View Full Version : GW1.1: Large Tanker weakest spot, best hit location ?
Salute !
I've tried engine room mostly and it's random. Sometimes it does kill it, but mostly immobilises. The 1-2 metres between engine room and fuel bunker are usually a critical hit but that space is hard to hit, unless in ambush. I've killed one from 3.5 kms with a 9m depth/impact T1 to the keel, but that also does not always guarantee a kill.
If using 2 fish in the first attack, simultaneous salvo:
engine room + fuel bunker = destroyed (high probability)
engine room + center tower = destroyed (high probability)
engine room + forward bow = sunk (very high probability)
engine room + forward half = sunk (100%)
3 fish salvo in any combimnation of above = destroyed (99% probability)
I''m trying to find the weakest spot which will most of the time, guarantee a kill with one torp. Not sure but I think this is a ship which in the majority of cases may not go down with one torp, but rather with two, sometimes even 3 (!!!).
This is a high value target in my play style hence I'm trying to find out the best way to kill it.
Anyone know what is the best location to kill the Large Tanker with one torp, GW1.1 ?
Thanks in advance !
I usually hit them right below the keel in the middle of the ship and that does it most of the times. Also, hittinh the fuel-room might make the ship explode...
But most of the time ,like you pointed out yourself,2 shots will sink it -engine room + forward or aft section ,or forward+aft section.
Thanks for the reply. I'll try the keel shot again. Have'nt tried it very often, must admit.

With Large Tankers I usually fire just one torpedo at first, with magnetic trigger set to 1 metre beneath the keel, and aim for just behind the forward bridge area. This will almost certainly cause enough damage to stop her in her tracks, if she doesn't break her back. if still afloat, one more eel with impact trigger set to around 4 metres fired at the engine room / fuel bunker area should send her to the bottom, with a nice fireworks display for your crew to enjoy!!;)
Obviously, if it's a convoy situation with escorts hanging around, it pays to fire off both torps together, with only a 8-10 second gap between, before getting the h*ll out of there!
Tankers can be really tough. In Das Boot, they shoot one tanker up and hit it's oil tanks.Fuel starts to leek on the water and it ignites-a horrible blaze covering the whole ship.6 hours later after evading the convoy escorts, they returned to the tanker. It was still burning, and still floating with no real problems. They shot it one more time with a torp, and then it finally sank.
You guys are using GW 1.1 right ?
Nice story from Das Boot, need to watch that again (8 hour version!)
Yep GW 1.1 and NYGM user myself...but the use the same damage system for now.
And about DB-holy smokes 8 hours?I have to settle with the 3 h 20 m Director's Cut version:(

You forgot to mention the ugly buisness of the "survivors".

Erm...yes...but we were talking about the resistance of the ship itself and not the crew. But on a side note I don't really understand why the captain didn't want to save those poor guys.

Uboats were forbiden to pick up survivors after the Laconia incident
It was pretty much frowned on before though they would give assistance if possible

Didn't know about the incident.Thought the captain was affraid that the people would see a lot of things inside the boat and could perhaps tell the info to the brit navy. Thanks for telling me that:up:

Even if I'm spotted, it's just a tanker so it does'nt really matter. I usually sneak up an then I ambush. I always order my deck gun crew to hit at water level with highly explosive or armor piercing shells. They're always sinking for sure with that method...

Yea but deck-gunning big ships isn't really ...historical if you will.
Also, the tanker might call in warships or RAF so don't be so confidend on it just being a tanker:up:
