View Full Version : Can someone make me SH3 sig?

Respenus
10-03-06, 08:52 AM
I really don't have a habit of asking people for favours, but my usual forum sig maker(s) don't really play SH3 and I want really one :yep:

So all I'm asking is for the sig to have my name and to have a type XXI.

Every other decoration is up to you, if you have the time.

I thank in advance all who will even consider making me a sig!

*uses the bowing smily*

Plain, but I'm sleepy:

I got a PSD of that if you wanted to change the fonts/colors/placement whatever.

Thank you anyway!

That's a good sig by Kylania.
But for your info 420x120px is the forum standard. There is a big thread hereabouts where Gizzmoe is trying to get everyone into line.

I will when I get time(at work at the mo) make one for you from ingame. Idea:leaving port, with watch crew on deck, with a bit of scenery in the background. Yes or No?

I think by "longer" he meant "it sucks" instead of "it should be wider". ;)

Oh, I think that's a bit extreme. I'd go with "It's not exactly what I was looking for".

But I agree, you've been dissed, dude.:rotfl:

I didn't mean it suck, I wanted to say, I'll wait if anyone will come along with a better one. If not, I'd be perfectly happy using yours :yep:

What is your fav IX boat/skin scheme? Am I correct in thinking that you prefer the caribbean/gulf of mexico for hunting?

Ive gotten more days at sea in the caribean then i care to admit. So any uboat i skipper is at sea for a good long awhile. Usualy around 70 to 80 days per patrol on the average. Ive also had a few patrols near capetown in the GR grids that were as long as 140 days. Makes for a rusty boat ;) Usually an IXC.

danlisa
10-05-06, 03:56 AM
I shall make a start then. Rusty:hmm:, I feel a new skin coming on. Capetown:hmm: This could prove interesting.

I'll just give some samples of my work in case anyone would like something..

Now I dont use in game screenshots..they are so..well..blah!!

These are sigs I have done for others as well as myself..and some that I just did to have templates to simply add a name to if someone likes it.

Many are not to this forums size limits as they were not made for here.I will give links so it is less pic intensive.

Final Fantasy Sig (http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/6645/finalfantasyie8.gif)

Are most of the backgrounds from the render: difference clouds in PS. I love that effect. My fav is the Klingon sig, I'm a bit of a trekkie.

Is the boat in your sig not from in game?

I welcome the diversity of sigs as the forums will get boring very quickly if eveyone had in game shots. Only so much you can get while playing.

The sigs backgrounds are made using a variety of Brushes,Filters,Effects etc..I begin with a black and white simple cloud layer and go from there.Usually end up with around 10-16 layers per sig depending on what effects I want.

To give an idea..the Final Fantasy sig I start with as stated above a black and white simple cloud layer and this image..
http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/9885/ff11humef0qq1.jpg

Then went from there with brushes, effects and different filters. As well as using custom shape tool for the final fantasy sig.The background half circles you see are actually a Copyright symbol from the custom shapes tool.

As for the Uboat in my sig, that is a pic of a Revell Uboat model and not an in game sub shot.

The Final Fantasy and Master Chief from Halo are my 2 newest I just did yesterday.I have really refined my sigs to get better background looks to them compared to my earlier sigs like my SH3 sig.

If you want to have some fun, try thinking up a sig for me! If you can encorporate a bookworm into the sig with a slogan of your choice.

I'll choose a winner if there is more than 1 offered to me. There will be honourable mentions for any exceptional runner ups

No prize except the joy of knowing your creation will be displayed everywhere I post.

My swimmer is getting tired. All types of sig will be considered, sub's, ship, flags, logos, mascots (think American battle flags for world war 2 subs), humor based, Bernard.... No scratch the last one...

I'll give a time frame of three weeks so there is plenty of time (we all have other lives, and like me, you want to play the game now and then!)

You should be ashamed to even think about such a question, yet alone post it. That one represents clearly the best one. And it's a "Das Boot" reminder!

And to any moderator here: Do ake this thread a sticky, as my guts tell me there will be alot more work that needs to be done, so... It's only logical!

Oh, and just btw. Marhk, you may not recognize me, as I've went through a few namechanges while you were away...

CV-707 / Vesikko ---> CV-707 ---> Banned...

and then

ChokerSandwich ---> Brewster Pilot ---> Sir Big Jugs...

And you, Marhk, were the starter of it all lol. Looongg time ago I saw a thread where you asked Neal to change your username from marhkimov to Marhkimov, and that's when I understood that a name change WAS possible here!

Welcome back to the madhouse...

If you can resize them to fit together you will get a better image quality. I can notice the pixalation from enlarging the picture.

Was this your first attempt? What picture editing software do you use?

I'll be willing to give you(or anyone) some pointers, as I know it can be quite difficult to achieve what you can imagine.:yep:

Lessee . . . my first attempt, yes. And I used Paint, as that's the only picture editing software I have. It wasn't easy trying to resize the originals down, add them to a single file and add the text, either. At least not with Paint. --wry grin--

@ Albrecht Von Hesse

I can understand problems you encountered with MS Paint, it a very limited program.

Have a google for freeware image editors there is a good choice around. A program called Gimp is a good start, it's a bit clumsy to start with but has good tutorial backup and a much more comprehensive set of tools and options.

I look forward to seeing more sigs from you.:D

N.b If you have the originals I could resize/edit them for you or you could keep at it for yourself.

@ Sir Big Jugs
Have you been playing with the clouds render out of PS? It's a cool effect. Could maybe do with a bit of colour though. But, your sig = your choice. N.B IIRC if you make your current sig a gif you could preserve the transparancy and loose the white border(I think).

