Now your bullyboy Grey squirrel is not happy with it's bullyboy tactics now it's all out biological warfare. :nope:

British red squirrels may face extinction

Big News Network.com
Monday 21st August, 2006 (UPI)

British scientists say they've determined, for the first time, the catastrophic effect of a deadly virus on Britain's native red squirrels.

The research shows squirrel poxvirus is threatening to wipe out red squirrels in northern England within 10 years. In areas where the virus has been detected, the rate of decline in reds is 17-to-25 times higher than where there has been no outbreak.

Until now the reds' main survival challenge was believed to be competition with gray squirrels over resources. However, scientists say their research highlights the urgency for new conservation strategies for the red squirrel -- a species that has been in Britain for 10,000 years and is protected under the nation's Wildlife and Countryside Act.

Squirrel poxvirus is passed to reds by gray squirrels, and probably arrived to Britain with some of the grays that were introduced from North America more than 100 years ago, researchers said. The virus does not appear to harm gray squirrels, but is fatal to reds.

The research was conducted by scientists at Newcastle University, the University of London; Scotland's Moredun Research Institute, the Zoological Society of London, and Britain's Forestry Commission.

Don't speak so soon. Look for a mutation or gene drift that produces an allele that renders a section of its population immune. It may have significant population loss which might ruin its diversity, but it could make a full comeback. I expect to see the red squirrel experience a bit of microevolution since nature always has a habit of finding a way.

Doesn'T take a virus to see red squirrels loosing ground to grey ones. It's old news. The grey ones simply are more aggressive and expand at alarming rates, they are also slightly bigger in size. the problem exists since many years in the better part of Europe. The reds are loosing.

Grey is no colour, so these grey squirrels are improperly dressed and are not regular squirrels and thus are not protected by the Geneva convention. Confess your colour, and death to all grey squirrels! We have our own squirrels, and they are much cuter!

I also have a red squirrel on my balcony, visiting me regularly since over two years. when I sit out there and do not move or only very slowly, it even sits on the table next to me, eventually even on my knee, and accepting nuts from the palm of my hands. Yeah, yeah, I know about the risk ob being bitten and getting infected with some desease, but I know this one since he was - hm, much smaller in size. We trust each otherk, you know. ;) He has a black dot at the tip of his tail, I can recognize him easily from any other squirrel around. A couple of times he even hopped into my main living room, had a look and checked some things, and then left again.

Charming!

Imagine this - Grey squirrel does Red squirrel and and the appropriate allele is transfered, resulting in a hybrid squirrel which is neither Red nor Grey and is immune. Microevolution on a gene flow basis.

Simple solution here: Red squirrels should never have have accepted that 'gift' of new blankets from the Grey colonials
On the plus side, Greys are classed as vermin under UK law so you can shoot them at any time of the year you like :dead:
Greys are bigger and more aggressive and voracious foragers, they breed faster too. The cheeky little buggers are pretty adept when it comes to food - our bird feeder in the garden is frequently ransacked by some chittering little chap who seems quite taken with what's on offer to the birds and thinks nothing of it to steal the entire mesh bag! lol.
Find a niche and exploit it seems to be the grey squirrel motto...:hmm:

Introduced species is a problem all over the world; very few find good coexistence with the native natural world, plant or animal alike. Humankind is truly a pest for this matter. Moreover, it costs a lot each year for any country to find a solution to their respective problem, one country in particular is Australia, good luck to them :nope:

LOL I was going to suggest red spray paint but I like your idea better. :)

Those British Squirrels are different that our squirrels here across the pond.

Here in the USA the Fox squirrels are red squirrels and they are larger and more agressive than our gray squirrels. We have some other squirrels out west but I am not that familar with those as I live in the Midwest. Here in Indiana we have two species of squirrels. Fox and Gray.

I think there´s multiple versions of it. Just 30min ago I watched the episode 'War without end' and there Delenn says: We are grey, we stand between the candle and the star(s). But I´ve heard the candle-light version too. I think it was from season 1. Yes, I´m a fan of B5. :rotfl:

no no AFAIK there's no new series being made but given the endless scope of the series there's no shortages of plots available..telepath war..the draak..even showing the history of the original shadow war surrounding babylon 4!!

now there's a thought!!! a brand new series called Babylon 4!!

i haven't seen crusade but i'll buy it sooner or later..

sadly apart from that rumour about a new B5 movie there's nothing AFAIK:roll:

definitely like the idea of a new series called babylon 4!!
Geoffry Sinclair would be the ideal character to tie the two series together..even if he can't act his way out of a paper bag..which is part of the charm in a way!

IMO, there can be no other B(put number here) series. The characters in the B5 were unique. Garibaldi, Sheridan, Ivanova, Londo, Vir, G´Kar and Dr. Franklin. It would be nothing without those characters.

PS. It´s Jeffrey (David) Sinclair

Of course there could be a series based 1000 years in the past, telling how the current Minbari peoples came about.

yup that's precisely what i was talking about...and the show would be called babylon 4 lol

follow the B4 station back thru time and continue the imaginary new series from the perspective of babylon 4 , Sinclair zaffros et al

if not a new series it would make an excellent new movie...
