I was wondering what was the maximum depth different types of depth charges exploded at (British, US). Also, if there were changes, what years did they go into effect?
Using NYGM ver 2.2. I'm in 1942 right now, and was caught by three destroyers after sinking a convoy escort in the "Malta" single mission. My VIIC was at 180 meters creeping along at 2kts in silent running when I got nailed.
Thanks

I dont have a quantitative answer for you.
I do know that DC's dont care about crush depth :know:
are you talking about "REAL" dc's or in the mod?

See http://www.de220.com/Armament/Depth%20Charges/DepthCharges.htm
It would seem that the later versions of depth charges could detonate at a depth of around 1,000 feet.

Nice one nemo
For the British DC's
The Mark VII DC " The standard DC of the first three years of World War II "
Sink Rate / Terminal Velocity 9.9 fps (3.0 mps)
Settings 300 feet (91 m) max, later units 500 feet (182 m)
Mark VII Heavy " This had a 150 lbs. (68 kg) cast-iron weight attached to increase the sinking rate. The British claimed this DC would split a 0.875 inch (22 mm) hull at 20 feet (6.1 m) and force a submarine to surface at about twice that distance. A minol charge introduced in 1942 increased these distances to 26 feet (7.9 m) and 52 feet (15.8 m), respectively "
Sink Rate / Terminal Velocity 16.8 fps (5.1 mps)
Settings 300 feet (91 m) max
The deepest DC setting was the US Mark 16 " Postwar DC for projector use, only. Mod 0 was hydrostatic, Mod 1 was acoustic. Last DC developed for the USN
Date In Service 1943
Sink Rate / Terminal Velocity 31 fps (9.4 mps)
Settings 2,500 feet (762 m)
Hope that helps :)

I do know that DC's dont care about crush depth :know:If they can't implode, then why aren't submarines made of the same stuff;)?
Reminds me of the "why aren't planes made of the same materials as black boxes"-joke. Meh.

Well I suppose they can implode if they dident explode first its just that they arent really concearned with it
Of course DC's dont have any feelings at all... silly me

It was after capturing U-570 and analysing her extensively that the Brits realised (much to their horror!) that U-Boats were capable of diving far deeper than believed.....they immediately made their DCs capable of deeper depths.

Technically they were already capable of deeper depths. They were just guessing wrong and adjusted there settings accordingly.
Even then it was still a guessing game a bit like rolling dice you might get lucky now and then.
When the hedgehog and "squids" using contact fusing that all changed. The kill ratio increased by nearly 60%.
