Well I am going bald, the old bald patch is coming on nicely and sooner or later time to chop it all off and go for the Kojak look.

Mice might provide the reason for baldness

Big News Network.com

British scientists say they may have discovered why some people are hairier than others, as well as new information about baldness.

The University of Manchester team has discovered the molecular processes that decide which embryonic skin cells will form into hair follicles, determining the body's hair pattern.

The findings in mice will be of interest to scientists looking at male-pattern baldness, but have more direct implications for people who suffer from ectodermal dysplasia -- a range of conditions in which skin cells fail to develop into other tissue, including hair follicles.

During human development, skin cells have the ability to turn into other types of cells to form hair follicles, sweat glands, teeth and nails, said Dr. Denis Headon, who led the research. Which cells are transformed into hair follicles is determined by three proteins that are produced by our genes.

The team found that cells given the genetic command to become hair follicles will send out signals to neighboring cells to prevent them from doing likewise, so producing a specific hair pattern.

The research ... could provide clues as to why follicles shrink and hair growth diminishes in certain men as they get older, said Headon.

I'm 46 and still have a very full head of hair which still grows very quickly, unfortunately. As I get older, it seems my hair grows quicker in other places as well, like my nose, ears and eyebrows.:x

Sometimes I wish I was bald. It would be a lot less trouble.:yep: But I don't think being bald has anything to do with the hair on the rest of your body.

Oh, by the way, is there any truth to whether or not someone can go bald or lose hair growth by wearing a cap or hat all the time?

Dont worry bout going bald, i presume your head is always dry? meaning not oily my head is always oily lol i could grow an oil field on my head if left for a month. I have oily head and oily olive skin. Yet i think thats why im not bald, the drier your scalp the more likely your go bald.

Number 1 haircuts rock anyways so get out the hair clippers!:arrgh!:

If you have hair that is long enough (and a solid color, no dyes, bleached hair, or gray hair) you can cut it and donate it to cancer patients.

I did my first cut about 3 weeks ago got 10 inches of hair and went from a full-out ponytail to a crew-cut.

Good thing my name matches my Drivers License, else ppl will think I killed the old me and I'm an imposter trying to usurp his place!!

I do not know if it's true or not, but you might have a point there. I also have an oily head, and I have the same hairline since I was young and with no sign of getting higher (speaking of the hairline).:D

I am thirty years old and still have baby hair growing all over my head, proof that I will not go bald anytime soon ;-)

Humph :shifty: , well as my Grandad (father's side who went bald in his 20s like me, my Dad went bald later and has more fuzz on top than me  ) said, too much brain pushes hair out, or a variation "grass doesn't grow on a busy street." :arrgh!:

Seriously, genetics is a big factor. This dry skin thing, I have dry skin, so I wonder if it is linked in fact. :hmm:

I'd always thought it was something genetic that you'd inherited on the maternal side. :hmm: But I really have no idea. My hair is of the dry variety (not dandruff level dry, but not far off) and has been slowly thinning at the temples for the last few years, but not noticably so other than to me (I'm in my early 30s). My dad was bald by the time he hit 40, I'm hoping to escape the same fate since I'm not into the shaved head + goatee look that's become the fad among those with receeding hairlines (though its a big step up from the 80s comb over ).

I'm bald as well - strong genetic component there.

I was told once that men who are bald on the front of their heads are great thinkers; men who are bald on the backs of their heads are great lovers; and men who are bald on the front and back of their heads think they're great lovers.

Look on the bright side - we bald guys are the first to know when it starts raining. ;)

I started thinning im my mid-twenties and I started buzzing my head when I was 28. It was strange in the beginning, but people got used to it quickly. I have never thought about toupees, medicines etc. I`m just as happy with little hair as I was with dark curls:yep:
