View Full Version : The video hunt: basic techniques shown

Dantenoc
09-04-06, 04:14 AM
A video of me playing SHIII on 100% realism setting, illustrating some techiniques for tracking the enemy and setting up a perfect firing solution.

Edit: Ok, I think I have it figured out

There are three parts:
Using the 3:15 rule with help from the watch officer
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkYI8z7LtkA
Using the hydrophone to update the contact on the navmap
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WtFY7nMD-sw
And then end, which is just basically the enemy being sunk (allthough not in the best way)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANFuNe9Mrz4

All these techniques are well known by the pro's but there wasn't a video about them.

Alternatively, you can download them from file front here:
http://hosted.filefront.com/dantenoc

Oh, blah, I'd love to see the full video if possible please. Got a FTP site or maybe upload it to one of the larger places like FileFront?

Hey, Dantenoc, I have several 9 minute videos at youtube, and they are all 30-40 megs. You dont need to use all the allowed 100 megabytes since the video-window is really small.

I had to cut the very end of the film so as to not exceed the 100 meg limit on U-tube, but trust me, the ship did go down.
We don't trust you.Do you have a screeny of that sinking ship:lol::lol:

Oh my god, thank you so much for this!! I finally understand how to use the watch officer and sonarman to figure out where a ship is!! And the medium/short range definitions are invaluable.

Thanks a lot!:p:rock:

:yep: That is great tutorial!
However,if you're using NYGM TW is not applicable.
First:-the range given to you by the WO is removed,as historycally he could not give you precise range, just short-medium-long range. He could use the UZO to find a more precise range, but with the more realistic visual AI in TW you will be spotted in day light by the time you get close enought to find a goog reading on the mast.
Second:historycally,an U-boat coul be trimmed to a neutral buoyancy only for a short period of time.So that's why TW uses the "anti humming bird" mod, wich will make the sub sink slowly if dont keep at least 1-2 knt.So it gets harder to just sit and wait for the target to get in front of you,to gain the perfect firing solution.
Other than that, the tutorial is full of invaluable information, like te short-medium-long range on sonar......

All it needs is a running commentary to explain what's going on. You move so fast Danotec sometimes it's hard to remember what you're doing:p.

It does have a commentary, allthough not a very good one since the game's noise sometimes drowns mi voice out, specially when standing on the bridge.... try turning the volume up more for now, but next time (if there is one) I'll try to speak up more into the mic.

Videos saved from YouTube are flash videos and can be played with FLV Player (http://www.martijndevisser.com/blog/article/flv-player-updated). One of the reasons I suggested posting the files themselves to FileFront or something, so it would be easier to download and play. :)

Thanks for the info kylania. Tryed useing the FLV Player (http://www.martijndevisser.com/blog/article/flv-player-updated) but it would not work i think my only hope is that someone will beable to upload them to filefront or some other site.
It is a shame as this what i have been looking for. As it is just what i need to help me learn manual TDC.

Did you rename the files with a .flv extension?

If you're using Firefox (that everyone should be using due to Internet Exploder's gaping security holes) there's an extension called videodownloader that can be used to DL vid files:

you may be missing a codec...download a small (free) programme called GSPOT (from CNET.com) and run it passed/through that...it will identify what codec it is using...then, if that is the reason, download the latest appropriate codec from CNET and hopefully that will solve your problem

Tryed adding the flv extension to the file but it only works for five seconds then stops complete mystery to me:hmm:

this is great, i use all your techniques and strategies and they always work. Thanks

oh and i also have that problem with taking down a ship with one torpedo, its strange, i can sink a tanker with one torpedo, but a c2 or c3 takes 3-4 :damn:

How 'bout uploading a second version with subtitles?

I guess I could add subtitles to the current one without too much trouble, if it's OK to you.

I know the are others who would benifit from it.

yeah cargos are a b*** to sink
I found out that hitting them on various spots works better. I go for 1st bellow the smoke stack 2nd one 10m before the bow and if needed the 3rd nail in the coffin goes in the middle of the ship (betwen 1st and 2nd shot)
But still- I once used 5 eals and the C2 was still afloat and GOING 10 knts- took another 10AP and 15 HE to take her down in the kingdom of davy jones

tankers on the other hand are easy in my experiance- 1 or 2 in the middle and they break in half or stay afloat but burning like a torch and later finish their life in a massive fireball:arrgh!:

Von, or anyone, perhaps you could upload a similar video that shows how to do this same process under the stricter limits of NYGM? I've really been trying to get the hang of that mod, and I just can't. :(

Great video, especially for one learning the business like me...
BUT the background noise from the engines is way too loud... It's hard to hear what you're saying half the time. There are parts I played over and over again and I still couldn't make out what you were saying and since I'm using this as a tutorial...

If you're having trouble following the videos you can take a look at Dantenoc's original forum post called The Hunt. It was basically the same thing, how to intercept a radio contact then actually plot the attack position and finish them off. It's pretty much required reading no matter what level of realism you play at. You can read the whole thing at the following URL, or print it out and use it daily like I do!

The Hunt: An illustrated example of how to sink a ship (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=88961)
