View Full Version : Which Japanese CV's for SHIV?

I have chosen ten carrier classes (IMO) of the Imperial Japanese Navy - I couldn't include them all because of poll limitations. I have left out a couple of the most obvious classes (Shokaku class, Taiho, Shinano) that will probably be included anyway - not perfect but the best I can do. Also, I didn't have room for the other CVEs and MAC's. Of the carriers listed, which one do you think is the LEAST important to have included? Please post further thoughts in the thread itself, due to limitations of the poll.

I think the most natural is to follow the history and make a choice about the IJN carrier historically relationed with USN submarine activities(Victims or damaged for example) .

From the list

-The Kaga in Midway hit by a dud torpedo
-The Junyo was damaged by one submarine
-Unryu(1th ship of the serie) was sunk by one submarine
-Chuyo was sunk also by one submarine
-Not in the list, but mentioned, Shokaku and Tahio also lost by submarines(and also Shinano)

-The Taiyo class maybe is interesant to included because this carriers were used to transports planes to the base airfields in many islands and were not utilised as fleet carriers.
-From the first two divisions , one carrier with left island (Akagi for example)from the 1th Divison and a second of the 2th Div(Soryu with right island).
-Hosho is not interesant , was the first IJN carrier but was, apart Midway, a training carrier in metropolitan waters for all the war.Maybe this one is the least important.
-Zuiho and Shoho ,well, if we speak of carrier battles yes,but in the context of USN submarine warfare, no.
-Chitose and Chiyoda are latter war transformation of seaplane tenders,no too interesant always in relation with USN submarine warfare.
-Same for Ryujo and Ryuho ,utilised as fleet carriers.

Must haves are at the very least the IJN escort carriers. Taiyo class(all 3 sunk by US subs), Shinyo(sunk by submarine), and only the Kaiyo escaped destruction by subs but met its demise by carrier a/c.

I think least important are the Akagi, Kaga, Hiryu, and Soryu. Yeah, it'd be fun huntin' them in early war scenarios but they meet their demise too early for that much effort. But if they're included, all the merrier. :D

I think this was the list of carriers from SHI:

Akagi
Kaga
Soryu
Shokaku class
Ryujo
Ryuho
Zuiho class
Junyo class
Taiho
Shinano
Unryu class
Taiyo class

The Hosho, Hiryu, Kaiyo, and Shinyo were omitted - the Chitose class were included as pre-converted seaplane tenders only. Still, pretty good selection overall.

If they all existed in the Pacific War then they should all be included. That's my believe.

The point is that the Dev team probably doesn't have the time or resources to include them all, so even though it would be best to have them all we almost definitely can't.

Since so much of early war U.S. sub ops was oriented around Ultra and being directed to intercept IJN carriers - any of them - it's hard to pick one "least important" class. I understand the point of the question but I'm hard pressed to pick one class I could live without. Same goes for other capital ships.

Of all the carriers in the list, in my opinion the Hosho (http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/images/g350000/g351904.jpg) is the least important. When the war started she was in the front line action, but after Midway she was mostly used for training missions in home waters. The Shinano (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Shinano.jpg) which is not listed in the poll in my opinion should be included. She had a short lifespan even for a Japanese carrier, but at the time she was built, she was the biggest carrier in the world. The Shinano also was fitted with an armored flight deck, the only other carrier in the Japanese Navy to have one was the Taiho (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:HIJMS_Taiho_02.jpg).

I didn't list the Shinano, Taiho, or Shokaku classes because there weren't enough options in the poll. Since the poll was asking which would be the least important carrier, I decided to omit the ones which were probably the most important. Subjective, I know, but it was the best I could do. And anyone can post their thoughts here, if the options of the poll aren't satisfactory to them.:yep: Of course, that is a good idea anyway.

Truthfully I doubt it will matter much. Soon after release you know modders will be hard at work modeling what ships are not yet in-game.

The CVE's should be a must as well as the Skokaku, Zuikaku, Shinano, and possibly the Unryu class ships(tho they saw little service they were introduced at a time when US subs were truly killing machines and even one was damaged by a sub).

Without a doubt I'd love to see them all but seriously probably will not.

If I had my pick as a sub commander during the WHOLE war which CVs to implement it would be these.

CV Shokaku and Zuikaku(both saw lengthy service throughout war)
CV Junyo and Hiyo(tho hardly considered fleet carriers these 2 served lengthy careers)
CV Shinano(tho very very short service life would be a great target in the periscope)
CV Unryu, Amagi, and Katsuragi(tho hardly any service between the 3 would be great contribution for late war hunting in Japanese waters)
CVL Zuiho(also saw alot of service)
CVL Chitose and Chiyoda(saw a good amount of action during 1944)
CVE Taiyo, Chuyo, and Unyo(all 3 sunk by submarine, escorted convoys)
CVE Kaiyo(used for escorting convoys and ferrying a/c)
CVE Shinyo(sunk by submarine, escorted convoys)

There would be my wishlist. :)

...and possibly the Unryu class ships(tho they saw little service they were introduced at a time when US subs were truly killing machines and even one was damaged by a sub).

Actually, the Unryu was sunk by the USS Redfish, and not just damaged.:o Which means that the class would be an even better choice for SHIV.:hmm:

If they were all there, why not include them.

Well, basically it's always a question of resources:

- development time spent in modelling and adding the ships to the game (model, texture(s), functionality, damage model, etc)
- memory on user's computer
