I must say that I've recently had the opprotunity to try this stuff more in the last few days and although I never thought I'ld say it... it grows on ya pretty quickly. Taste pretty good.

Yeh sushi :)

Seeing that the Japanese population is one of the most health populations in the world its probably good for ya to.

Raw fish is okay.

But if it's 'Hello Kitty' sushi I'll hurl.

Not my favourite food. It grows alot easier on people who, well, grew up eating this stuff. But it can be interesting when you're in the mood for something different.

I looove Sushi! :rock:I mostly eat maki, Iīm no big fan of the other variants. My favorites are those with cucumber, omelette, asparagus, shrimp, eel or tuna. Thanks to a rather large Japanese population we have some truly excellent Sushi bars here. Their sashimi is to die for!

Lets put that one to the test..shall we (so I say with an evil grin while soaking the sashimi in Arsenic).

Again, Sushi is not (raw) fish! Sushi is rice filled or topped with vegetables, fish/seafood or meat that is either raw or cooked. Sushi comes in various shapes and sizes. Raw fish is called sashimi.

That's the first time anybody has ever told me that. Personally, I'll stick with Sukiyaki, thanks.

Though I did have a member of the Japanese Olympic ski team give me some jerky once...squid jerky. It was pretty good.

That's wasabi (horseradish) and it will blow your socks off for sure. All the times I've had sushi it was on the side so you could add it if you want, noobs should really be careful with that stuff. Personally I love it, I enjoy weeping at mealtime.

For accuracy's sake, it is not what we know in the west as a white horseradish root. While it's nicknamed "Japanese horseradish" and both wasabi and horseradish are members of the cabbage family, they are different plants.

I barely dip my chopsticks into wasabi, just enough for a vague taste of its flavor. But I love a slice of good pickled ginger with my sushi. :yep:

I'll quote Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw in a commercial I saw that takes place in a sushi bar.

Bradshaw leans over to the guy serving the sushi with the plate in his hand and whispers:

"You forgot to cook this."

Raw meat though...:dead: well except beef maybe.

@ Avon Lady, thanks for the info didn't realise it was a different plant as Wasabi is dyed green. Does taste different from horseradish....both are powerful. :/\\x: Imagine the red triangle is your tongue.

Oops sorry Gizzmoe, thanks for the correction.

@ Steed, damn I love a good fish and chips and have not found any outside the UK or Canada (don't laugh we got some great fish and chips in the Maritimes and Newfoundland, real good fish and stuff). You need to make it properly though, good ingredients, fresh oil and good batter. Otherwise it's c@#p.

In all honesty, we've made our own sushi for a long time, I've only been to a real Sushi bar once. When I was about 12 or so....wasn't keeping kosher at the time, but I do now. (I thought seaweed was called Kombu? Or is it a kanji variation of the word Nori?). We got into asian food because my sister is an avid JapAnime fan.

Since our family started learning about our history and background we started keeping kosher etc. So we've made out own sushi since then (about 7 years ago or so). I haven't gotten around to making sashimi yet (not that I'd be able to get any fresh fish for that matter), but I can make some GREAT Chinese Chow Mein. Only problem is that you'll be wanting to drink from the fire hydrant after a bite or two.....I like spicy food.

Nori is a red alga, kombu a brown alga. Kombu has about 20 times more iodine than nori.

Kombu is dried sea kelp, and yep, it's chock-full of iodine.

I love sushi, and I had wanted to try chitlins when I first heard
about it.

Just yesterday I had a lunch of pork guts in chili and soy sauce. (No joke! Check out my location.)

The only sushi I haven't really enjoyed is the sea urchin. The rest is great. When no one's looking I eat it the way the Japanese originally did, with the fingers. For sashimi, rather than dip it is wasabi i lay a pinch of the stuff on the fish then dip it in the soy.

Delicious stuff. If I'm in a shopping centre then I always eat sushi rather than go for some greasy fast food within the food hall. It's not heavy and I love loads of wasabi even if it is about a hot as it gets and is life threatening to senior citizens. Sushi rocks.

A great book to get on sushi is "The Connoisseur's Guide to Sushi" by Dave Lowry. It covers everything from it's history to etiquette to the difference between real sushi and Americanized fake sushi. It's a fun read, too.
