Decided to try out NYGM tonite, a good solid try. :) So I started out in 1941 out of Brest in a VIIC.

First few days were just spend traveling and swapping out crew members constantly as they grew tired. Constantly.

Finally I get down just south of Vigo and get a report of a convoy almost dead ahead and heading my way! Great news. So I pretty much just lay in wait for them. At 7am I hop on the bridge and check to see if my lookouts see anything. Fully rested crew, calmish seas, light fog if at all, and the dolts don't see the destroyer 6000m off the bow!!!

Pop down to periscope depth, wait till the warship contact passes 000 then pop up the 'scope and take a look. Small merchant.. ok.. large cargo, lets get him.. mediu--oooh transport!! All doors open, I figure out that they'll be almost in range in 7 minutes. Down 'scope and wait. Lalala.. lalala.. times up! Pop up the scope.. range in on the transport.. eels away! Now, we'll swing over to the large-- OMG Dido Light Cruiser! Lock, turn towards it.. EELS AWAY!! Spin the 'scope around back, drop another torp into the large cargo that was just passing me, then dive and hide.

Transport went up instantly.. HUGE fireball, 20 minutes of explosions, yummy bulkhead breaking sounds. I apparently missed the cruiser and medium cargo though. Oh well, still 7800t.

So I'm hiding, and the cruiser and a Black Swan Frigate are pinging, depth bombing.. blah blah blah. I'm down at 193m and they can't hit me, but sure seem to know I'm there.

So like an hour real time goes by and these guys won't give us. One sits still (losing sonar contact) as the other circles, then both jump me. But it's all for naught. Eventually I hear one pull away. The black swan was still there though.

So i hatch a clever plan. Off silent running, load my real torpedo and rise to 'scope depth. Try to bait it to come at me, it does.. FIRE! and miss. :( Boo hoo. Back down I go hoping this'll end soon, since really it's gotten quite boring.

Then sonarguy picks up a closing contact. Hmm, the cruiser coming back perhaps? I have two tubes reloaded up front now, and with the guy circling I'll never get a front shot, so I turn into the sound contact, flank speed and periscope depth again. Risk the 'scope and see another black swan frigate coming right at me!! Oh joy. This time I wait.. 700m... 600m... 500m... LOS!! LOS!!! He tries to turn, but I nail him with the first.. and second HITS AMMO! BLAM! My first warship kill. \o/

Well, now I'm psyched. Killed the calvary, so I can surely take the other guy. Try to get range on him, but just can't. So instead I blow tanks, hoping to quickly make it to periscope depth and get a snap shot in. 100... 90... 8--no, 60.. wth.. 40.. 30.. 20.. ok really stop.. no!! SURFACE!!! I splash up right in front of the guy. :( He gets in a few deck gun shots as I crash dive. I get away from the first spread, but than somehow he gets some deeper and in front of my. Torpedo room damaged. Switch to the crew screen to move some people in there for repairs and completely forget to check my depth. I'm still going and going.. 70.. 80.. 90.. hear things pop in my control room. Then my engine room is GONE, everyone dead.. reach for the surface button and I'm dead... Abandon Career - death by pressure. :shifty:

In hind sight I think I still got the 40m or so of "omg you're gonna die" feedback, I was just so preoccupied and going so fast that i dropped those last 40m in a matter of seconds.

Even with the incredibly boring and never ending depth charges session and eventual "all my fault for getting gutsy, but seriously, wasting 2 hours of ping boom ping boom isn't FUN" death it was still a mostly enjoyable patrol. Destroyer AI needs to learn to give up. :/

So good night Oblt.z.S. Fritz Appel and your painfully perfectly planned crew. Sleep well in the depths tonite.:arrgh!:

Tell the truth: you were feeling cocky, on top of the world, invincible...you thought you could take 'em all down didn't you?:smug: :arrgh!:

Goodness, how often I've erred similarly!:damn: I too often go for one ship too many.

Kind regards,

They want to sent the boat with Bernard aboard to the bottom. FAST!

Is Bernard aboard any of your boats, Dowly?:)

Well, I resurrected good ol' Fritz and his skeleton crew to try out NYGM again. Same patrol really, DH19, a 10 day cruiser at Ahead Slow from Brest.

This time I tried out three watch shifts and two of everyone else. Seemed to work pretty well for mangement swaping everyone out at 0800, 1600 and 0000.

I got to the patrol area and finally got a radio contact about a convoy north of me, heading ESE. Did some plots, figured out that at Ahead Standard I'd meet up with them around 9pm. That was good. (Now, turns out I miscalculated horribly, it wasn't 9pm it was 1900!! So i bumped into them during daylight, but it was foggy and stormy so I wasn't too worried.

I plotted a parallel course to the convoy and started to swap people around since I'd missed their 1600 crew change. As I'm doing this someone screams "We're under attack!!" So I crash dive, turn away and hope for the best.

10-15 minutes later they are pining me, depth charges are above me, so I think I'm ok. Drop to 100m and keep going on silent run. Pinging me again, I drop deeper (really should have just plummeted from the start) and turn south.

Depth charges but I'm not worried since they'd been off before, and I'm lower and heading even deeper now. WRONG! From inside the control room I see the boat start to shudder. Damage reports flood in! Torpedo tubes damaged, something else damaged, stern quarters are flooding!

So I move my chief engineer, who is repair certified, and a full crew of rested petty officers into stern quarters since I know NYGM does repairs based on where the damage it. The little flooding icon reads 1:15 and is getting lower. I dump the rest of my off shift crew into the damage control area up top, and give them a watchman. I click on stern quarters, but there's nothing to repair?

So I have a full set of rested people led by a repair officer IN the flooded compartment, I have a full set of rested people and an officer in damage control, but there's no listed damage to fix and the flooding NEVER stops. One minute real time later I'm dead. What happened?

I forgot to turn OFF Silent Running. Hehe

"Oops, my bad!" - Bernard.

So tonite's lessens are... Pay more attention to silent running. Plot more carefully. Don't put Bernard in charge of repairs. :) Oh well, I have a save from before I met the convoy, so tomorrow we'll try things a little differently.
