What CPU do you have (socket type)? Do you want an SLI-capable board?

Gizzmoe,

From what I read, 993 socket. I'm not sure what SLI is.

Word is that the socket 775 Intel chipset mainboards (the 975 and the 965 chipsets, but don't "quote" me on that because it's been a decade since I last bought an Intel machine) which can handle the Core 2 Duo, will also be able to handle the Quad-Core Duo. The processor is basically just two Core 2 Duo processors on the same flip-chip, but it's still four physical processors, along with the hyper-threading virtual stuff.

Plus, the Core 2 Duo shows decent overclocking and significant performance improvements with current games. I guess Intel finally got their compliers pulled out of their arse and it really helps prevent cache misses in the pipeline.

So, I have been a Athlon/Opteron kid for a long, long time.......I'm kind of leaning toward the Core 2 Duo boards.

I personally have good experience with Asus. Far be it for me to actually become a brand-name fanboy, I have had poor experience with Gigabyte and Iwill, and excellent experience with Asus. So I'm going to recommend an Asus board, whatever you get; Athlon (socket 939) or Core 2 Duo.

Concerning chipsets, I do tend to shy away from VIA. I just have never really had good experience with their chipsets (the KT133, KT133A, KT400). If you go Core 2 Duo, get Intel chipsets. Preferably the 975.

Thanks All for your input.....it seems things are getting more complicated to make a choice. But also there are many choices now! :know:
