View Full Version : My Infiltration Of Loch Ewe on 100% realism

Well...I'm about a week into the war w/my Flotilla 1 guy in his Type IIA. He went to his patrol sector and fulfilled his duty, there, and since Loch Ewe wasn't so far away, thought trying to infiltrate it might be a fun thing to try.

Well, I have the periscope BARELY up so I can look out for mines while cruising at 1 knot. Saw only one. Then I found the first subnet, and got over it. In broad daylight w/choppy seas!! Probably not the best conditions. Actually, they're the worst, but I need daylight for those darn mines and nets.

As I've been compelled to stay submerged for rather a long time, and my CO2 may become an issue if I don't surface. I must say, it seems unrealistic that I can actually surface in an enemy harbor and recharge the batteries and purge the CO2, but I may just do that. I know I can get away w/it.

So, do you think I'll get killed? And do you think I'll be able to nail that Nelson class BB?

Never played on 100% realism, but I do play on 62% and I have raided Loch Ewe. In your IIA, you only have 5 torps so when you target the nelson you will have to aim for his ammo bunker. Under neath the big fwd gun turret.

You can surface and avoid being shot at but I would wait untill night to do so. And only when the patrolling destroyer is moving away from you and drop back to pd when hes further away. The hard part will be escaping after you attack because all those destroyers know you're there and youre in shallo watters, cornored.

Heres what I do. After you sink the Nelso use your observation scope and position your sub really close to the wreckage of the nelson. The sound of the ship breaking up will hide the noise of your sub, plus patrolling destroyers wont be able to get near you because of the wreckage. Use some TC untill they cool off then make your escape. You may even be able to surface by the Nelson at night for air and be hidden and/or protected:up:

Oh, I'd got into Loch Ewe, before. And I've taken out that Nelson w/one shot!! I think I need to aim about 6 meters down below the middle turret. See the Nelson go up is rather cool, though I suspect in real life if you hit the ammo bunker the explosion would be far, far worse.

Apparently, the Nelson continues respawning, even if you've killed it twice (and therefore whiped out the class).

Hmm... Sneaking into a port.. sounds like an adventure. I think I'll give it a shot tonight, I have a VIIB boat so it will be a little easier for me.

What!?! You can actually spot the mines/sub nets? I've never seen anything, I just go BOOM, and game over... Wazzit look like?

I got through in VIIB with 80% realism & managed to destroy the ships in harbour however all were destroyers, I know there is the possabiliy of there being a task force there but typical, gone when I got there!:D There were 4 nets to get around (some damage from these) and a mine field - for some reason 1 knot! (my campaign based on TW & War Ace combined), it was pure luck getting in, but I wasn't going to go through it all again to get out so I waited till night, surfaced then "End Patrol"! Needless to say that a bunch of medals were waiting for me!:smug:

I finished my first patrol on my career I recently started. It's October 1940, and I sunk 4 merchant ships, one of which was American, I'm sure Doenitz will have my ass for that. Anyways, I got tired and I started to lose focus, and sneaking in to Loche Ewe while I'm almost asleep just wouldn't work very well. Tommorow I will though, and hopefully I'll take down the Nelson!

That's why I have my periscope ever so slightly up, and start my infiltration during the day!!! So I can see them!!!

Yeah, for Britain it's not realistic, though. I've done a bit of sailing around the British Isles, and due to the heavy tidal streams the water is quite murky with silt. The entire coastline south of Scotland would on average have underwater visibility of two meters max, in broad daylight. The Brits talk about 'blue-water sailing' when they're not in home waters.

Gibraltar, on the other hand....
