Welcome Bunkerrat!
You can view the more mature Svastika discussion that went on in here http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=97486 . This sure is a better place for the real players and not some wannabe history professors trying to change history and get old salts banned....awaiting if I am getting the ban too after my last "contrubution" in the same discussion.

Well even if I am interested in the history of WW2 and Germany, I find the idolatry of nazi icons revolting as well, and I think people should refrain from using the swastika in conjunction with Germany and WW2 themed images. Such as seawolfs sig. Not necessary.

Wave the swastika around, expect controversy. It is viewed akin to heiling on Trafalgar square by some. Others just don't give a hoot.
Generally, you have a point. If you don't understand others don't expect to be understood.
BUT in context of this thread, what happened at UBI is totally different, you should read the posts there before commenting Immacolata. Basically that's a guy who is a troublemaker and hooked onto to the Nazi thing when he could'nt find anything else to annoy people with.

Idolatry of one national icon is as bad as another IMHO. The flag didn't commit any atrocities, only some pig headed people who served it.
I guess all I am trying to say is, that it doesn't bother me any more than any other flag in a game.
By the way, considering the swastika (crux gammata - if I recall correctly) is one of many variations of the "Christian" symbol (cross), anybody done any research into it's "heritage". I vaguely remember seeing it in ancient chinese artifacts, so perhaps it's history goes way back?

Hi and welcome aboard
Yes you are correct the swastica in different forms is an ancient symbol
Its the nazi version people object to
Its history and you cant rewrite it
Used in its correct enviroment - such as the flag and medals - is no problem in my eyes whatsoever
After all this is a ww2 subsim we are playing - as submariners as part of the nazi run armed forces

Immacolata: I do believe there is a huge difference between displaying an historically correct flag in one's signature in a WWII submarine simulation forum and marching down Trafalgar square waving the Reich's colours...
I wouldn't condone idolatry of course. The question remains: when is displaying such an item equal to idolizing it?
Don't forget that just about any flag "idolizes" something terrible: one could percieve the Dutch flag to symbolize colonialism in Southeast-Asia, the American flag to symbolize "Dollar imperialism", the Spanish flag could be tied to the oppressive rule of the Spanish Main and so on and on. Displaying any of these flags would then automatically become idolizing those crimes? I have to disagree.
Kind regards,
Eichenlaub
Einchenlaub: Hear hear!!:D
For crying out loud, its just a flag. The swastica is just some lines thats crossing each other.. I play SHIII with the flags and the swastica, and i have never hatet jews or other humans! The forums should allow symbols that are relevant to games, and i find it weird that ubi is so critical to this matter. Hey, they made a game where you exclusively sail around and promote the third reichs sinking of allied vessels! If we stop using those symbols, the next generation of people will forget the horror Hitler brought to the world... I guess everybody who is using the flag/swastica is aware of its darker side of history, and only sees this like a "game-issue" and not as some neo-nazi crap.
Actually, Swastika is formed by four 'L' letters. Not sure about the Nazi swastika, but the real swastika´s 'L'´s are Life, Light, Love and Luck.
Heck, there´s even a building that looks like swastika in San Diego! :o

I believe there was a copse of trees in some German forest that was sown in a swastica-shape by the nazis. A few years ago, it caused an uproar in Germany, since the trees were fully grown and stood out better than ever from the surrounding trees (of different kinds). I'm not too sure but I believe they've been cut down...
Politically correctness can be soooo bad.
Kind regards,
Eichenlaub
I was a moderator at Ubi but lost that for standing by people that had issues with their games. Then was permanently banned by a so called "friend" who's a moderator for expressing my views on another forum totally separate from Ubi. There is no freedom of speech UBi says on their forums, and the same goes for any forum that they look at where a Ubi member speaks their mind. They control whats said and written. Their CMs and moderators are worse than Orwell's "1984".
I now no longer peruse the Ubi forums, nor do I buy their products. And I've found there are more doing the same as I. Ubi will be their own downfall in the furture if they continue as they are....... that includes forums and use of invasive copy protection.
What gets me is the double standards used by Ubi.

you bet that waving the american flag in certain parts of the world will land you in trouble relatively fast. Or danish for that matter :D And yes, waving the particular flag in a Subsim forum can't REALLY offend me either, and if the board mods are fine with it, then lets just move on. But when people get banned from a forum - this or other, for that matter - for carrying such symbol in their sig, I say don't come crying because it is pretty controversial for starters. Show attitude, expect some lip.

