This is not related to SH3 in any way.
What is the third ingredient to the famous UBoat Special Cocktail? Some kind of liquid out of a can. I'm guessing its condensed milk, but does anyone know for certain?
Thanks

Hi Phantom II,
you're right. It's condensed milk, trademark 'Glücksklee'. But there are only two ingredients: lemon juice + cond. milk
Greetings,

But doesnt he have the milk in a glass, then he squeezes the lemon juice, and then adds the condensed milk?

If you eat the jar after drinking the cocktail, then there're three ingredients...:rotfl:

I'm seasick just thinking about that.
By the look of the colour of the milk it looks like it's gone off and judging the looks of the others at the table they give out funny looks. :yep:

Nah, condensed milk comes with a yellowish color and has an extremely long shelf life, much longer than any U-boat patrol :)
It probably wouldn't be to bad actually; condensed milk is slightly sweet, lemon sour.......

And lemon juice will instantly curdle any kind of milk.

Yeah, he had to stir it pretty good before drinking it :)

I said this before, but I'll gladly repeat myself: in the book the 'author' (read fictional version of Bucheim) describes the different ways the officers consume their daily lemon ration. One pours sugar on the lemon, another pours the sugar in his mouth and then bites into the lemon and of course the 2WO make his 'cocktail'. What's fun in the movie is that if you look at the whole scene carefully you'll see the different officers quietly doing just what the book describes.

I believe it's evaporated milk..NOt condensed. must find out for realism :D
What is evaporated milk?
As its moniker explains, evaporated milk is milk which has had about sixty percent of the water removed via evaporation. It is then homogenized, rapidly chilled, fortified with vitamins and stabilizers, packaged, and finally sterilized. Standards require whole evaporated milk contain at least 7.9 percent milk fat and 25.5 percent milk solids. The high heat process gives it a bit of a caramelized flavor, and it is slightly darker in color than fresh milk. The evaporation process naturally concentrates the nutrients and the calories, so evaporated versions are more calorie-laden and nutritious than their fresh counterparts. You'll find skim, low-fat and whole milk varieties of evaporated milk. Low-fat and skim versions are also required to have added vitamin A, while all have added vitamins D and C.
What is sweetened condensed milk?
Sweetened condensed milk goes through less processing than evaporated milk.
zSB(3,3)Sixty percent of the water has also been removed from condensed milk, but it differs in that sugar has been added. Condensed milk contains 40 to 45 percent sugar, at least 8 percent fat and 28 percent milk solids. Condensed milk is pasteurized during the evaporation procedure, with the added sugar making any further sterilization unnecessary, since the sugar inhibits the growth of microorganisms. Governmental regulations require that vitamin A be added to condensed milk, but no other nutrients are required by law although they may be added. Condensed milk is very high in calories.
Unsweetened condensed milk is a redundant term. It is simply evaporated milk.
When mixed with an acidic ingredient, sweetened condensed milk thickens naturally without requiring heat. It is perfectly suited for puddings, pie fillings, bar cookies and refrigerated desserts. Condensed milk comes in regular, low-fat, fat-free, and even chocolate varieties.

In the pic the label seems to say Evaporated Milk. Could be my imagination though.

I remember once hearing an interview with an elderly German who was living in Berlin during the airlift just after the war, and remembered falling in love with an exotic far-away country called Canada because it was the source of the delicious Carnation evaporated milk which was being brought into Tempelhof.
Here in Newfoundland, evaporated milk used to be very popular, and still is among the older or more traditionally-minded crowd. When ordering in a cafe here, I'm usually careful to specify 'fresh milk', because sometimes I've ended up with Carnation in my tea or coffee.

If condensed milk is always sweetened and evaporated milk is never then yes, it is evaporated milk.

It's a table with some values i guess!
If you think it's a bar-code then sorry, no, at the time of production the stores did not have bar-codes, or laser counters!:hmm:

Looks like you two got stuck in the language barrier here.
In germany ordinary evaporated milk is called "Kondensmilch" (= kondensierte Milch; would translate to condensed milk...). Sweetened evaporated milk (the one Phantom II calls condensed milk) is a whole different product with no distinct name. I think it's also not very common here. Apparently it's quite easy to confuse the two different terms.
So yes, what he drinks is evaporated milk. But it's "Kondensmilch" nonetheless. So you were both right somehow.;)

Hi Myxale,
I think you're wrong, bar-code was released at the end of the seventies, just when the movie was produced - have a look [1st paragraph]:

But maybe I'm wrong - the pic above is not very sharp..

It most decidely looks like a bar code, seems like an awful lot of "nutritional information" for a can of condensed milk.
I could be wrong though I am quite often after all :smug:

So, I made myself a "U-Boat special cocktail" tonight just before dinner. Despite the fact that it looks rather disgusting, its actually quite nice, well, a lot nicer than pure lemon juice. Imagine a strawberry milkshake, but instead of strawberry you have lemon. Not that bad at all.
Heres a montage I made (Click the thumbnail)

Nah, much to obsure/lack of detail for a barcode. They're usually obnoxiously obvious. :)
