View Full Version : Close call!

Last night I was doing the convoy attack exam to re-acquaint myself with SH3. I had penetrated to the centre column & sunk the lead escort. I hit the C2 with a torp, but only managed to damage, not sink it. Then I manoeuvred to get my stern tube to bear on the ships in the outer column.
I guess I concentrated too much on the map, when I took a look ou tthe periscope I saw nothing but the hull of a ship.
This was how close I was to colliding with it. fortunately emergency back & full left rudder prevented an embarrasing incident :D

Uff! Check your :ping: next time :D

I'm sure we all had such close encounters.

I remember taking the exam myself, not so long ago and I managed to sunk the Armed Traveler and a C2. But a completely forgot to see the destroyer. And it found me. Out of the blue "Destroyer in attack run!". I go into the outside view, and it was couple hundred metres away from me. CRASH DIVE! I just just managed to dive and to miss hitting him. But then a DC hit the hull (not next but on it). You can guess what happened. I got a compartment filled with water, even before I can't to deep.

And I also had the next misses like yours and hits, when a destroyer hit your conning tower with its hull and you lose all you flak guns!

I was a strange world outhere and we can be gratefull we can also restart the game. The real Keluens didn't have a save function :dead:

Im usually alerted to such an encounter by a loud crashing sound followed by jets of water and wimpering crew.

My favorite is crusing the surface in bad weather with limited visibility.

I usually use tactic launching torpedoes in the middle of convoy, sometimes cargoships "block" escorts and their own noise hide my boat's noise. But there is a price to pay as I often return port with scratches and bruises in my u-boat's hull and conning tower.

Funny that this actually happened to Peter Cremer in U-333.....his target (a tanker with avgas - ouch!) altered course 90 degrees at the last minute. Cremer raised periscope only to see BLACK - the side of the ship!

Ran him over and did plenty of damage. He did point out that, had he hit the tanker at that range, the explosion of its cargo would most likely have killed all involved - his boat and the tanker!

This is my closest close call ever...I peeked out for a second just to see what my new boat looked like underwater (had never used an XXI much before) and this is what I was greeted with!

:o wow... thats crazy.

For some reason, mines in SHIII scare me more than anything else... they are just so creepy.

Got to love the close calls with mines, In World War 1 more U-boats were lost to mines than any other cause.

Reminds me of a Churchill quote,

"There is no greater thrill than to be shot at, without result":o

Always figure out the main direction of the convoy, and if you get in amongst the ships, always do a 360 degree check, before turning to attack with the bow or stern tubes as you may need to adjust your position before making the final turn to attack. This way you can avoid many unpleasant suprises.

Yeh! Usually I'm looking at my damage control panel, walking around the bridge, "talking to the radioman", then the ussual "Ship spotted!" and then "We are being damaged!", "Critical flooding!" or "Diesel engines damaged!", so YEH, it's a very interesting sound

I came across a convoy of roughtly twenty ships today. It was almost totally unescorted, with its only protection being an Auxillary Cruiser. I managed to sink a Medium Cargo and the Auxillary Cruiser, and damage a Tanker and two other ships. I surfaced and stuck with the defenseless convoy, hoping the wind would calm from the current 11 m/s so that I could use my deck gun.

Then I got careless and was rammed by a Medium Cargo:damn:.

The worst thing is I saw the collision coming. I was at the map screen, with my boat behind and to the right of the ship and passing it, and I thought, wow, that's going to be close. Then I thought, "hey, ain't I a little too close"?

I stepped onto the bridge a few seconds before it hit me dead on:cry:.

Funny that they don't go off when they don't physically touch you. Didn't they have proximity detonators:-??

Be glad. If they DID, noone would survive to tell the encounter with a mine! You would just gte the screen of dead and "Game Over".

But it makes you wonder :hmm:

I've had several collisions with DEs and DDs and survived thankfully. They wander off dazed and usually sink with in 30 minutes And like has been said, no credit for it. Why is that I wonder, SHIII bug or just because you've sunk a ship not using torpedos?

I have always wondered about that too. :) A well known bug. You could sink tons of escorts by ramming them with your conning tower IIRC. As to the mines, most of them in WW2 were contact mines, especially in the earlier years. Later on there were more and more magnetic ones.
