View Full Version : Teenagers often ignore people's feelings
Your telling me, I remember asking a teenager if she could move as I wanted to get by her on a full bus, I will not repeat what she said. She used very strong language with very strong remarks. :nope:
Study: Feelings matter less to teenagers
Big News Network.com
Thursday 7th September, 2006 (UPI)
British researchers at University College London say teenagers often ignore people's feelings and even fail to think about their own feelings before acting.
The scientists say teenagers today, when considering a course of action, seldom use the area of their brain that's involved in thinking about other people's emotions and thoughts.
Scientists say they've discovered that, when making decisions about what action to take, the medial prefrontal cortex -- a region of the brain associated with higher-level thinking, empathy and guilt -- is under-used by teenagers. Instead, an area of the brain, involved in perceiving and imagining actions, takes over.
Sarah-Jayne Blakemore of UCL's Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience said: The fact that teenagers under-use the medial pre-frontal cortex when making decisions about what to do implies that they are less likely to think about how they themselves and how other people will feel as a result of their intended action.
The study was presented Thursday in Norwich during the Festival of Science, sponsored by the British Association for the Advancement of Science.

STEED, foul mouths are the least of your concerns. Teenagers today and the next generation will bring up euthanasia for retired elders as a magical solution to many of their problems (pensions, medical costs, waste and benefits from recycling bodies like Nazis did).
Anyway, Europe used to be a place where elders were respected. Here's an advice: start learning Japanese.

Maybe I should start working on getting citizenship for multiple nations (jump from nation to nation so nobody can really tie me down long enough to stick me with a needle).
To be fair there are many teenagers who do not act so selfishly and carelessly.
And there are more than enough adults who do.
The problem is here in the U.K. they are on the increase, it's getting ugly out there people stay in and lock the door.

I totally agree, a lot of teenagers in the UK are out of control and roam the streets like packs of wolves. I put it down to lack of discipline in the home which is not rectified at school. If a teacher lays a finger on a kid they are suspended from their job, possibly arrested for assault and finally sacked.

STEED I don't know what part of the UK you are in but aren't you exagerrating a little bit re locked doors.. I do agree that teenagers are more foul mouthed and rude even compared to when I was a teenager and that is only about 12 years ago.
I think studies like this shouldn't be reported as it is now another excuse amongst young people to behave how they like regardless. We are living in the "it's not my fault I can't help it" generation.
Even in Russia I'd say teens still respect elder people. Of all the countries I have visited I think UK people are the most selfish and consumerist even more so than in the US. In fact all though people might not believe me I find US teenagers on the whole polite and respectful to their elders, more so than here.
Hey Steed are you not aware that the sperm count is falling in Western Europe? Also look what's happened in japan, falling birthrate, in fact the Japanese government are so concerned they have brought in Dating Agencies for people to meet and have more babies.

One thing that has gone along way to increase this problem is PC Madness which is every where you go. Captain Nemo, your right about the schools I heard about a teacher who was about to place a aid-band on a child's cut knee, and was told to stop and ring the parents up. Madness in our schools and with the end of the Caine and slipper There is no discipline any longer.

I agree with Noob! I am not a teenager and I'm not old yet, so I am somewhere in the middle. But I think that it is normal for kids to rebel and do things their way. You older folks had your fun times. Smoking grass, doin shrooms, dancing naked under the moonlight high as a bunch of kites, rebelling against the government, creating and spreading STD 's like wild fire for the rest of the world for generations to have to worry about. I'd say that your childhood days were about the craziest of them all.
Today's kids can't get away with crap. They just want to be unique and have their own thing. I think it's a good thing that it's this way or the world would never change. I'd say more people from different cultures, at the same age levels, agree on more than any of your generation ever did, simply because of the Internet and the ability to voice concerns to one another and share common interest. This Internet thing could be the first steps to world peace someday. It's just been years of "obsolutism" from each culture that has spread negative rumors about one another to make their own seem like it's the "right one", that has led to all this war nonsense and violence.
So the Noob is right on this, because he IS in that category of being young and he's told you how he feels. You take your old beliefs and carry them with you the rest of your life and knock down anyone else's that comes close to challenging yours because that's how you were raised and brought up.
What can YOU do about todays kid STEED? Is even more forceful means really necessary to have your way? I say let the kids live and learn for themselves. It's all about exploration at that time in their lives so why not let them have their fun?
If you truely can't stand the bad language close your ears and pay no mind to it. If it's directed at you, simply state that you are old and you don't like to hear such things. Maybe the kid(s) doing it will take that into consideration?
Times ara changin, get with it or lock yourself in your house. It's your choice!
What can YOU do about it STEED?
I am not the government.
In my day you did not go around armed to the teeth with knifes and stab to death people you took a dislike too. How times have changed and not for the better. Don't get me wrong teenagers can not be blamed outright, society has to except it's responsibility as well.

