View Full Version : Time To Be Honest !!!
Time for HONESTY, Crew !!! Has Anybody... Ever... succeeded in 'passing' the Torpedo Attack Training Mission ?
I have run that fool thing for a week now.. I have been submerged/ surfaced/ broadside/ head-on/ DIW / Underway/ close / far.... NO, I am not running Grey Wolves.. just SH3 and the 1.4b patch.
I cannot...CANNOT, hit those damned ships. Close..'but no cigar'. I'm ready to accept what 'learning' I have acquired... accept my Not Satisfactory.. and move on.
But I sure am curious...............:damn:

Mm, well seriously, I think I just got really lucky. It frustrated me a lot so I turned down the realism to 0%. I don't remember what exactly I did.
Unless I didn't hold my tongue right when I installed the Game.. there ARE NO 'realism' settings for the Training Missions... That's why those silly little red/yellow/green triangles [instead of a True Solution]....
I didn't really mind the practice... my Real World sailoring was bobbing around ON the water! I just like to think that I can PASS something...:arrgh!:

Yes, I've passed them all, including the Torpedo Training. It's hard when the first one dodges the fish by accelerating. No, I haven't sunk them all, but it did say "Passed" (or "Completed" or whatever it is).
Good 'Nuff... Off to the next hurdle.. before I bunch this and GO NUKE

I've run the Academy each time I've started a new campaign. I've been able to get "Excellent" scores each time. The torp training is one of the easiest, topped only by the deck gun training.:arrgh!:

Of course you could always go to the file it's stored in and give yourself 1500 renown for passing the Academy. I don't remember where it is, though (can't look at my game)...
I'd never accuse a Down-Easter of blarney... but from MY quarter-deck, 'easiest'..isn't even spellable !!!
I can not remember it was so, so long ago.

Even at realism 0%, I never got anything better than average.
Something is amiss when the training mission is harder than anything in the game itself:p.
Where are you guys getting Realism Settings for the Training Missions ? Hey, STEED, everybody is a 'boot' once...;)

I also run the Academy each time I start a new campaign. Each time its been "Excellent" scores. I dont leave the missions till every thing is either sunk or shot down.

I gave my T1 torps TIV properties and I hit everything now...including myself sometimes. :yep:

I made sure I passed ALL of the training missions with "excellent" marks, because somebody mentioned somewhere that if you do it once, then ALL your careers will enjoy a higher prestige starting point

My Docs/SH3/Naval Academy.log ??? Think you have to change something in basic.cfg too. Been a long time since I mucked about those files.

Is that the one where you start off in the middle of 4 ships, one each to the North, South, East & West? IIRC, it took me 2 tries to do it, but I did manage to sink all the merchants.

I've allways come home with a broom lashed to the periscope!:arrgh!:
I have no problem sinking any of them in the training. I'm not sure why it could be causing problems with others

"I reprogrammed the computer and changed the parameters of the test. Earned a commendation for original thinking."
I've done it sinking all ships 74% realism (that's the setting for the career anyway).
I fired one fish at every target as quickly as possible, waited a couple of minutes, then blew ballast, flank speed. Finished them off with UZO attacks from shorter range. IIRC the tanker was the fastest but he's a decoy, you should get the cargoes first, BUT you have to hit the tanker once so at least he's taking some water, on his way. Then you have to rush back and you need some luck that he's still around. If you go for the tanker first it's trickier IMO, because by the time you catch him the rest are ALL further.

"Practice Makes Perfect" lol :know:
Just use the auto-aim and keel shots. Pretty easy that way.

For the trainning mission, I passed but it was quite difficult. I torped everyone as soon as possible, only one fish per ship. Usually, that stops them. Once you score a hit, then surface and approach another target. I got lucky with the first shot to the tanker. Target the C2 cargo, the steamer and the tanker first, then go for the others before they are too far away.
When you get to the farthest one, sink him and finish the others on surface.
It worked for me!

I did, but only at something around 70% realism. I haven't tried it with the GW mod. Then again I don't think I want to lol.

Are we talking about sinking all the ships? I've never done that, but I have sunk all but one before with GW.

I made it through all of the training missions, and get just over 1500 starting renown with every new career.
I did not achieve an excellent result on each mission, notably the Flak, and perhaps the Convoy mission as well.
They weren't that difficult at 72% realism (I use 79% in careers). The torpedo mission is perhaps one of the more challenging since the ships start moving once the first torpedoes have hit, but hey: that's why you can train it a few times before taking the exam!
Kind regards,
Eichenlaub
The hard ones are deck gun and AA gun with GW mod

AA wiyh GW for sure!:damn:
Passed them all exelent but after many many tries , especially the torp one and the one with the deck-gun .
You can , I think change difficulty in the naval acc by changing it in the career.
I think it's because difficulty is maybe stored somewhere in the my documents folder ,and not the game folder itself , because ,well ,of the fact you can change naval acc difficulty by altering the carrer one , and also because I have noticed changing realism settings for one of my installs changes it the same for all the other ones...

After doing a clean reinstall of SHIII to try out the Grey Wolves super mod, I found myself having to do the Academy missions again (BEFORE aplying GW), and I now see what you mean. Since I had no interest in learning anything from the academy, but rather just get my 1,500 renown back I went ahead a played it without upping the realism setting, and I now understand what you where trying to say.
SOLUTION TO YOUR PROBLEM: "PUT THE GAME IN MANUAL TARGETING"
The computer is totaly useless for figuring out targeting soultions, and letting it do it for you almost guarantees that your torpedoes will make near-misses all the time... specialy the costal merchant that tends to speed up and/or slow down every time you fire at it.
