Situation Called Dire in West Iraq
Anbar Is Lost Politically, Marine Analyst Says
By Thomas E. Ricks (http://projects.washingtonpost.com/staff/email/thomas+e.+ricks/)
Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, September 11, 2006; Page A01
The chief of intelligence for the Marine Corps in Iraq recently filed an unusual secret report concluding that the prospects for securing that country's western Anbar province are dim and that there is almost nothing the U.S. military can do to improve the political and social situation there, said several military officers and intelligence officials familiar with its contents.
The officials described Col. Pete Devlin's classified assessment of the dire state of Anbar as the first time that a senior U.S. military officer has filed so negative a report from Iraq.

One Army officer summarized it as arguing that in Anbar province, "We haven't been defeated militarily but we have been defeated politically -- and that's where wars are won and lost."

Wait until the civil war is over before you make any judgement calls though.

Hmmmmm.... I would say that there is a civil war going on in Iraq right now regardless of what the Bush Administration would have us believe.

Not full blown, but there is definitely some sort of internal racial struggle happening.

This is coming from the Washington Post and most likely not a rumour spauned thingy from the web.

I always find it curious how "SECRET" documents are not that and being used as a political device.:hmm:

Exactly. But then you must also verify your source in that reporters seem to forget verifying their sources lately. Its evident in which one wrong thing propegates from paper to paper and then you get a public apology later on when it is found out from all the papers simultaneously. I don't trust much anymore without being able to verify the reporters results. The reason is - no paper wants to be left behind when the breaking of a new story happens.

What TV anchor just got axed in the last year or two by reporting falsehoods? Same thing there.

Remember that last scandal with the New York Times? Or how about the 60 minutes of falsehood chewed up and spit out by 60 minutes? Most news organizations seem to be going for the 'BIG' story these days regardless if the facts check out. NPR seems to be the only reliable news source left it would seem.

I don't know if it's true or not but I would say the Post would confirm before printing something like that.

Edit: Just read it. Sounds straight to me.

I trust the Washington Post less than most other publications. Its easy to find them implying or reporting complete inaccuracies. They suck as a paper.

Every organization on the planet has pages dedicated to refute specifically the Washinton Post - if that tells you anything. Here is one for the Red Cross:

http://www.redcross.org/news/ds/hurricanes/waporefutation102805.html

The White House of course will have one:

http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2005/11/20051113.html

One for the Redskins:

http://www.redskins.com/news/newsDetail.jsp?id=3141

Here are even other countries with pages:

How many examples do you want? THere are pages and pages of this stuff. Its pretty ugly.

Yes, but it doesn't make the story bs.

Some months ago there already was another "first" skeptical report from highest ranking officers in Iraq admitting serious doubts that they could win anything anymore, I linked to it back then, but forgot the details, now can't find that post. If anyone remembers it or has the link to that thread or that report, tell me, please. It must have been on the old board.