That's my point STEED! You can't do anything about it. If you could what would you do? If your were the government. Do you really think tighter control on them would be better? I think that would just make things worse and cause even more violence to spread. People don't like to be forced to do things. They like to do things for themselves. This is why it's important to let the kids be who they are. You might find the freaky hair to be offensive or ugly, but to other kids they find it cool and unique. I admit that their are some really freaky ones, but who am I to judge? I used to have spiked hair in grade school after all. I even had a rat tale once! I let it grow half way down my back too. I dyed my hair in high school from brown to bleach blonde and had a messy spike with hair gel. I had my left ear peirced and wore a lot of Metallica and Guns & Roses t-shirts also. I was quite a punk I suppose.:hmm: I used to have a comb that looked like a switch blade. Yeah, I was a real threat to the world!:rotfl:
Actually STEED, I was just a kid and trying to fit in with my pals! It was just the thing to do and if you didn't then you were a nobody. Kids like to show off and this will never stop. Adults just need to face it and accept it for what it is. Your kids obviously don't want to grow up to be just like you and this hurts you because you think that you were or are perfect just as everyone does. What a shock it is when you find out it's not true :damn:

I'd be interested to know what areas of the city these attacks took place in, what time and between who. I'd like to hazard a guess that the attacks are between rival groups or chavs on the same estate. Please stop making out like it is endemic on every street in the UK and that you are going to get knifed just for walking down the street. Like anywhere else it depends on where you are and what you are doing. Use your head and you'll stay out of trouble.

youth culture is dead...maybe thats what's annoying them so much...everything they do think say has all been done before inumerable times and better...the birth rate drops people live longer....youth culture has become a product sold like any other mundane commercail transaction...they no longer have the creativity or desire to invent their own....sounds silly perhaps but they are rebelling against rebellion which has got to be irritating and a contradiction in terms..it doesn't matter any more...
young people have a constant need to appear adult yet they despise adults...must be a real head-ache that one lol
i was involved in youth culture as i grew up right through-out the punk era tho i wasn't a punk i was a biker ..long hair beard the usual thing..post punk new wave was fine stuff -- now i am in my fortys i had expected seriously to be jealous of youngsters..wondering what would be happening...but youth culture has become a hollow box looks great nothing inside.. all packaging nothing substantail to be discovered..i'm not jealous...im just glad i haven't got kids....it must be real difficult to rebel against the generation that came up with Soiuxie and the Banshees....Rush...Roxy Music ..the sex pistols..ACDC even Saxon (gawd bless 'em) i didn't rebel against the generation that came up with Hendrix.. Led Zep..the Gratefull Dead..Joni Mitchell
makes you wonder what it is they are trying to rebel against..?
all they've managed to come up with so far is to play music with a post ironic grin ..a smug detachment...a vague impersonation...
advertisers don't use youth culture music for adverts any more...(a recent trend than has equally recently died)
some one asked my why the other day..best i could come up with having decided to think about it..was that it had no real honest emotional bite....no hairs on the back of the neck..music without honesty is just clever sound..and you can't be honestly post ironic..it's a contradiction in terms again..

Your telling me, I remember asking a teenager if she could move as I wanted to get by her on a full bus, I will not repeat what she said. She used very strong language with very strong remarks. :nope:
Study: Feelings matter less to teenagers

Yep i can believe that.
Heh! I once broke my toe - walked into the dumbbells lying on the floor one night when heading to the toilet .lol. I totally disjointed it the toe was pointing in the opposite direction and the pain i endured for two days before i finally saw a doctor was unbeliable how could a small part of my body such as a friggin toe give so much pain. I knew pain previously ive had broken two ribs, elbow and risk. But the toe was the worse pain ever.
Mentioned this to my son and he looks at me eyeball to eyeball and says "Dad harded up, anyone would think you broke your neck the way you go on about it" :rotfl::rotfl:I never mentioned a word about it again...;)
