Feeling peckish? British council bans biscuits to beat the birds

LONDON (AFP) - They are an integral part of British tea-time, but councillors in one city are having to forgo biscuits with their daily cuppa to deal with the growing problem of aggressive seagulls.
Bristol City Council in the west of England has calculated it could save 25,000 pounds (37,000 euros, 47,500 dollars) a year if it axed the mammoth amount of biscuits staff munch at meetings and official hearings.
The money could then be used to finance a scheme to curb the city's soaring seagull population by dipping the birds' eggs in oil so they do not hatch.
Deputy council leader Steve Comer came up with the idea while he was probing the local authority's catering budget and a colleague was looking into the oil-dipping trial.
"The cost of the scheme was around 30,000 pounds and I said, 'I think I've found 25,000' -- by axing the biscuits," he said.
"It just seems like a luxury we can do without."
More than 2,000 pairs of seagulls are thought to be living in Bristol city centre, where there is a plentiful supply of fast food litter for them to feast on. Numbers are estimated to rise by 17 percent a year.
The gulls are notoriously noisy -- particularly during the mating season -- and produce large quantities of droppings. There have also been reports of seagulls dive-bombing people after the chicks hatch to protect their territory.

Steed,

I think you should create your very own anti-PC party.

As for the actual story, words cannot describe.

oh hell....."Put your hands in the air and step away from the biscuit... citizen"

oh hang on...i actually thought about this..(very dangerous i know -very un PC)

seagulls generaly fly out side of major buildings....AFAIK...
tea and biscuits are generaly consumed in the interior of buildings..canteens offices etc etc..

fast food (ie big buisness) is frequently consumed in the seagulls natural habitat (no not the store) ie outside..generaly speaking seagulls prefer the exterior of buildings than the interior ..more room to fly about i would guess is the general reasoning behind their preference and the lack of ability to open doors..

so...this is just another scheme to cut costs at the expense of workers...

leaving the real source of the problem ie macdonalds and the like...untouched and free to go about their buisness as they wish..

remember that old WW2 veteran lady who was charged with littering her local park with her sandwich "debris"??
on the logic that it attracted rats...?

and of course reducing the seagull population is easier than reducing the number and frequency of fast food outlets...

of course reducing the number and frequency of fast food outlets would have the knock on effect of reducing the tendency for folks to consume highly fattening produce...which aparently is one of the governments "prioritys"..

not at the expense of commercail concerns of course...

so ban the biscuits....pretend it's to prevent seagull attacks..

and every ones happy....happy yes i read about that once in a book....think they must have burnt that particular book..
we are all consumables to big buisness...they consume our money our health and finally our lives...

come the revoloution first against the wall bop bop bop...

What are you guys complaining about? The City Council no longer offers free biscuits to their staff, they save 25000 pounds a year and put the money into fighting seagulls, which apparently have a become quite a nuisance. So where is the problem? And what does it have to do with political correctness???

Gizzmoe, here's the answer (It's a British saying)

something takes the biscuit - a stupidity that evokes surprise

I didn't mind her borrowing my jeans, but stealing me underwear - well, that just about takes the biscuit!
