I updated my Zonealarm personal edition about a week ago and found my internet running really slow at times, only able to open one browser at a time (use to have 3 open without a problem) internet diconnecting every 2hrs or so, and when running the internet doing other activities like opening a folder would take at times a long time to open! Ive just deleted ZoneAlarm, installed Blackice defender and problem solved.
Slowdowns are no more. ZA sucks :nope:

Got Zonealarm professional and have no problems with it. I sit on the net for hours, nothing is slowed down.
I'd check if you don't have something else. This is the first I have heard of a problem with Zone Alarm.

Yes ive been a ZA user for yrs, so it took me a while to pin point ZA as the problem as thats the last program i would blame, but ive done spyware checks have nothing else running except antivirus, spyware checks never found anything wrong. Deleted ZA and problem was solved. Im thinking the update which is done automatically was a buggy update. But this Blackice defender seems to be okay.
Ive had some issues with ZoneAlarm PRO mainly connected with email scanner settings - because I have AV software doing this ZA is hanging on a request to send receive email - crashes OE and causes it to fail to shut down properly. Look for ZA related processes hogging all of your system resources. The ZA support forums have a sticky on this being an issue with the latest version, amongst a few other small bugs that are known in the current version but are due to be fixed in the next update.
Generally ZA-PRO has been solid as a rock for the last 3 years.

Blackice didn't used to be a firewall, but has that changed? It was simply a packet inspector. Run some tests on it to see if they have improved things.

Blackice to me is more for the pro tech out there. as its not as simple and laid back as ZA was. Blackice comes up with messages blocked IP xxxx do you wish to block? Well how am i suppose to know if this is a hacker from Gulag russia or my buddie down the road? lol so what do i do block it? gives me option to block for an hr, a day or forever. So i block it hoping this wasn't some website i frequently visit and now can't get in. Also has an amusing option to Hide my IP online. It is finding attacks more often than ZA did. It is not user friendly, but it works and doesn't slow down my pc.

I guess it could be useful if you don't have a good router. BlackIce defender was the first firewall I ever tried out (long term) - when it was brand new.
