Well that is a shame. Did you not try GW mod for the game? I all but gave up on it but GW mod put some new life back in it! I have not stopped playing since I got it. I even stopped messing with IL2 and I never thought that would happen. I cannot wait for SH4!

Sir Big Jugs

Yes. I've used GW ever since it came out. Kudos to the great modders who made it, and Kpt.Lehmann, yes, I'm finished with the potatoes you asked me to peel...

IL2...

Yes, I am a very frequent user of IL2, have always been and will always be I guess. I have a virtual squadron, and am enjoying it very much. I suppose I'm just made for more "action-packed" games.:hmm:

You might find that after a break/rest for a while you want to come back to SH3. I find that tends to happen with me (with other games).

Whatever you do, enjoy

does the GW mod add that much life to the game? I just bought SHIII last night and can't stop playing it. I can't imagine it being any better. What does the GW mod add that makes it worth installing it? I have read about all the features but can someone give me some personal thoughts?

It adds, among other things:

A better recognition manual.
Great new sounds.
Many more cities.
"Living" ports full of ships.
Historical events.
More vessels and aircraft.
Much more realism, including a new, more real damage model.
The Red Cross (yipee:p!).
Better graphics, including a mod that increases view distance.
Many, many, many more radio messages. There are two things to consider, though:

Is your computer up to it? Grey Wolves needs a good deal of memory to run.
Do you want a highly realistic experience? If not, Grey Wolves may not be for you.

gord96
09-29-06, 02:34 PM
thats why I wasn't too sure about downloading it yet. I am still playing at 29% realism. Just starting out but I am not after the realism yet :) But the living ports and cities sounds cool though.

Incorrect.

The "realism level" is variable basd on player settings.

A player can attain a very high level of realism (or not) based on his / her choices in "realism settings."

There is far far more to GW than sound and graphics.

Yeh! I just instled GW today and like I posted somewhere before! WOW! Can't describe the difference! I now I playing at 49% realism (the only things I havne't runed on is Manual Targeting, No weapons officer and No camera or any sort outside the normal confines of the u-boat). I mus say that for someone who has played with 0% realism all the time, the pass is hard and cruel, but will make me a more experienced U-boat Kaleun.

Back on topic.

Sorry to see you leave Brewster Pilot. Any lost Kaleun is a hard thing to comprehend and to replace. Hopes that you'll come back (SH3 being very cheap to buy these days) or we'll see you in SH4.

But that doesn't mean you can't keep posting :sunny:

@gord96.. you can still play at 29% realism with Grey Wolves added but work your way thru it all. Try vanilla SHIII and test your patience whilst on Patrol until your desire and curiousity gets the better of you then add one of the Big mods like Grey Wolves, NYGM, War Ace Campaign or Frontflotille.

For me, the difference between vanilla and GW was like night and day. From the first frame the "wow factor" made it seem like a whole new game. Sailing on a sunny day is just beautiful (colors and graphics are more intense).

I was hesitant about GW due to the increased realism in gameplay, but GW gives you options when you install it (and you can still use the game's realism settings) and they can be tweaked with SH3 Commander and SH3 mini tweaker. I'd recommend anyone to go for it, especially if you're getting bored with the vanilla version.

A player can attain a very high level of realism (or not) based on his / her choices in "realism settings."With all due respect, the level of realism is still higher.

For example, even on 0% renown you can't just gun blindly at a ship with your deck gun until it blows up. You need to carefully aim for the waterline, eventually causing it to sink from flooding.

Lost contact time. Thats the variable anyway. WHenver your spotted by a hostile ship, it adverstises its discovery to all other ships in the area.

So for example if your lost contact time is 15, then when another ship hears this "sos" as it were, it will race to the adverstised location. If that location is greater then 15 minutes a way, it will stop at after 15 minutes have elapsed and go back to what it was doing. The longer the lost contact time, the greater your chances of seeing inquisitive destroyers or aircraft. However, make the lost contact time too long, and escorts won't rejoin a convoy if they get too far away from it.

to balance Brewster Pilot since I installed SH3 last year it has never left my system whilst other games have come (installed) and gone (uninstalled).

with the GW mod it is like having a new game all over again.

