View Full Version : English Channel Mined?
Ok, so I'm patrolling in AN82(just off the east coast of England)when I sight a large cargo approaching from the SW(English Channel). I'm about 3000m away and in position for a torp attack when the ship just breaks up all of a sudden and sinks.
Went to external view...no aircraft, nothing in sight. So maybe another uboat is also in the vicinity but out of sight.
I cruise on(towards english coast) and about four hours later I am damaged. Hull integrity is 98%, both engines destroyed, all compartments damaged somewhat.
I was at periscope depth, didn't run aground, no ships/aircraft present...did I hit a mine?
Did the ship I was stalking and I both hit mines?
Running GW 1.1a. :)

If your anywhere near Dover in the channel yes its mines
The ship should have been ok as IIRC they will be around 10m below the surface to stop you :rotfl: and other subs
Maybe they not that deep :hmm:

If your at periscope depth and you hit the external ship key{.} or {,} you won't see any aircraft--just whatever ships are in the water. I had a similar thing happen to me--(merchant destroyed-no other boat around on external cam while I was submerged)---but, when I surfaced the ju-88 (leaving the scene) showed up on the external ship key even though i couldnt spot it myself from the bridge. could be what happened with your destroyed merchant. your sub damage was probably a mine in the area you described.

No they aren't very deep. Way early in the war while on the west coast of England we hit a mine. We were surfaced and doing 8kts. It was at the end of a frustrating patrol and thought we might do a bit of harbour raiding just to sink something. Needless to say, that was the end of my harbour raiding days. Limped into base and swore to never try that again. :rotfl:

I was trying to pass through the English Channel on my current patrol. After I passed something like 7 DDs and PTs at periscope depth, the patrols must have picked me up and gathered around an area 5 nm behind my position. As I was laughing at them for looking for me in all the wrong places, my crew reports damage, and my boat was going down. Turns out my fuel tank was destroyed, and I lost all my fuel in a matter of seconds. Radio/hydrophone room soon got flooded all the way to the ceiling, while lots of other equipment were destroyed. My best men on repair detail were unable to control the flooding.
My periscope was up, and there's no way a DD somehow got my position without me knowing. It must have been a mine.
I tried the same thing again, with similar effects. I probably will never go to the entrance to the Channel again. Those mines are devastating. One will usually do the job.

I have witnessed ships (East coast of England) being sunk by mines (cheated and used external cam to go to the scene to have a 'look see' ). I have also been damaged by mines off the East coast but only whilst being at PD and not on the surface. :yep:

During my first(an dhtis far only) raid on Dover I didn't have a idea about mines in the game. I got a chock when I read somewhere that Dover has lots of mines around the port:o I must have been very lucky, since I didn't hit on,e it was bloody dark and I didn't see anything either. But I'd really like to see a mine some day(but, not very keen on getting to close). Is it only if you hit the mine it explodes, or does it have magnetic sensors (or something:hmm: ) that explodes if you get like 3 meters away, or what?

Some mines were magnetic some were contact
Not sure mag ones are modelled in game but I suspect they are probably both on the same mine - mag and contact

Hmmm.....better be careful then:D
I know there some mines around Gibraltar, but I'm not stupid enough (or good) to go in there.
I've seen mines around Reykjavik, but they were pretty weird: they were lying on the seafloor, no cables or anything! Looked like that harbour bug that makes ships being placed on docks, so they're allready destroyed when you sneak in.
Anyone seen this too?

May be that or the fact their depth is set too low
