View Full Version : GW Mod fantastic but too slow :(

Downloaded and played the GW mod and it makes SHIII seem almost like new game! (superb work GW!) The only problem is it takes about 15mins (quite literaly) for each mission to start and each saved game to load. Also it can be slow at times during navigation.
Does anyone have any ideas how to speed up the performance (perhaps if say I just installed the bare minimum GW option, instead of the Das Boot music, Lighting etc).
Cheers,
ps I have 3 Ghz, 516Ram, 5800 Geforce 256 M card.
Bump yer Ram to 1 gig especialy if ye be runn'n XP,and if ye have some spare loot kick'n about, invest in GF 6800GT,its what I run and load times are reasonable.

*nod* WinXP uses 128 mb of ram from the get-go. Vista will be even more of a resource hog. :x Though I've heard the graphic eye candy can be turned off, if necessary.

I have 2 GB of RAM and GW loads really slow, both the game and especially missions. There's a few hiccups during high TC travel as well.
That said, it's fun and beautiful. :) Though I had AntiAliasing turned way up, I turned it off because it really makes some periscope and smoky scenes choppy. I need to turn it on again since map lines are all "stepy" but when I turned it OFF my PC crashed hard, powered right off.. so I'm afraid to turn it back on.
Its not just RAM, you need cpu power as well. As for the graphics cards, the nvidia 6800 and the medium 7000-series are rather cheap now.

Where do you get the Omega drivers? I've heard about them, but can't seem to find them. Also which version would be the best if more than one version is offerred?
Thanks in advance!

How does vista compares to XP? Should i install vista before running SHIV (when it comes). what do you guys suggest? Is Vista more "demanding" than XP considering RAM?:hmm:
I wouldn`t go for Vista before mid 2007, maybe they have removed most of the bugs by then. (Yes, optimistic)

Wow, I just installed these and it completely f'd up my machine. :( At first *all* video was scrambled and stuff, missing icons. Than I rebooted and for three more reboots had no video!! The monitor wouldn't even turn on. Bah.
@ stabiz: well, its microsoft..... :D Yeah, think i will wait until the bugs are gone!:shifty:
Xp er jo greit det, så lenge det ikke SHIV krever allverden av ressurser...
Eng: Xp is ok, as long as SHIV doesnt require extreme resources..

I'm way over 50. Maybe you youngsters can wait for Microsoft to remove the bugs but I don't think I have that amount of time left. :D Since when has anything Microsoft been bug free? ;)

Vista will take more ram and cpu away, that is for sure. (Og jeg tror ikke SH4 kommer til å være ekstremt krevende. Mer krevende, men ikke ekstremt)

Vista sucks.
Stick with XP Pro, wait till 2yrs down the road before buying vista like someone else said, by then all most of the bugs will be smoothed out.

Another thing to try is editing the port you use most.
You can open the Mission Editor then open the SCR.mis file.
Zoom in to the port you use and start eliminating things like 109 flyovers, extra ships in port etc. This reduces what is taking time to load and improved FPS when you start leaving on your patrol.
When you are done click "save as" and then add one thing to the name. Go to your Program files, UBI folder, SH3 folder, campaigns/campaign folder and remove the SCR.mis to a save outside folder and change your newly edtied SCR.mis file by eliminating that extra one thing you added to the name so it reads as the other one; SCR.mis.
Always back up but this way you can edit and try anything.
I added Brit PT boats after D-Day to St Nazaire and I must dive almost as soon as I leave the bunker. Which was typical
Just a thought!

I'd been running stock ATI 6.4 drivers on the ATI Radeon x850 Pro. I uninstalled my ATI Tool and ATI Control Panel per the Omega read me but not the drivers themselves, since the Omega said they would install over.
I installed ATI's 6.8 drivers and all appears well so far. :shifty:

It is recommended one always uninstalls video derivers before installing new one.
Not overwrite, as the super PC geeks insist!

There still removing the XP bugs. ;)
Just wait still they replace Vista by then all the bugs may have been removed.
The Omega drivers messed me up too. Spent three hours last night roaming around to fix the havoc.

Upgrading from 512M Ram to 1Gb makes a big difference to loading times and on TC (especially 1024). Thank you for the suggestion. I am considering upgrading to 1.5GB Ram but suspect the difference this would make wouldnt make it worthwhile. Any comments?
I have 1,5, and it made a difference.

well said that man !!
I would not get any O/S 1.0 version. Just wait a year or 18 months as it will save on so many upgrades. Even with XP SP2 we seem to get a patch every month
