According to ZDnet ,Amazon has released prices for the new windows Vista that should be lounched next year.
Here they are
Windows Vista Home Basic - $199(full)/$99.95(upgrade)
Windows Vista Home Premium - $239/$159
Windows Vista Business - $299/$199
Windows Vista Ultimate - $399/$259
What do the other captains think about this?

Thats about the normal prices for microsoft OS's, I remeber when WindowsXP pro came out it was alot of money as well. I dont think Vista will be that great tho, its more a facelift with nice glassy interface graphics and a few patch ups from winxp problems. I actually think it will be a letdown out of all the OS's to come out. Windows2000 with service pack 3 for me is the best OS from Microsoft, I have win2k running on my second PC and it plays SH3 better than winxp - crash wise. Then XP came out with a ladi da facelift and a 100 patchup's to follow. Best thing to come out of winxp from win2k is winxp is more gaming friendly. But unless your patched winxp for the 100th time and update your IE your just a target on the net otherwise.

If Linux was as gamer friendly as windows how many would drop windows in a instance. I would. But whats the point for me having Linux on my PC when i can't play games, no point installing linux and only use it for email/internet, unless your running a website.

The compatibility issues frighten me. I'm having an unsettling experience right now just to think of it.

I'll have to buy a new PC just to run Vista and DirectX 10 and keep this one for everything else. :damn:   :x   :dead:

A graphics processor that is DirectX 9 capable.Windows Vista Premium Ready PCs
To get an even better Windows Vista experience, including the Windows Aero user experience, ask for a Windows Vista Capable PC that is designated Premium Ready, or choose a PC that meets or exceeds the Premium Ready requirements described below. No plans over here to buy Vista at release date or in the 1-2 years after that. none of the fewer and fewer sims and strategy games i am interested in could benefit from it, or need it. So, why should I play beta-tester for the next two years, and remain unpayed? Vista is too obviously focussing on the eye candy side of life. That a highend graphic card is needed to use it's visual options is not an argument for but against it.

I need a bit of up grading which I will be looking into early next year mainly so I can run SH4. I hope SH4 will not be vista that I am dreading apart from that little worry, I too will not bother just seems like a lot of gloss with a lot of patching needed so what's new there. ;)

I'm currently holding out to upgrade my PC til after the first few series of DX10 compatible video cards come out.
Cause I'm buying FSX and it's designed aroung Vista/DX10 so I'll look to be getting Vista for that upgrade, but MS OS's are always expensive and I can see myself going "ouch" when a look at getting it :stare:

But by that time a few people from work will have had Vista for a while and I can query them on how it goes.

Yea -I bought my GF6600GT with 250$ for God's sake.I'm also not going to upgrade immediately , wait a bit untill patches or SPs come out and prices get a bit lower.
I'm not worried about hardware ,my computer can take Windows Vista fine (15GB instalation kind of scares me but I can deal with it ) .
I might consider getting a new MB and CPU (but not now ,in a year or so ,because now you can't get a lot more than I have and I'll wait untill more powerful ones come out. Also, might buy a DX10 card if all works well...but gonna have to start saving up cash:( )

I've had them before. It's usually when I try and run some particular old DOS games for some reason.

I have. Quite a few times. For some reason I get a BSOD everytime I try to start the computer in Safe Mode. I gotta be careful, because if anything happens and I need to go to Safe Mode I'm SOL.

Well most of us will eventually have Vista. It's just a matter of when. And we'll all find out soon enough how good or bad it is once it's released to the public.

I'm not going to be "upgrading" to Vista. I am planning on buying a Wii and continue gaming as a consoler. I've already disconnected all my Windows computers from the internet, and I haven't managed to get UT2004 working with Suse, so I'm out of multiplayer games, too.

As more and more Digital Rights Management components fall into the market, I'm planning on just getting out of gaming. I've stopped watching Hollywood movies for several years, and the only music I listen to is classical or soundtracks, so I'm basically out of "music" as well.

All in all, I am walking on that path, too. I could imagine that my next system is a simple laptop for internet exclusively, and Words, Chess, some very old hex-strategy (if my interest survives that long), some minor digital picture processing.

Since years I am told by computer-prophets and Linux-lovers that the gaming scene is short of a major brakethrough with regard to linux releases. and since as long I answer that is wishful thinking. Like the superior Video 2000 stood no chnace versus VHS, Linux as a platform for major companies doing game releases for it on a standard basis is fighting a lost battle. Microsoft is too far ahead in market shares, it has become THE standard. Only a major catastrophe with Microsoft, a total security desaster, a brakedown of computer nets around the globe, some very serious events that leaves MS seriously hurt, could change the situation substantially.

In this sense, let's hope for the worst.

it isnt about one point and you can get any game for linux too. its about that there are several games coming and taking some time, more and more are out. as the game engines are platform independent, its easy possible to bring out games on different platforms, like pc (win, mac, lin) and consoles (xbox, playstation). for example from
http://www.unrealtechnology.com

windows isnt the only big player in game market, there is also the playstation.
i hope the simulation fraction is also going to switch to platform independent. wait the usa is on that way too. ;)

I don't remember if it was here or on another forum but I seem to remember being suggested to stay away from this Windows overhauls, as they can potentially make Windows unstable or have side effects for a variety of apps, including games.

Anyone know or recall anything like this?

No they are fine. Ive had StyleXP since version 1.0 (its now v3.19) and they have never slowed down my PC there is an option to turn off StyleXP from using system resources if your PC lacks ram, but even on a PC with low ram as 512mb she will be okay.

As for the Transformation pack thats a risk the user will have to take. It does make changes that could break windows - the creator does warn you before you start. But ive had no problems with it.

Style XP is safer.

Well, if you save a $1 dollar a day for a year = $365 US, then you could almost get the ultimate professional edition of Vista. :hmm:

Doesn't sound too hard to do. Go buy or build a cheap piggybank and put a dollar a day into it or more. Or if you get payed every two weeks, put in 14 dollars into the pot to adjust for a dollar a day. In one year you will have enough money to buy Windows Vista and a game or two. Maybe three or four?:hmm: Depends on which edition of Vista you want.