Keep at it all:up:

Don't let this thread die, I enjoying it too much.

Sir Big Jugs
10-10-06, 05:06 PM
Danlisa, no, actually my sig is made with 100% freeware image manipulation program GIMP (GNU Image Manipulator Program). It is more difficult than Photoshop, but I love it. Do most of my work in GIMP, only the "finishing touches" sometimes in Photoshop.

BTW, I need urgent photoshop help...

Say I have an image like this:
http://brewsterpilot.googlepages.com/Untitled-1.jpg
what I want to do is to give it soft, smooth edges so it would look better when put in to my "old-paper" sig, and the corners wouldn't stick out, if you know what I mean.

If you can explain, please try, but if you'd rather just do it instead of writing long descriptions, I'd appreciate it very very much.

Thanks!

@ Sir Big Jugs

1) Open image in PS
2) Duplicate layer
3) Select Rectangular Marqee Tool
4) Change Feather to liking (5px works best with your image)
5) Create a selection which is 2-3 pixels inside the edge of your image
6) Goto Select>Inverse
7) Hit delete key 3-4 times

This should blend/curve your edges enough to put your layer into your sig.

Note, to preserve the transparency you must import the above image while in PS. Just drag and drop:up:

Failing that here's one I made earlier.:rotfl:

Just a thought.
Have you thought of maybe filling the background with blended thumbnails of some of the images you will link to? Something like a polaroid effect with images overlapped. This will give your text more definition aswell as providing a preview to people link to your images.:hmm:

I could PM you the effect that I'm thinking of if you like.

Sir Big Jugs
10-11-06, 02:25 PM
Yes, as a matter of fact I have been thinking of putting some previews in the sig.
Last night I stayed up a loong time trying to find a way to make it look good with the "old-paper" background, but nah, I don't think I will add it. I might edit the text to become a bit more specific though.

But here's for you, a special edition preview:

I would like to remind you that the maximum allowed size for a signature image is 400x120 pixels (please use JPG and GIF only, no PNG). Itīs ok if itīs a bit wider or a higher than that. The signature, including text, should not exceed a height of 150 pixels. Smaller signatures = less scrolling and faster loading times.

This is a 400x120 image:
http://home.arcor.de/gizzmoe/400x120.jpg

A signature, including text, shouldnīt be higher than this (150 pixels):

I had posted the link earlier. I think that 'some' people realize that there sig's are over size and trying to correct that.;)

I do realize that the one I've made for people recently have been 420x120. This was an error on my part, but does this come under the part where "it maybe slightly wider or higher than that..."?

Danlisa, Iīve noticed that the signatures you make are quite big in filesize. Yours is 71KB for example. That doesnīt sound much, but it takes about 15 seconds to load for 56k users. Please use a higher JPG compression. Iīve resaved your sig with Irfanview at 85% quality, it was then five times smaller than your current sig and there was no quality loss. The same for Albrechtīs sig: 65KB before, 15KB after.

danlisa
10-13-06, 08:36 AM
No problem, I'll repost everyone's sigs tonight at a reduced filesize. A question though, I use PS CS2 and when I save as JPG it offers a compression percentage (1-12) I always choose an approx value of 8. CS2 tells me that this will take a 56k user between 1-3 secs and a 512k user approx 0.25 secs. I 'm curious as to whether I should trust these figures if Infranview says different.

I will not argue that if you have a page with an average of 7 sigs at the current compression that a 56k user will have to wait a whopping 21 secs for the page to load. Plus we know how unrealiable dialup is, speed wise.

If I can correct the sigs I have released (and get people to use them) would you consider making this thread a sticky. This will promote correct use of sigs in arguably the most popular area of Subsim. Perhaps you could post your reminder on sig size on the first page.

I am always open to suggestions that will keep Subsim a viable resource for ALL users.

Gizzmoe
10-13-06, 09:10 AM
I use PS CS2 and when I save as JPG it offers a compression percentage (1-12) I always choose an approx value of 8.

Try a much lower value, or resave them with Irfanview, it has a very good JPG compression algorithm and itīs freeware for non-commercial use.

http://www.irfanview.net

CS2 tells me that this will take a 56k user between 1-3 secs and a 512k user approx 0.25 secs.
If a 56K user is lucky he has a transfer rate of 5.5KB/s, so thatīs 13 seconds for your signature. With ISDN about 9 seconds.

If I can correct the sigs I have released (and get people to use them) would you consider making this thread a sticky.

Ref: Gizzmoe making this thread sticky - he answered OK to me asking him to CONSIDER making this sticky. It will be dependant on whether I can get all sigs I made reduced in file size & the owners using them.;)

danlisa
10-13-06, 02:14 PM
As suggested by Gizzmoe, I have reduced the file size of all the sigs I have produced. Scaled from approx 78kb to approx 17kb.

If you would be kind enough to adopt these it will keep this thread 56k friendly.

Note, there is no image quality degredation.

Hi All,

I have been teaching myself animation and wanted to put some into my sigs.

However, I have hit an issue over the size (bytes) of these and wondered if anyone could offer any guidance in bringing the file size down.

This is my first tutorial effort and the image is approx 111kb...
<REMOVED>

After playing with the loss (approx 50%) I have got it down to 62kb, still too large, and the image quality is crap....
<REMOVED>

If I can reduce this enough I was planning on having animated storms/lightning in the background of some sigs.

Any help would be appreciated.
