Hi all.
Wondering what people's experiences are like vis a vis night visability. In my case, the screen is pitch black to the point I can't even make out my lookouts....There's no way I can possibly identify a merchant's nationality - in fact I can't even see them on-screen even when my crew sights them. :o
Is this normal? If so, how the hell are you supposed to navigate/attack? I had to leave port using the map as I couldn't see ANYTHING other than a few lights. :damn:
Running NYGM 2.2 if that makes a difference.
Comments appreciated!

I do not run that mod but possibly just adjusting you screen might do. I run GW and I cannot see the flags unless on sitting on top of the merchant. For the most part I would suspect you have a good chance of an Allied ship. In GW you can make out the ship and see your watchmen. Like I said, perhaps just a brightness change on you monitor will do.

I felt pretty stupid when I realized that increasing my screen's brightness was all it took:p.

It might just be your moitor brightness settings, then again it might not.
No matter what I did, I could not see a thing at night. It was pitch black, like the monitor was off!
Amazingly talented people here created light night mods, to help us with dark screens to see. But in my case, even that didn't help greatly. By this point, i'd given up with the night and usually just tc'd it.
Then I installed NYGM 2.2 and i could suddenly not only see my watch crew at 1am in the morning but also the sea we were sailing on and, best of all, i've even spotted a few ships on the horzon!
Dunno if it'll help in your case, but if you feel like it, give it a go! :)

Thanks for comments. As stated originally (not having a go at you!!), I AM running NYGM 2.2. My monitor IS a bit dark anyway, but I'm getting a new one delivered later this week:
Samsung 204B 20.1" LCD, black - 1600 x 1200, 5ms
Maybe that will help - even with a 3/4 moon showing I currently can see squat....!!

Ha, happens to us all! At least you can see the writing - if this were in SHIII I'd need a starshell just to see my own bow!!

SHIII is notoriously dark. hope your new monitor helps, because no, it isn't normal that you shouldn't see anything at all... well... I mean, with the way the game is done it's normal in the sense that it's a common experience for many players, but it wasn't supposed to be like that.

I've just developed a problem with black skys. It doesnt seem to matter if it's day or night, the sky is pitch black. Just the sun, moon and stars glowing, along with a little fog. :shifty:
Anybody else had this?

How old is your monitor. It may be as others have said, just a matter of turning up the brightness settings, but I have found my self that an older monitor's performance can degrade quite radically over time, and it's not until it's compared with a new one you see the performance drop.

Something like powerstrip can be a big help when monitors are dark. My monitor was set to 100% brightness, yet I couldn't see the crew in the conning tower at night, let alone any ships!
There are a few different monitor/display setting tools out there that can adjust gamma and brightness - worth investigating and getting one for your continued fish firing enjoyment!
Cheers,

Yes, the black skys commonly occur when conflicting mods are fighting for control of the sky (in a manner of speaking). Best bet is to reinstall SH3 clean from scratch, then patch and then blah blah blah.

This will occur if you do not roll back SH3 Cmdr before installing either the NYGM TW or the GW mod.
Best to now do a roll back and then re-install the mod/s in question.

I had the same problem with my old analog monitor. At night I couldnt even see my crew on deck. While this may be realistic, it sux from a gameplay point of view. This is not a problem inherent to any of the supermods. Its an individual monitor problem. I got a new 20in LCD and I can see great now:up: The big issue is that the game has no way to adjust gamma settings. You either need to adjust your brightness settings on the monitor or adhust the gamma/brightness through your video card.
It sux cause if you have a dark monitor then you need to lighten up everything to play SH3 but that makes it to light for everything else. So you always gotta be screwing with you settings. :damn:
I tried the light/dark sky mods but with my old monitor it still didnt remedy the problem. But, like I said, my old monitor was analog and about 6 years old. They tend to darken with age.
So does anyone know of a brighter night sky mod that can run safely with GW?

Thanks for the feedback. I swapped to a different monitor and it's fine. Still haven't got the new one (next week) but I expect it will be fine. The monitor I'm now using allows me to see easily, but it does tend to make everything a bit "grey".

That probably means that you cranked up the brightness but not the contrast... Did you crank up the contrast all the way up (or very near all the way)?

Depending on which agp card you have, you might want to look at the ATI 'Omega' driver suit. As part of their 'game profiles' facility you can create individual pre-set screen settings, gamma, brightness + contrast etc. And set the appropriate profiles to load these when a game is played, returning to the original settings when you exit the game. This can be done for any number of game profiles and their required screen setings. www.omegadrivers.net (http://www.omegadrivers.net)