I cannot see myself parting with this game and it will sit proudly in my hard-drive until SH4 comes along

who knows I may even have the two on my drive together

Speaking of Greywolves does any GW player have or know where to DL that file that made sinking ships a bit easier - lighten the damaged mod. I wasted 5 torpedos on a blardy C2 last night! It should only have taken me 2 or 3. Even tho i have the XXI in 1939 i shouldn't be moaning should i !!!:arrgh!:. But if this file can be put in the mod enabler i can turn it on/off - whenever i want a harder patrol i can disable it. TIA

To the best of my knowlege there are currently 3 damage models, with a possible 4th one on the way. Those are:

1.) Stock
2.) DTB's 1st version . (which is what gw 1.1a is currently using.)
3.) DTB's 2nd version
4.) Not released, i understand that the GW team has an entirely new damage model theyve created that i *THINK* will be released with GWX. From what i understand it will Better then stock, but not quite as obtusive as DTB's. But don't quote me on that, im out of the loop.

Sir Big Jugs

You'll have to wait tell GWX is released first i think. It shouldnt be too much longer im guessing. I only know that a damage model was planned and worked upon, that is all i know. I must stress that thingsthat are in a design phase, dont always make it into final release. So, dont take me for a literal truth. Yes i was on the GWX dev team, but have since resigned after taking an extended break from the game and the community. So i am out of the loop, and even if i wasn't, i wouldn't be privy to provide details on the project. Personnaly however, i feel confident that the GW dev team will have completed the damage mod project in time to be released with GWX. Again the only peson who can say for sure would be Kpt Lehmann.

PRICELESS!...BLOODY PRICELESS! :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Hell. My skills are rusty...

First patrol of new career 1939. A nice VIIB loaded with G7e torps. West of mid-Ireland I run into this juicy convoy with THREE large tankers and many large & medium merchants. The escorts consisted of a V&W and a Flower Corvette. The first tanker took one torp. The second two, and the third was a one shot kill again. I also managed to damage a large cargo so it lay still in the water.

Then...

Just as I was about to dive to 160m to reload & shadow the convoy, from the middle of nowhere, without warning, comes the V&W and depth charges me at periscope depth.
Hull integrity to 35%, heavy flooding in all but the stern torpedo compartment and I lost my radiomen and almost all equipment, the periscopes, batteries, torpedo tubes hydrophone, radio mast etc etc etc.

And I begin to sink...

And sink...

And sink...

And sink...

I blow ballast like a thousand times, but it doesn't help. The lights go out, the hull integrity decreases and...

at 163m my beautiful boat is destroyed by pressure.

In 1939!!!

I feel like such a n00b!

Thank you Ducimus, you have given me the reason I spent Sunday afternoon taking a pounding for 4 hours real time by a Flower Corvette :damn: [pretty name but..] ! In the end, I had to surface as the Batteries were out. I ended up in this situation by attacking a Convoy, sinking a Tanker [my main objective] and crippling 2 small merchants. I hung around until the Convoy disappeared over the horizon, surfaced then proceeded to finish off the 2 with my deck gun as I had used up all the torps. Before I knew it, this Flower Corvette arrived on the scene resulting in a dive to the depths but it was unrelenting ! It went on and on, circling and pinging that I was beginning to wonder if there was a bug in the game ?! Must learn to be more patient.

To break contact, you must have to have "lost" your pursuer for however long that lostcontact time is. If for example, lostcontact time = 45, he won't give up until 45 minutes (gametime) have elaped without a contact. If your able to break contact for 40 minutes, and he regains contact 1 minute later, your going to be there for a very long time :P

To that end, ive noticed through much experientation that the AI will only ping when 3 conditions are met:
1. your inside his sonar cone,
2. he has a favorable aspect on you.
3. He has both 1, and 2 on you for X number of minutes. (I forget the variable name, but think of it as working like Lostcontact time, only in reverse. If this variable is 2 minutes for example, he has to have you inside his cone and good aspect for 2 minutes before he'll start pinging)

As for passive sonar to give you a simple answer, the game keys in on how many RPM's your Emotors are turning and if your in silent running or not (Silent runing seems boolean, its on or off). I think there's a minium threshold of noise you generate for them to react to it. You have to meet or exceed this minium noise for an X number of minutes. Sort of like active sonar.

Or to summerize simply, run silent, run deep, and keep your bow pointed at him to give him a narrow aspect to ping off of.