Play a game based on realistically recreating u-boats from World War II and expect to see the swastika. Every example of it's use in the sigs questioned on the ubi boards were not idoltry, but simply secondary parts of a flag or medal here or there.
There was no "Sieg heil!!" attitude at all about it. Simply the displaying of accurate flags and medals as related to the u-boat captain not the national leader and his ideas that directed their goals.
There is no basic inherited human right not to be offended. Be over sensitive and unable to tell the difference between displaying a symbol and believing in a symbol, expect some to confront you about it.
Immacolata

Well, sometimes you find yourself at the end of "teh ban stick" when you confront people about their sensitivities I guess. Not enough to cry bloody murder, though.

...real swastika´s 'L'´s are Life, Light, Love and Luck.
I find that hard to credit, simply because the swastika far predates the English language, and those four words do not start with 'L' in most others.
Other than that, I agree with you completely.

Funny, there are still pictures and sigs displaying the swastica over at the SH3 forums?
Perhaps he was banned for another reason?
Naw, that would take away from his whole "I am a victom feel sorry for me " rant. He acted like a child when asked to change his oversized sig that had an oversized swastica in it.
He refused to do so and made a big deal out of it and started spamming the forums with his "fight the power" posts and after being asked nicely and politly to remove and change his sig (several times) and refusing to do so he was banned for a week.
Than he proceeded to log on to the forums with insulting usernames and using foul language.
This person deserved alot more than a one week ban be sure, if you guys want to feel sorry for this guy than go ahead, I wont.
I believe in accepting personal responsibility for your actions, something that is dead and dying in the world today.
Well, to come think of it. I dont remember any similar cases here on SubSim forums. Maybe it´s the UBI forum that makes people do things like this. :rotfl:

BR although the fourms will never be the same, our masave onslaut from us and a few others have drove him into hiding. I haveint seen a post since.
As for subsim, yes it is a good fourm but it lacks the political and OT threads that formed the Bonds in UBI.
I think it was more to do with some new forum member whining over being offended by swastikas. It really galled us veteran members there that some new goof comes along, into a forum for a game devoted to German subs in WW2 and then gets offended over Nazi imagery in game devoted to WW2. What a total twat! It had nothing to do with his sig line being over-sized. We've had several members recently who had to redesign their sigs because they were oversized and I recall no strife over that, no bans. It really brasses us off that we lose a valued and contributing member due to some idiot who contributes nothing to the game [never mind his painful to read butchering of the English language with his incomprehensible pidgin English.] He floods the forum with his inane and useless posts and his greatest feat in his time as a member is to get someone banned.
Hey, i posted the picture of the us naval base over the description, and now it is gone!!! What happend?

I chose to use the German battle flag (which has the swasika) in my sig since I like the design of the flag itself and it fits within the context of the game. One of the several off-shoots of playing SH3 has been reading and learning about U-boats, WWII and the flags of different nations. For example, did you know that only the flags of Oregon (US) and Paraguay have differing symbolism on their two sides? Though the only difference in the Paraguay flag are the central emblems.

btw, i'm one who started the 'swastika thread.' :smug:

Hi All - I'm new here, first post I think!
Some familiar faces here! :D Looks like the exodus has already started. :o
I have been on the UBI forum ever since I bought the game last year and I must admit I have on the whole enjoyed the forum with some interesting discussions on WWII and other OT subjects, it's great to help out those who have had problems with the game too. But I have become annoyed with some newcomers shooting off before getting more acquanited, you will not see that from me.
Besides this fellow who caused the big stink at UBI had a real nerve, complaining about the acts of those and trying to re-write history - oh brother! And the lunatic had the balls to make such sensless comments while playing a computer game based on WWII German Navy. It's a shame I was working at the time of the almighty kick off - I was denied my input becuase the said topic had been closed:nope:
Anyway I have had my say on the subject.

Funny.. I was just thinking the same thing.
One of the important rules here is that we don't allow ourselves to get into personal attacks... about people here or on other forums (fora?).
The UbiSoft forum has their rules, we have ours. Sooner or later someone is going to go off the rails here and we will have the same type of situation. I would like to think that the members of this forum wouldn't go running over there bad mouthing the Moderators here for simply doing their job.
Now... back to SH3.
