View Full Version : Ai subs in Sh4, how important it for you
It was missing in SH3, considering this is a dynamic naval sim how important do think computer controlled subs in SH4 is....
No matter which side the subs are on (or both), thats not relevant. just weather the devs should take the time to include Sub AI this time around.

I voted yes. US subs doing ops together was very common and certainly could belong in this sim.
It would definately be not a deal breaker for me but I would certainly like it.
I voted Yes as well. After playing the original Silent Hunter, it will seem odd if they are not present. I would'nt expect to encounter them on a regular basis, but it would add alot knowing they may be lurking out there at periscope depth.

I voted yes.
Of course, I would still buy it if it was just me, my boat and I against the Japanese but, it would be so much more enjoyable with a little help from my friends. ;)

It would be nice to have an AI sub or two around, especially towards the end of 1944, when american used wolfpacks for the first time. I would still by the game if they didn't have it in. but it would be nice...:yep:
Just remeber to say please to the dev's when you ask...
Please devs please.... If they do AI for submarines I will model and add all the ones they will likely leave out, like british and dutch, I dont care what it takes, ill do it!
Ill even find a way to import the IX/C/D2 so we can have rare encounters with Monsun boats in asia.
If there is also Ai for aircraft launch torpeedos and rocket attacks - the possibilies for adding planes is endless too! I hope the game is easier to mod (add units) than SH3

You have to be very carefull with promises like that. But this one is noted down with a big marker.
So no chickening out afterwards or complain you do not have enough time, or whatever, to do it :arrgh!:
i wish they would work on an AI system that referenced an editable text file for the list of AI actions available.....im sure it is within the bounds of reason to do....then users could edit the complexity of the AI behavoiur to try to get the best out of it ...given a comprehensive list of possible AI actions we could edit away to our hearts content..SH2 allowed for various AI "stances" to be written into the mission file which were flawed but at least gave some room for experimentation.....an extension of that concept but giving greater scope would be something that would keep folks modding away for many a year...
just allowing the user some access to the basic AI instructions by some route or another would be a nice touch especaily given the stae of play regarding AI in the franchise right now..at the end of the day any game that is played as single player is completely ruled by the AI...the AI is the game when all is said and done...it's un avoidable

rest assured if I can achieve anything like i suggested, ill share it with everyone

I'd be somewhat dissappointed should there not be any AI subs, That would not, however, put me off the game.

I'm about a 1/4 of the way into reading "Thunder Below!" and already there have been several mentions of possible encounters with IJN subs , particularly midgit subs. I'm in agreement with the opinion that at least AI IJN subs should be included. My first subsim was Silent Service on the C64 many moons ago and with SH4 being what a 4th/5th/6th Generation subsim? Well then I would really hope that a feature that was obviously such an important one during the real wartime events be included in the final product. Obviously the ideal would be AI and playable IJN and US subs to confront or wolfpack with respectively but I appreciate there's no chance of that. I'd quite happily see the game delayed for AI subs to be implemented, I've still got SH3 to keep me amused after all.

If they have the time and resources available, then yes, but it won't break my heart if they aren't able to get it in the sim by the deadline, whatever that may be.
I think it will be pretty pathetic if they cant manage it this time round...

I made this little sub vs. sub mission in a Norwegian fjord in Silent Hunter III, and it was actually quite nerve-wrecking. You know that S-Class is there someplace, and then all of a sudden this submarine icon pops up right next to you.
If done right (with good AI), computer-controlled submarines can add a lot to the game.

*IF* they get all the other bugs worked out, and *IF* they get all the allied subs working properly. (that is already a tall order)
I'd like to see AI subs. Not real important to me. It might be interesting to be able to coordinate some kind of balanced attack.
It would be nice to get ambushed by the odd japanese sub too, (very occasionally) it would break up the usual aircraft and escort combo (which can get predictable after a while) and keep us on our toes. :smug:

well from he books that i have read about (and in my opinan) most of the IJN ships that were sunk in the early part of the Pasific sub war where subs (I-24 ext.) and if any one here, which there will be can fire up SH 1 then just try to run a campan with out runing into about 1 or 2 IJN subs evary other mission.
start a thread but found this,, Cold Waters I can't play on this machine but SH-4 nukes I can

I recently returned to SH and funny enough I was only thinking it would be great to have AI subs.
I remember SergButo in SH2 made some and they worked good, I made a few missions using them as a Wolfpack, it was great fun.
Sorry if this is an old thread but a vote yes from me too although a bit late lol.
Col.
Bump,, I got a couple of Destroyers in 1.4 that could stand to have depth charges playable.

I actually found one of those submerged Japanese midget subs in the Bungo going 10 kts, obvious no AI, didn't attack and barely underwater. After many attempts I was able to get under it and catch it between my deckgun and conning tower and took it all the way back to base. No medal given...

I'd like to see it. It would add a level of realism that was present in WW2. From IJN adversaries to spar with to fellow USN boats to create wolf packs & attack convoys, I think it would dramatically add to the realism of the game.
