Hi guys....I am getting this msg. when I play the game for an extended period of time...I have just added another 512 megs of memory giving me a total of over 1 GB....my video card also has memory of its own...and yet I am still getting this msg.....it slows my game up when windows tries to correct this....Is there anyway around this....? I think when I TC alot this exacerbates the problem....do any of you all get this msg also?? I had hoped that when I got the new video card I would get rid of these problems...but that has not been the case...:damn:

Check the size of your swap file (virtual memory). Go to Control Panel, System, Advanced, click Settings in the "Performance" section. Itīs either a fixed-sized swap file thatīs too small (set it to 1GB) or itīs a dynamically-sized swapfile that canīt grow because thereīs not enough space left on the partition.

Virtual memory is not related to system memory but space on your C:/ HDD. I'd suggest that a tidy up is in order of your C:/ Drive. You can also set Virtual memory size manualy under My Computer (right click) properties (left click) Advance Tab (left click) Performance Settings (left click) Advance Tab (left click) Virtual memory change (left click) select Custom Size. Then copy the Maximum size and Paste that into Initial Size. Then click Set. Then click ok and close the app. You now have set the Virtual Memory to a preset MANUAL size that will never change and will always be available. This is best done on a CLEAN OS install only with no other programs installed. IF you have already install a lot of other programs then CLEAN you HDD of ALL uneccessary programs and left over bits that are taking up space thats not needed. That way you will get the biggest space thats available and usable.

:yep:

Every month ? Use Diskkeeper and set in to start defragging whenever the PC goes to screensave mode. Works perfectly !

And you never have to use that feature ripped windows defrag proggie again :-)

I have the same Msg everytime, ofcourse I have a 512 Ram, and the virtual settings is on 1Gb.

I only have this when I travel long time on High TC settings.

Also to save that space is to close background programs that you dont use and that windows dont need Example: the icons next to the clock. close the programs you dont need.

Just leave the vir mem size settings open, choose the option "let windows handle it" and see what happens then.

I have the virtual memory adjusted at it maximun set always, 4096 Max and 4092 min....

Any way, SH3 seems to have some kind of problem with the ram memory fragmentation or some thing.

If i run many missions without reboot, my FPS droops down dramatically, i only neeed to reboot to solve the problem. :hmm:

Well, Redwine
I have the same problem, but not only with SH3 with most of the games, I think the problem is Windows XP that if you require the system a lot that XP loses control.

for example : when I start XP , and check the Virtual ram space it uses 200 Ram to run the desktop with the programs I need (Norton Protection Center, etcetc) when I use some programs and require the PC the use some of its system and check the ram again when I have everything closed again it uses 260 - 280 Virtual ram space to run desktop. I might be wrong but thats what I notice.

I went into the virtual memory setting and found it was set to a initial size of 748 mb and a max of 1546mb .....so I put it on sys managed......Under space available it says I have 48107 mb ..... should I leave it on sys managed ....I am assuming that the space available number is dynamic depending on what is running in the background.....right??

No, do what Cdr Gibs recommended, set it to a manual/fixed sized.

Well if you wait that long it will take forever.

I defrag manually every other day, which takes about 30 seconds :|\\ and I'm using Diskeeper 10 as well. The program also allows me to bootup defrag which will get everything else that normal defragging won't get.

Setting to sys managed is a good way to check if the size is really the problem. After that you could always try to find the optimum for your system.

I personally think performance gain from a fixed size for the vir mem is over rated a lot. My system shows no differences during benchmarking at all. I DO get a better performance by putting the vir mem in a dedicated partition on a different disk then where the actual operating system is installed.

Have a seperate partition for your pagefile, it's easier to manage. Pagefile size should be set to 1.5 times the amount of RAM installed, but don't forget to allow for future expansion.

Many thanks for info Hunter.... there is no program to automatically defrag the memory without rebbot ?

Same opinion here....

You have enough space, try adjusting it near the max value admited by W XP, try fixed max and min values, in example 4096 and 4092.

4096 is the max value admited by W XP.

I DO get a better performance by putting the vir mem in a dedicated partition on a different disk then where the actual operating system is installed.

I am using 2 Hard Drives.... and i adjusted 2 Virtual memory banks, one on each HD, both of 4096/4092 size, but... how to know wich bak is using W XP.... ? or how to order it to use one of them with priority ?

No, do what Cdr Gibs recommended, set it to a manual/fixed sized. Well I changed it to a preset value...but it wont let me enter anything larger than 4096 mb....so that is what I entered......

Redwine,
Flight Simulator AutoStart (FSAutoStart) will defrag your memory without a reboot.

Set the minimun value just near to that maximun value.... in example 4090 or 4092 to ensure a big virtual memory capacity always.

Many thanks Irish....

I just uninstalled it yesterday.... because it result not intuitive for me and i can not understand how to use it....

I will take a look over it a new time....

I havnt defraged in almost 2 years! the problem with my pc was that the HD was copied from another one, and the copying program, made the sections of the HD so small, that now nothing can comprehend defraging it, it will just say I dont have enough memory free

edit: I just checked it! i havnt defragged in 1105 days!

Ok the best thing you can do is Uninstall as much as you can of old, boring, unused programs that you can and also clear out as many stray bits that you can find of say old log files, images, video's, mp3's ect ect. Then grab Partion Magic (any version, I use v.8) and use that to redo your HDD partions and make them bigger. This will mean at least 1 partion will most likely have to go. Now the good bit about partion magic is that it can redo partions on the fly without data loss. Its not 100% recommended by the makers of Partion Magic, as always the CYA policy is to back up first. BUT I have been using Partion Magic for over 5 years now and todate never had any drama with it.

1's thats done you will now have room to breath on your C: drive. If nothing else at least make sure you get more space on your C: drive and Defrag it. Since its the Drive used to run your OS (therefore your PC from) its always advisable to leave C: drive with at least 30% of the drive empty to allow for system maintance and other system related apps.

In fact as a rule I only ever install the OS and system related apps/files to my C: drive. I never install anything else to C: drive. That includes games, 3D rendering programs ect ect. Thats what D:,E:,F:,G:, H:, I:, J: and K: HDD's are for. ;)
