniature BB guns.

I suck at doing that kinda stuff, building ships and doing the model thing just doesnt work for me. It's a neat little hobby, but I'll have to pass. I dont enjoy building little ships and stuff like that. I've put together a couple of motorcycles though! That was better, at least I could ride it around once I was done!

:up: Well, I used to repair Scooters , fun stuff thought especialy the time you can spend on them. love to work with my hands.

but moddeling is also something I like to do.
