Good evening guys,

I am only on my second patrol with GW (which had me re-start playing SH3, great job GW team! ), and I am saving some renown to get a type IX soon (which I never did with stock SH3, always stuck with type VII in careers).

This led me to wonder about what you guys think as "must haves" in term of what you "buy" with your renown.

Just curious!

I only really use it to get new uboot types. Maybe the occasional hydrophone or radar upgrade.

Engine supercharger upgrade, better batteries, newer hydrophones, newer sonar, BOLDS, and finally snorkle...just about in that order. I follow this up by improving the conning towers when available, which allows me to upgrade the AA/flak guns.
I stay away from radar and radar warning devices.

Depends on when you plan to upgrade your boat. Upgrades don't transfer to the new boat. Get the engine and batterie upgrades, they're cheap and well worth it. If you're planning to wait for the boat upgrade until '42 then I would recommend a radar detector also. Contrary to another posters opinion, the detector is your mostest and bestest friend in 41 and onward.

I allways uppgrade with all the options possible, but then you dont have those 30 000 needed to get a XXI boat 1944

My last campaign (now 1940) I decided to fight with a modell II boat all the way to 1944 and save my renow to that moment. But some aspects from gaming is missed offcourse when cannot do long patrols to Afrika or USA with model IID boat.

I been now sailing 5 patrols and are on my 6th. They all have been around Englands east coast. Somehow its getting booring. I wait the opening of new bases in France. Lets see if we get to patrol those juicy convoy lanes.

About upgrading, well first of all I make up my mind which sub I’m going to take for the whole war. At this moment my choice has fallen on the type VII/C
It’s a nice Submarine to have. Good upgrade choices.

After that I upgrade it to the max. Every update that’s new I put it into my sub
Like performance: Engines and the Batteries.
Defences: Conning Tower to add more flak. Because even it’s not going to be enough against planes you still have a good chance to defend yourself from those surprise attacks.

My plan is when the U-9 has been sunk or made it to the end of the War, that I’m going to start a new Career in the 2nd Flotilla and get myself after some Patrols in the IIA a type IXB. My question about it does the IXB has the same upgrades as the IXD2?
Or what are the other differences between the IXB and IXD2?

I tend to skip the conning tower and flak gun upgrades. I figure since I've developed this instinct to slam the "C" button everytime a plane is spotted, I'm not going to be spending too much time slugging it out on the surface with them.

I'd say go for everything that gives you better "eyes and ears". Radar detection, hydrophone, sonar, etc.

Hi, now Jan, 44 with NYGM 1.03 Tonnage Lite and, for me, Radar Detection Stuff is a 'must have'... my 'C' button is exhausted and all I'm bumping into now is Liberator's and single Warships :nope: !

My favourite is the Type 1X series.....adding all upgrades as they become available :arrgh!:

If you believe in realism, DON'T get the engine upgrades. Except for the Type VIIa all Type VII and IX u-boats came with superchargers, and the top speeds in the game without them are the actual top speeds of the real boats with them. Taking the supercharger upgrades is cheating.

So there.:p

Thanks for the info Steve...I honestly never realised...hmm, must have a look at mr Bagnasco's book

When available make sure you get decoys. They'll save your bacon..... sub I mean. ;)

Not using GW but everytime I've upgraded my sub the upgrades have transfered to the new boat. I didn't think they transfered either untill I tried to get them for the new boat, but was promptly told "You already have them".

My Hunger for harbor Raiding uaually gets me killed by a DD in shallow waters. I have yet to see 41, So the only Upgrades I usually get is upgrading from The IIA to the VII, Hydrophones, Batteries, And Engine upgrades

every upgrade is a good upgrade..someone can say renown is not enough to catch the XXI later, but hey guys, with my last 2 weeks patrol, with my type IIA realism at 57%, GW installed, i sunk 2 Merchants a Pass Liner and TT....i evaded 6 DD seeking me, and managed to go back home with 99% hull intact (i touched the ground when i was in the enemy harbour at 0knts)..and i got 20000 renown! U-A-O!...probably a game error, but...who wouldn't accept it?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this guys...

I'll try to save the renown to get the type IX asap, and then upgrade that one to the max... (except for the superchargers!)

What harobor did you raid in the IIA that had a tanker and passenger liner? You must of had all one shot kills because you only had 5 torps right?

Does anyone know what's in Valletta harbour using GW in Feb 41?

I found it almost empty around that time. Go for Gibraltar, its worth the extra hazzle. (Not recommended as someones first harbour raid)

HunterIXC: Good to finally see you in a decent boat! :D For me it will always only be the VIIC.

Pros:
*The best looking sub
*Nimble

Cons:
*Range

It is by far the best subs to go harbour-fishin` in, and excellent at avoiding depth charges. I tried that in a IX D2 once, and got smacked around pretty badly.

Thanks stabiz...in the middle of a 'lean' patrol at the mo, so will give it a go

Type VIIs are nice, but you can't beat the IXs, especially the IX/D2. It might not dive like the others but so far in 4 patrols it's done great. And when I've been in trouble with the dreaded DDs hunting us, it's gotten us out alive and in one piece every time. Oh, and the decoys sure helped too. ;)

I think adding a supercharger or what the german call the "COMPRESSOR" is fuel economic(specialy in low knots) the compressor willn't activate...
When compressor is handy when you chase a ship(or try to pass by) to use your stern torp, to sink that ship.

I think the engine upgrade is original as in WWII.... all it's to save fuel.

I remember when i start with SHIII with U-1 type boat, and had a mission to AN14, that U-1 type used half a tank of fuel even i setted all the time at slow-ahead...
But i never upgraded the engine of the U-1 because i was saving reown for a VII type...

and the same story with batteries, that some batteries for the VII charging quicker than normal, is also cheating... specialy when it's summer(long daylight and lesser darkness), is quicker-charger would be handy to charging up the battery quicker when it become sunrise... and time to dive...

Now i am in Mission 6(april 1940), it's handy to add a quick-charger battery because it's summer soon...., so i am planning to add a Type 800 battery for my VII...

Doing some reading the other night, and came across some info regarding some engine mods that were made by using a compressed form of hydrogen peroxide to inject with the diesel. They could then run the diesels submerged, no need for oxygen, at a pace of about 20 knots.

The problem was the price of the hydrogen peroxide, and the containment methods required to keep it under pressure.
